Devil’S Playtime

Devil’S Playtime

Keowgen

I woke up in my bed and stretched . Watching all the orphans playing in the kitchen made me feel energised . I got ready for the day and wore my clothes. The sun shone brightly through the window, as if today was the last day it would shine. No clouds were covering the sun and a white fog hovered in the sky. It was time for breakfast, but I knew that today was going to be a bad day.

After breakfast kids went to play outside , leaving me all alone in the kitchen. I finished up my breakfast slowly, taking a bite of each pancake one at a time.

“Olive, finish your food fast. Those kids are playing outside. You’re always left out.” MdmAlina said as she washed the dishes, her hands full or soap, moving every millisecond.

“I prefer to enjoy my food slowly but here you are, forcing me to eat faster and play with the kids,” I mumbled, glaring in her direction.

“Pardon?” Mdm Alina spoke, not looking up from the dirty plates and bowls.

“Nothing,” I shrugged. I stood up, looking longingly at my pancakes. “I’m off to play.” I sighed and headed out of the kitchen.

I went to the field, watching the orphans play soccer. “I’m an orphan” I thought. The words repeated in my mind one after another like a broken radio. It was heartbreak to remember how my mom and dad died in the plane crash, and my memories of that day flooded in. It couldn’t be controlled, and I was suffering from every second of the replayed memory. I think about it everyday, every night and every time I see someone With parents. The memory could not be erased. I stared into space, sitting on the fresh, green grass, leaning against a tree.

“Hey,” I heard a voice say. I just ignored it. Nobody ever talks to me, exception for Mdm Alina, of course.

“Can you hear me?” The voice said again. I snapped out of my daydream. It was Jadden, the only boy who wasn’t disgusted by me.

“Oh. Hi,” I responded coldly. “Wanna be friends?” He offered and gave me his hand. I took it and stood up. “Why do you want to be my friend? I’m not that special anyway..” I muttered, not realising how close he was to me. “Because you’re always alone…Mdm Alina told me that. She wants me to be your friend. But it’s not by force. I had a choice. And plus, you’re pretty cool so that’s a bonus,” He smiled. It was the first time anyone had ever said that to me.

“Okay,” I agreed, trying to hide my gleeful smile.

The rest of the days were the best! We played swings, slide and football. Who knew I had a hidden talent in football? But one day, the fun ended. Somebody came to adopt one of the children and bring them home, a family…warmth and love. Jadden looked at me nervously. “I Hope we don’t get separated,” he frowned. The man who came to adopt us didn’t look very nice. His skin looked like a shadow, the rest of his body were the same- except for his eyes. His eyes were bloody red. Everyone was scared of him. He walked around the orphanage, looking for a suitable child. Everyone looked nervous, especially Jadden. That was when the man stopped, at our corner…Jadden and me exchanged glances. He was going to choose one of us. And it was terrible to lose your only friend. The man looked back and forth at me and Jadden. He took my hand and pulled me up. “No,” Jadden whispered, his eyes full of tears. His blue eyes shone, even in the dark, but seeing him cry was the last thing I ever wanted to do. “I’ll miss you,” I whispered back. Jadden shook his head, in disbelief that I was leaving- leaving his life, this orphanage and going to a better place- without him. His tears rolled down his cheeks, though the atmosphere was blue, his tears shone crystal, and the man, heartless, pulled me out of the orphanage without signing the papers.

The next morning, my eyes were swollen due to crying, but there was one thing I wondered as much as why he( the man) chose me: why was I waking up in a hospital bed? Like a sick person? I opened my eyes slowly and looked around. There was a syringe., surgical gloves and a test tube-green in colour. I sat down and walked towards the mirror. My skin was green, full of bumps and black dots. My eyes were red, and I was starting to figure out: he wasn’t here to take care of me- but turn me into a monster. My eyes popped out like crazy, and the veins in my eyes could be seen clearly from about 10 kilometres away. “No,” I muttered. I turned bigger, and I. Was. A. Monster.

Note: in this chapte, I showed the history of the monster, Keowgen, a monster in Devils Playtime: her powers is to make people forget and go to the wrong direction- a place you’re never supposed to be. In the next 8 chapters, I will show the history of more monsters, and in the 10th chapter, the story begins.
