Episode 11

DIMITRI

Throughout dinner, I subtly observed Angela; indeed, she is beautiful and my son is smitten with her. However, I was displeased with the way Pamela looked at Angela. She is merely another employee, and now she assists me with Anton, but she has no right to question my decisions, let alone cast distasteful glances at my guests.

After dropping Angela off at her home, I returned and went straight to see Anton, where Pamela was already present.

"Mr. Dimitri, I watched over Anton’s sleep until your return," Pamela said with a smile I did not care for.

"That’s fine. I intended to speak with you," I started.

"What do you require, sir?" Pamela asked.

"I need you not to question my orders again. That’s what I pay you for. Also, when I have guests, do not look at them with contempt," I replied.

"Sir, it's just that the lady is only looking to use little Anton to get close to you," Pamela suggested, a notion I rejected, as Angela clearly showed little interest in me.

"That's not the case, and even if it were, I am old enough not to let any woman manipulate me. So, keep your malicious comments to yourself and do your job quietly. Don't overstep your boundaries or you might find yourself out of a job," I clarified.

"My apologies, sir. I just wanted to help, but it won’t happen again," Pamela said.

"That is my expectation, because there is nothing I despise more than people meddling in my life. Now go get some rest; I will look after Anton as I always do," I directed.

"Yes, sir. Excuse me," Pamela left, and I picked up my son’s monitor. He continued to sleep peacefully as if nothing had happened.

"Even if there were an explosion, you wouldn't be bothered, champ," I whispered, covering him again with his blanket. Then, taking the monitor, I retreated to my room.

In my bedroom, I placed the monitor beside the bed, stripped down to my boxers, and climbed into bed. Tired, but not much of a sleeper, I woke up early the next morning, followed through with my exercise routine, took a shower, and prepared for the office. Afterwards, I went to see Anton, who had awoken but remained quiet, sitting in his crib with his teddy bear beside him.

"Hey, champ, ready for another day at work?" I asked him, and he looked seriously at me before smiling.

"I'll take that as a yes," I said as I lifted him from the crib, dressed him, and packed what he needed for the day before heading down to breakfast with him.

"Good morning, sir," Pamela greeted us.

"Good morning," I replied, situating Anton in his chair.

While Pamela fed Anton, I ate breakfast, deep in thought because my father hadn’t written, and by this hour, he should be nearly landing. But, I'd wait till the end of the day, considering his flight might have been delayed.

After breakfast, I washed my hands and face in the bathroom. Returning to Anton, I cleaned him up as well.

"Sir, I could take care of the baby at home while you work," Pamela offered.

"I take care of my son myself. I've told you that you may help us with him on special occasions like last night, but I take care of Anton," I responded.

"As you command, sir. I just wanted to be helpful,"sPamela remarked.

"I’ll let you know when I need help," I replied sternly.

I gathered my son and his items and we set off. Securing him in his car seat, I drove to the company. Upon arrival, I spotted the Walton family chauffeur, presumably having brought Angela. I retrieved Anton and his belongings and headed for the elevator. At the office level, I saw the president's secretaries scurrying about.

"What's going on?" I asked one of them.

"Miss Walton requested some documents for early this morning, and although we left them on her desk last night, now they’re missing. She’s convened everyone and asked to call security," the secretary explained.

"Are they important documents?" I inquired further.

"Yes, sir, they are critical for the upcoming negotiation," she answered.

"Where is Miss Walton?" I asked.

"In the president's office, making calls to retrieve the information," the secretary informed.

"I’m going to see her," I stated, walking with Anton straight to the president’s office. I knocked but, receiving no answer, entered and found Angela distressed at the desk.

"Mama," Anton said joyfully upon seeing her.

"Hello, prince. Come here," Angela forced a smile and hugged my son, who nestled into her arms.

"Are you okay? One of the secretaries told me what happened," I probed.

"We have a backup of the information, but I’m troubled by its disappearance from my desk. Supposedly, only my parents and I have access to this office. No one can enter without our approval, not even the secretaries. How were those documents taken?" Angela expressed her concern.

"Calm down. I know a very capable group. They can inform us of every person who entered here, given a couple of days," I proposed.

"Can they be trusted?" Angela asked, wary.

"Yes, absolutely. Otherwise, I wouldn't be offering their services," I assured her.

"Good. That’s the best option I have right now since security hasn’t found anything. I accept your suggestion to call them. When can they come?" Angela inquired.

"After everyone has left the company, so we don’t tip off anyone," I suggested.

"Alright," Angela agreed.

"We should go. You're running late, and we'll be heading out," I tried to pick up Anton, but as usual, when he's with Angela, he clung to her.

"I’ll take care of him. See you later," Angela said.

"Alright, champ. Behave yourself and don’t cause more trouble," I laughed, exiting the office but not before leaving his belongings behind.

Back in my office, I called the group I had mentioned to Angela. They assured me there would be no issue; they would come in the evening once we had confirmed the office was clear. That's what sets this group apart; they operate from the shadows.
