Episode 6

It was the fifth time that afternoon that the phone had rung. Seated before the massive desk in my office, I gazed out the window at the abandoned tower that had become my future moon's gloomy residence.

"The phone has rung five times now. You need to deal with it," Safira's shrill voice snapped me out of the wicked thoughts swirling in my mind. I blinked slowly as I looked at her and sighed.

For three years, Cassandra Baumer had been trapped in that tower. I still remembered how she struggled to escape in the early days, her screams providing me with immense thrills. And all this time, the mate of her cousin had been calling, seeking news.

I should have foreseen that he would be a thorn in my side since the sixteenth birthday party. I should have guessed that he wouldn't stop looking out for Cassandra, even from afar. On the other hand, I should be grateful for the territorial incursions by the southern tribe – they kept my parents occupied so that the calls were never discovered.

Wars have their advantages. Wolf tribes have never truly been allies, requiring a stronger bond to unite them – perhaps what my father sought with the eastern tribe, where Cassandra Baumer was the little princess. However, my only concern was that Lucian was the cousin of the western tribe's alpha, and if he revealed to him that communication with Cassandra was being denied, that would indeed cause me issues.

"Answer it already!" Safira snapped, shooting me a deadly look. But, like the good submissive she was, she bowed her head and slowly walked out of the office.

"Hello?" I attempted to make my voice as cold as possible.

"I assume you know who this is and exactly what I want. I wish to speak with Cassandra." And so, we begin again. On the other end, Lucian's commanding voice clenched my jaw.

"You're well aware that Cassandra can't come to the phone..." The sound of something breaking on the other side interrupted me.

"And what's your excuse today? With the borders sealed due to the southern tribe's advancement these past years, I've tolerated and endured your excuses. But not this time; unless I speak to Cassandra right now, tomorrow, I'll set out with a delegation to your location." A growl rose halfway up my throat before I forced myself to suppress it.

My excuse box was empty. For three years, I'd been concocting lies so that no one from the Baumer family could contact her, and similarly, I'd spun stories to my mother about her refusing to speak with us because of my actions at her birthday. They never suspected that Cassandra was securely imprisoned in that tower, serving as a toy upon which I took out personal and sexual frustrations.

"You have two hours to get Cassie on the phone, or consider this an act of war." I rolled my eyes at his hollow threat, hearing only the violence with which the phone slammed down.

What did that girl have that everyone liked her so much? Thankfully, her cousin Daphne had recently had a child; her focus would be on raising the pup, leaving Cassandra forgotten.

"Safira, get me in touch with the Costas brothers," I declared as an idea lit up in my mind. The blonde peeked her head back into the room, giving me an inquisitive look.

"You know the Costas brothers are infamous for kidnapping cubs and never returning them to their parents... What are you planning?" Her question died as the front door opened and my mother entered, her expression troubled, followed by my father growling in disgust.

Subtly, Safira exited via the office's side door while I, the dutiful son, rose to greet them.

"Is everything all right?" I asked, leaning against the door frame, and watched as my mother looked at me with a mix of fury and folded her arms. At that moment, I caught only a glimpse of my father launching himself at me.

"May I know why the moon of the western tribe called to claim we're not letting Cassandra contact her family?" My mother inquired, immediately after I felt my back slam into the wall, the pain making me groan.

"You know what's funny? We were just discussing this with the alpha and the moon, particularly since you told us – or rather, assured us – she was with her family..." My mother's voice was no longer calm and collected. My father was silent but firm, squeezing my throat as I felt his claws slowly pierce my skin.

Gasping for air, the front door burst open violently, and two bloodied wolves entered. One clutched his belly where a deep gash was, and the other struggled to convey his message before succumbing.

"We are being a-attacked..." The wolf said before collapsing to his knees and onto the floor, allowing his blood to cover all the marble of the house.
