The twins took their precious time riding slowly, enjoying the purr of their engines and the wind hitting their face through the opening on their helmets. It was already dark out and the city of Seoul was now being illuminated by the lights on the lamps, buildings, self driving cars, bikes, and taxi hover ships flying above the ground. It was a peaceful ride home like any other night they drove through the busy traffic of people trying to get back to their homes. Hae grimanced in confusion as her brother suddenly took a detour away from the road and swerved left towards a convenient store at a lonely almost dark side of the road.
"Sky, what are you doing?" Hae called to her brother as she dismounted her bike and followed him towards the entrance of the store.
"We're out of snacks and if we expect to hangout with those bottomless pits we call friends we should restock." He explained stopping her at the door with a small smile." I'll be out in a minute after I have ordered, you watch the bikes please, okay?."
Hae let out an exasperated huff and placing her hands on her perfect hips." And we can't order online at home because?"
"Because we promised to not always depend on technology all the time. What's a little errand for our daily use? Come on, plus I wanted a detour." Haneul gently shoved his sisters shoulder with a playful smile playing his lips. That smile didn't last for long as it dropped after searching endlessly for his wallet in his pockets.
"Forgot something?" Hae teased with a sly smile, staring at her brothers pockets with a knowing look. He flushed and bit his lips in embarrassment looking down at his shoes." I know you don't want us depending too much on technology but you really should reconsider getting a pay app on your phone. It's handy when you forget your wallet and credit card which you really seem to do every single time. You watch the bikes, I'll get the snacks, I've got my phone."
Haneul nodded to his sister with a disagreeing frown on the notion of downloading a money payment app. He awaited his sisters return outside, leaning against his bikes with his arms tucked warmly into his jacket pocket and lively blue eyes surveying his dim surroundings. Letting out a tired huff, he let his eyes wander around the direction of the two dumpster which had been completely filled to the brim with more trash emitting an unpleasantly pungent smell falling and littering it's surroundings. His nose crinkled in disgust, it looked like the trash hadn't been picked up by the garbage truck for weeks.
Letting his eyes roam at every nook and cranny of the unpleasant sight before him something caught his sharp sight. A fluffy bundle of white. In surprise, he watched the rabbit nibble on a piece of rotten carrot that it probably had scavenged from the mountain of garbage. It suddenly darted into the dark alley the moment it noticed Hanuel's gaze leaving the animal loving boy to give chase after it.
The rate of the possibility of finding a stray animal in the city of Seoul was a zero to none, mostly because of the Steele family. As a child, he'd loved animals to the core and often filled the house with every unclaimed ones he laid his eyes upon. After his mother's irritation of having dozens of animals fill their home and with much more still coming in blew up, she had Hanuel put out a notice to the whole city for a certain amount of compensation for every stray animal found, saved and sent to the Animal Care Centre which filled up quite quickly. He convinced his mother into funding his little project and donating millions to the animal shelter. She agreed not knowing how to disagree with her baby boy, after all money wasn't an issues for the wealthiest family in the city of North Korea. Now at the present time, there is an enormously built animal shelter funded by Hanuel himself after graduating highschool called Animal Ark.
The alley was dark and quite smelly but Haneul could hardly make notice. His determination was bent on following the fluff ball as it hopped down and turned a corner. Hanuel followed behind using the flash light of his phone to see his path. The corner led to a dead end but there the fluff ball was, at a filthy corner giving it's carrot to another female rabbit lying on the ground and cuddling five more more tiny bunnies sucking at it's ******. It was a little rabbit family.
His heart melted instantly. The male must have been foraging for food to give to the hungry mother in order to feed the bunnies. They all weren't looking that good either. There were no meat on their bones, looking really thin and dangerously malnourished. The babies wouldn't survive for much longer on the amount of milk produced by how little the food the mother ate if Haneul never found them.
Threading carefully and not wanting to scare them off with his presence, he moved closer for a better scrutiny of their physical state. He crouched a few inches away from them studying them. The female looked too weak and sullen, her ribs were on display and they were a couple of unhealed cuts and bruises on the bodies of the rabbits. She didn't react when he reached out to stroke her nose nor did the male. He only sniffed at Hanuel's hand hesitantly, nuzzling it for a second before moving beside his mate timidly. Hanuel smiled. They were quite tame, and that was a good thing. He hoped that they were because there would be no way to help them if they wanted to keep him away at arms lengthy due to fear. Or if they were very sensitive and cautious making them quite violent.
"Look at you all, you're suffering." He murmured with a frown, giving the rabbits a final once-over, worry and ruth writ-large on his face, churning deep inside his stomach." Don't worry, you don't have to suffer like this anymore, I'm going to take you home and take care of you....... I promise, just stay-"
A sudden loud shuffle escaped from the other end of the alley shocking both him and the rabbit family, following by a low groan. It sounded weak and shaky making Hanuel a bit jittery. He jumped to his feet and strode over to the other side thinking that it could probably be another wounded animal in need of medical attention. A dog, maybe?
But it wasn't a dog, nor was it any other animal he had hoped to find amongst the pile of torn up and used cartons. What he found was non other than a human....... a woman to be exact.
He wondered to himself, why the hell didn't I run?
