Once upon a time, on the planet of Kandriti, in a faraway land, there was an empire known as Kundrastra, ruled by a kind king and queen. Six months ago, the queen gave birth to a very son named Kusum. The citizens of the empire were very very over the news. The monarch couple used to live very happily and ruled over their empire with love and kindness. Their empire was very prosperous. The people living there were very happy. The whole empire was surrounded by a very dense forest.

[14th February of the imperial year 889]

In a town on the outskirts of the empire...

Workers shouting… Soldiers patrolling… Escorts checking if everything is all right

”Hey, load the…Come on! Work faster!... We will depart in a few hours!... Hey, where did… Beep…beep… Arf! Arf! Arf! Where did this dog come from!... You! What is loaded… Where is the…”

After a while, the owner of the merchandise, Srivastav, strolled around the place to check how everything was going on.

The escort leader, Kunal, and the vice-president of the merchandise, Vishal, who was also his son, saw Srivastav coming this way.

Srivastav – “How is the preparation going?”

The escort leader, Kunal, replies, "Yes sir, reporting the situation, everything else is fine except block B had some issues."

Srivastav – "I see…So, son…how is it? Are you excited for your first time going out of the empire?"

Vishal – "Yes, Father. It will be a new experience for me. I am looking forward to this."

[A few hours later]

Srivastav – “All right, is everything done for the journey?”

Everyone (in sync) – “YES SIR!”

Srivastav – “All right, is everyone ready for the journey?”

Everyone (in sync) – “YES SIR!”

Srivastav – “All right, Let’s depart!”

Everyone (in sync) – “YES SIR!” *Everyone shouting in joy*

Finally, everyone departed for the neighbouring empire. They had to cross the forest which surrounded the empire. It had several problems. It had bandits, and many wild animals like cheetahs, tigers, and lions living in it. Thus, a person must always be cautious so as not to get caught or killed or even looted.

Inside the carriage, the merchant and his son were sitting.  He looked worried. His son asked, “Father, is something wrong? Why do you look so worried? Are you alright?” Srivastav replied, “No, son. Nothing is wrong. It is just that the villages on the border regularly reported their cattle or animals missing due to carnivorous animals from the forest. But recently, this has increased quite a lot. I don’t know why though.”

Vishal – “Hmm…it could be the work of some tiger or lion.”

Srivastav – “That’s what we thought. A few days ago, a mail came to me. It mentioned a petrified villager seeing a demon feasting on a tiger after killing it. He said that when it was still dark in the morning he had got up to bring water from the river steam which flowed from the forest, he saw some black creatures bigger than humans. At first, the officials thought it was probably an old man hallucinating while being drunk. However, this case came out again, when two patrol guards were guarding in that area. And suddenly, a demon launched upon one of them. The demon injured the second guard but he managed to get away from the demon. The second guard reported the situation to his superiors, and a group of trained soldiers was dispatched. When they reached there, it is said that there was nothing left except for a piece of his cloth, blood, a finger and a gold ring which has been identified as the personal belonging of the soldier. As you know, demons can digest everything except for gold metal. But, the demon could be found nowhere to be found. Later, it was found out that there had been some such cases of missing patrol guards for over a month. Even though these cases are very few, it still counts. Not much is known to the public. This is a highly specified document I got using connections. Since we are not going by that route, we are safe.”

But the merchant did not know that this case was even more major than what it looked like.  Even darker truths were hidden under the desk of the officials.
