Anker
He had set the
table for both of them, even though she could have ordered takeout. He felt
like cooking, as it was a human act that revitalized her. While arranging the
cutlery, he glanced at the clock and realized that she had exceeded the time
she had given Melanie.
He thought that if
she wanted to adopt that attitude, He would have to punish her. He would show
her that she had to obey her orders, as he was now her property. He was about
to head to her room when she saw Melanie coming down the stairs.
Damn, that dress
looked better on her than expected. The whole ensemble had been Trixie's idea. He
cursed her and thanked her at the same time.
He scanned her
with her eyes, taking in the curves of her body and, of course, that magnificent
neckline. He sensed her discomfort and relished it. This pushed her out of her
comfort zone, which was exactly what she had been aiming for.
"I'm glad you
made the right decision. You'll see that you won't regret it," he said,
pulling out the chair with a gesture, inviting her to sit.
There was doubt in
Melanie's eyes as she approached him. Rather than an arrogant angel, she acted
like a frightened mouse, and he didn't like that. He wanted to see more of that
defiant sparkle in her eyes.
"I'm here to
answer my questions. I don't need to sit because I'm not going to have dinner
with you."
"I highly
doubt that will happen if you don't bring your backside over here."
Although she
initially seemed reluctant to take a step forward, she eventually complied
cautiously. He waited for her to take a seat before pulling it closer to the
table gently.
One thing that
bothered her was Melanie's braided hair. He took it in her hands and quickly
unraveled it, letting the waves of her black mane fall onto her shoulders. He
lightly grazed it, but that was enough to make Melanie tense up instantly.
"That's more
like it," he said, unable to suppress a smile.
He took a seat in
front of Melanie and filled their glasses with white wine. He couldn't remember
the last time she had shared a meal with someone, and she found it curious to
realize that it had been a long time.
Melanie
What had happened
in that moment? She unconsciously took hold of a strand of hair that had been
released from the braid, but beyond feeling annoyed or disgusted, she
experienced a shiver when she barely touched her skin. She thought it might be
due to fear, although openly that being didn't frighten her.
"You'll finally
decide to talk, demon."
"I've already
told you; my name is Anker. 'Demon' is a very vulgar word and doesn't reflect
the reality of my abilities."
A first-rate
egotist, like all of his kind.
"That's not
your real name."
"Just like
Melanie isn't your real name," he raised an eyebrow and took a sip from
her glass, "Go ahead, try the food. I hope you like it."
"I don't need
to eat. I need you to tell me why you brought me to this place."
"Do you know
what a dinner entail? It's about talking, eating, and having a good time."
"Eating is a
human act of survival. It's absolutely unnecessary for me," I looked at
the plate in front of me. I had to admit that the aroma of spices from the
steak with sautéed potatoes was absolutely appetizing.
"Everything
you said was so boring to me," he speared a piece of roasted meat with her
fork. "Are all angels as pathetic as you?"
"Are all
demons as imbecilic as you?"
That superior
smile again. How much I wished to wipe it off with a single blow. I had to
think calmly and ask questions that could give me clues about what I really
needed to know.
"Not all
demons can maintain a corporeal form on Earth. Most of them are mere creepers
seeking to feed on any kind of energy," for a moment, I wanted to take a
sip of wine, but I would refrain from doing so. I couldn't trust that it wasn't
poisoned. "How is it that you can maintain this form?"
"Are you
referring to me staying damn attractive? Just like you," he replied,
shrugging her shoulders, and took a sip of wine.
"That's
impossible. I'm a celestial being. A demon cannot possess energy on its
own," I thought of that demonic aura surrounding the house. "The
farther you stray from the light..."
"The colder
the path," he concluded, shrugging. "Part of that is a lie and
doesn't apply to all rebels. If you know the history of the first fallen, I
shouldn't have to explain this to you."
"You're not a
celestial being. You're not human either. Where does your power come
from?"
"You're the
most irritating angel I've ever met in my existence," she left the cutlery
on the table and took a sip of wine. "And believe me, I've met quite a
few."
"How come
others haven't killed you?"
"Some hate me
and want to kill me, others desire me and want to have sex with me," he
took another bite of her food. "Sometimes they want both."
"They must be
sick," I couldn't help but grimace. I hadn't thought such a thing was
possible. An angel and a demon... It was unacceptable. Just thinking about it
made me feel repulsed.
"You're not
so different from humans. You succumb to the same pleasures."
"That doesn't
apply to me."
"Really?"
she raised an eyebrow with a malicious gleam in her eyes. "Don't you
desire me?"
"All I want
is to stab you," I stood up suddenly, and in an impulsive act, he did the
same, prepared to defend myself if necessary.
Before I was even
aware, he teleported close to me, ran a hand around my waist, pulling me
towards him, and planted a kiss on my lips. I wanted to push him away, but he
quickly pulled back.
I felt heat
rushing to my cheeks. I had never been surprised like that before.
