"Her heart held a secret: a love so deep, it hurt even when she was asked to
help him love someone else."
Venice is crying. Pamela and Grace are comforting her.
Venice is crying hard, tears streaming down her face. Pamela and Grace sit close, gently holding her, trying to soothe her.
“Why are you crying, Venice? Can you tell us what happened?” Pamela asks softly.
Venice tries to speak, but her sobs choke her words. She can barely get a sound out.
Grace looks worried. “Please, Venice, just tell us. What happened?”
Venice keeps crying, unable to talk.
She cries for almost an hour. Finally, Pamela hands her a glass of water and says gently,
“Are you okay now? Can you tell us what happened?”
Venice wipes her tears, takes a shaky breath, and speaks quietly.
“Bunny likes a girl,” she says, voice breaking.
Pamela and Grace exchange surprised looks.
“He asked me to help set them up. Her name is Danny. She’s my classmate
Venice’s voice trembles as she continues,
“I’ve liked Bunny for years… since sixth grade. I don’t even know how it happened — we used to be enemies, then friends somehow. And I ended up loving him. It’s one-sided. I thought he liked me.”
She closes her eyes, struggling to hold back more tears.
“It all started last summer, when we were in tenth grade. Bunny called me out of nowhere during vacation. We hadn’t talked in years because we fought a lot. But suddenly, he called
Pamela and Grace listen quietly.
“He asked if I could get his report card from school because he was out of town. We go to the same school, but we never talk there — we act like strangers. Still, I got it for him.”
“After that, we started talking every day. Like best friends. We talked about dreams, careers, goals. I loved it. I loved talking to him.”
Venice manages a small smile through her tears.
“When school started again, we went to different colleges in different cities. We didn’t see each other but kept calling. I thought maybe he really liked me.”
Her smile fades. “Then we fought again. Just before he left for a family trip, we bumped into each other — twice. The second time, we fell.”
Venice’s voice grows louder as she imitates Bunny.
“‘Are you blind? Don’t you see where you’re going? This is the second time! Are you doing this on purpose to annoy me?’”
She laughs bitterly. “I told him I was busy doing chores and didn’t have time for his annoying crap.”
“Later, his mom asked me to get her purse from Bunny’s room. So I went in pretending I was blind — hand over my eyes, fumbling for the purse
Bunny noticed and asked what I was doing. I said I wasn’t talking to him, just there for the purse.
Venice laughs again, tears still falling.
“I kept doing this all day — acting blind whenever Bunny came near. At dinner, I reached for dishes on his side, still pretending not to see.”
Her mom asked, “Venice, what are you doing?”
I said, “Nothing, Mom. Just annoying everyone.”
Pamela and Grace exchanged knowing looks. “You and Bunny must’ve fought again,” Pamela said.
Everyone kept eating like it was normal.
Later, they watched a movie. Bunny sat near the popcorn. I went to get some, still acting blind.
Bunny got angry, grabbed my hand, and dragged me outside. Everyone saw but didn’t stop. They said, “Let them handle it. They’re not kids anymore.”
In the yard, Bunny yelled, “What are you doing? Are you out of your mind? I’ve seen you acting blind all day!”
I yelled back, “You said I was blind! So now I am! You said I was annoying, so I’m doing it on purpose!”
I still had my hand over my eyes.
Bunny calmed down and said softly, “Okay, I’m sorry. We’re both at fault. I shouldn’t have yelled or accused you. Please take your hand down. Are you really that angry you don’t want to see me? I said sorry, Venie. Please.”
The way he said “Venie”… it melted me. He gently took my hand and pulled it away.
I looked at him, and we smiled.
We went back inside, laughing and giggling. For the first time, we weren’t fighting. My mom said, “Finally, you’ve grown up.”
That night, I went to my room and hugged my pillow. I kept thinking about his soft voice, the way he said my name, how he held my hand.
I was so happy, blushing, feeling like I was on cloud nine.
And now he likes someone else.
And I’m the one he asked to help.
