While Archie and Kaivan may have settled into their new home, married couple Aditya and Adinda had made the decision to stay at Aditya's parents' house, as his mother Risa would not permit him to leave.
Aditya might have finished his college education, but was he employed? The answer: no. His days, all the way to evenings like these, were spent with his phone in hand, tilted just so.
Engrossed in gaming.
And while one might expect his wife to exhibit more industrious behavior, sadly, she did not. Adinda, still a college student herself, also nurtured a gaming habit.
"Darling, are you hungry? Let's have dinner," Adinda coaxed sweetly.
Aditya nodded. "And afterwards, you'll fulfill my request?" he hinted with a suggestive wiggle of his eyebrows.
"Of course, don't worry. I'll give you all you want, just for my husband," replied Adinda confidently.
With a peck on her lips, Aditya got out of bed. He plugged in his phone to charge, readying it for another gaming session later.
Following suit, Adinda rose and joined her husband. The couple descended the stairs to the dining table.
This was the usual dinner time, thus when they reached the dining area, they found Aditya's parents, Anto and Risa, already there.
"Good evening, Mom, Dad," greeted Aditya, pulling out a chair to sit.
Adinda seated herself next to her husband, reaching for a plate to begin her meal.
"Dinda, you should serve your husband first, not help yourself," chided Risa, admonishing her young daughter-in-law.
"Yes, Mom," Adinda replied, standing up to fix a plate for Aditya first. She spooned rice and picked out some side dishes before handing the plate to her husband.
Aditya accepted it without a word of thanks, which didn't seem to bother Adinda.
She then served herself and started eating with her husband and in-laws.
Midway through dinner, Anto cleared his throat, looking from son to daughter-in-law.
"Aditya, your father wants you to start considering work instead of continuously playing games. Can you do that?" Anto inquired with a demanding tone.
"Dad, I'm still savoring my post-graduation leisure. Allow me a few months of respite from productive activities," replied Aditya, conveying his lack of enthusiasm.
"But son, your father wants you to emulate Kaivan's achievements," Anto persisted, explaining his reasoning for wanting his son to work sooner.
Aditya furrowed his brow. "What do you mean?" he asked.
"Kaivan has defied his own brother to help Archiena. Your mother wants our business to compete with his," said Risa with fervor.
Aditya laughed at the notion, leaving his parents puzzled. Adinda, even more clueless, remained silent, intrigued.
"Mom, Dad. We all know how vast Uncle Kaivan's enterprise is. Are you truly planning on us competing?" Aditya asked.
"Don't be ridiculous," he added with a shake of his head.
Risa slammed her hand on the table. "That's exactly it, Dit. Your mother wants you to be like Kaivan, we must surpass his company," she stated again.
"Please, Dit. It hurts me to see Kaivan siding with Archie instead," Risa pleaded.
Aditya shrugged. "Fine, I'll try, but I can't promise I'll be able to outdo Uncle Kaivan," he retorted.
"I'm not interested in competing with him; I'm more intrigued by the notion of rivaling Archie," Aditya said, then looked at his wife.
"Isn't that right?" he asked.
Adinda responded with a sly smile and a nod.
"Whatever, as long as you make Kaivan regret his decision," Risa added, clearly exasperated.
"But does Aunt Fia approve of Uncle Kaivan and Archiena's marriage, Mom?" Anto inquired.
Risa shook her head. "I hardly think so; you know how selective that old lady is," she answered.
"Good, then. If granny doesn't approve of Archie, they're bound to split up," chimed in Adinda.
Her dislike for Archiena had her wishing ill on her own sister.
"Yes, and that's why I've invited them to meet with your grandparents tomorrow," Risa said with a nod.
"Grandma and Grandpa are coming over? Are you certain?" Aditya asked, surprised.
"Yes, they'll be here tomorrow. We'll see Aunt Fia reject Archie," Risa confirmed.
"If only Kaivan were your blood brother, you might have had some share in his wealth," sighed Anto with a heavy breath.
Risa kept silent, irked by the reminder that Kaivan was in fact the son of Aunt Fia from an earlier marriage. After Risa and Kaivan's parents passed away, Aunt Fia and Risa's dad had married, benefiting from the wealth.
"Let's leave it. We too have our wealth, perhaps not as much as Kaivan's, but our task now is to grow our business to rival his," Risa declared, fists clenched.
"I'll start at the office the day after tomorrow," Aditya said, gulping down a glass of water.
"Why not tomorrow?" asked Anto.
"I need my rest, at least let me sleep before I start at the office and take on Uncle Kaivan," Aditya replied.
"And you, Dinda, tell your parents not to stop financing your studies," Risa instructed her daughter-in-law.
"But why, Mom? I'm married now. Shouldn't Aditya be responsible for me?" Adinda asked, puzzled.
"Your tuition is expensive, especially when Aditya isn't working and can't provide for you," Risa explained bluntly.
"We, his own parents, have yet to see any support from him, so just do as I say," Risa added before leaving the table.
Anto followed, leaving Adinda and Aditya behind.
"Dit, my parents will definitely refuse," said Adinda with a worried look.
"Try, look at me. Even I'm still relying on my parents," Aditya replied before getting up and leaving his wife alone.
