Catalina began by looking for work in the newspapers, making calls, but most jobs required education and specific skillsets, leaving her no choice but to find a job as a waitress at a restaurant, taking the night shift. This way, she could keep up with her studies even if it meant only sleeping four hours a night and asking the hospital to change her Saturday schedule. Thus, being a waitress became part of Catalina's routine.
Days went by, and Stephanie started dating a university guy who would visit their apartment. Although she was never outright excluded, it felt awkward for her sister. At the hospital, Catalina continued visiting Bruno while avoiding any encounters with Silvano to prevent further conversation. Catalina found a more affordable apartment for her and her sister and they moved in. Stephanie helped with finding some furniture. Another month passed, and it seemed things were getting a bit easier, but that wasn't the case. Catalina was working just to pay the rent, and lack of sleep was taking its toll. Chaos ensued; she had been cautioned twice at the hospital for dozing off, her grades had fallen, money was drying up with scholarships going directly to the school, and she had made a couple of blunders at work due to sleepwalking. Expenses were rising from school, apartment utilities, and food. Catalina felt she was going insane...
Not knowing what to do and unwilling to surrender so easily, Catalina was the only one able to work and ensure her and her little sister's livelihood. She told her sister she could take a job at a small store, bagging groceries for tips, but Catalina preferred to keep her home, not wanting to add to her worries.
At the hospital, Catalina was entering data into a computer when she started to doze off. Silvano was watching her from the waiting room when a medical emergency occurred, with Catalina still asleep. Before any doctors could notice, he woke her up to save her from another reprimand. She thanked him for protecting her from an additional scolding and quickly went about her duties. After a few hours, she returned to her desk and Silvano came by with two cups of coffee.
Silvano: Would you like some coffee? It will keep you awake.
Catalina: Thank you, and thanks for earlier, but I prefer to keep my distance from you.
Silvano: I understand, but please let me help you. I imagine you're having troubles.
Catalina stood to leave but fainted, and Silvano caught her. Sandra saw what happened and called for help. The doctor directed them where to take her, and Silvano carried her to a stretcher. After being asked to leave, the doctor stayed to attend to her. About two hours later, the doctor emerged from the room; they hurried to him.
Silvano: How is the nurse?
Doctor: She's a bit weak. It seems she hasn't eaten properly these days, nor has she rested. Her nerves are very strained as well; perhaps she's facing problems and her body is beginning to show signs.
Sandra: Can we see her?
Doctor: Yes, of course. She has just woken up.
Without waiting another moment, Sandra and Silvano entered Catalina's room. Seeing them, Catalina felt embarrassed, especially in front of Sandra; she felt unable to even make eye contact...
