Chapter 5

Lucia’s POV

As I got in my department. Three girls walked towards me and one of them said, “Oh how people have unethical means to complete their internship period within a month, when everyone else at the least took 3-6 months.” On this the other girl replied saying, “Obviously they would be climbing the beds of the higher authority.” The third girl then agreeing to the both said, “The audacity to come out of the CEO’s car. God knows what she did?” While they were talking, they kept looking at me, trying to let the whole world including me know that they were talking about me. I tried to ignore them as it was of no use talking to them. But then, one of them said, “Probably goes in the family. When they don’t know where they belong, they start doing everything possible to meet their desires.” I couldn’t help but march towards them fuming, but then I kept my cool and said, “Well, well getting an internship completed in a month which usually takes 3-6 months can only be because the person is capable, isn’t it? Talking about climbing on beds I can rely on my capabilities to earn what I desire. Moreover, if the higher authorities sleep with me, wouldn’t it be because I’m more beautiful than the plastic faces filled in here?” I didn’t let them speak and left there. I felt really good after letting it all out. Trying to be goody two shoes is really difficult. I can always vent on them when they make things hard for me from now on. I then went to the patients that I had to tend to. I had majored in Cardiology. I had learnt a lot being with the ones with a weak heart. They live their lives to the fullest and always do what they want to as they never know when their heart would stop beating. I took this very seriously. We humans are so busy trying to make others happy be it our parents or friends that we forget our own happiness. To talk about me I don’t have anyone to make happy but I do have Carlo for who I would dedicate my whole life to. I don’t care about my happiness; all I want to see is him being happy and never feeling the loss of parents. I have a little girl who I’m tending to. She’s just 8, yet she’s so matured. I gave her a check-up and the results came out that she needed an immediate transplant because apparently, she was suffering from cardiomyopathy. It is when the muscles of the heart make it difficult to pump blood. We needed a donor as soon as possible. We contacted many places to find a donor. It had been an entire day. We had to do the surgery within five days or she would lose her life. I went for a checkup of her vitals and requirements. She was smiling looking at me and asked, “Will I go to meet God soon?” I looked at her parents who were keeping their broken hearts together, then I looked at her and said, “Who told you that? You just need to go through a small surgery and everything will be alright.” As we were talking, a nurse walked in and informed that a person who suffered from kidney failure and lost his life was willing to donate his organs and his family has agreed to donate the heart to the little girl. Everyone in the room got so happy at the news. We quickly proceeded to the operation theatre and arranged for the surgery. As I was handling this case, I was the designated surgeon leading the surgery with the other doctors backing and helping me. It was quite an easy surgery but needed quite a lot of patience. After about six hours with a bit of complication the surgery was successful. I was really happy with the success but more than that I was happy to see the girl healthy and seeing the family of three together and happy. My shift ended after that and I went home. Sitting in the small attic I looked around.

I had a pay rise because I had turned into a permanent employee. I decided to move out of the attic room and get a decent room. I spent the rest of the day scrolling through internet looking for rooms. Not finding a suitable room I slept. The next day I decided to get help from Maria. We both after finishing our shifts sat in the cafeteria and were scrolling through our phones. I was concentrated and determined on getting a better room when I snapped out of because I heard someone call out my name. I turned my head to see Mr. De Luca standing beside me and Maria looking at us through her phone. I in a sudden response stood up and Maria burst out in laughter. Upon this both me and Mr. De Luca looked at her. I was pretty embarrassed. I tried to ignore her and asked Mr. De Luca how I could help him. He just said, “I was looking at you for quite sometime being focused on something so just wanted to ask what it was about.” I then said that we were trying to look for a room for me and Carlo. He then sat beside me and scrolled through my phone. We were so close to each other that I could examine each and every part of his face bit by bit. Now that I looked at him up closely, he was really handsome. The most attractive part of him were his eyes which were green and had a tinge of blue. I kept looking at him as he kept looking at the phone quite immersed. After a while he looked at me straight in the eyes and said, “I don’t find any room here which is likeable. I know a friend who’s renting out a room for quite a good price. If you want to, I will talk to him.” I then thought about it and said, “I would like to check the room and talk to the owner about the price.” He then said, “We can head to the place right now if you want to. Anyways he’s quite free and wants to rent out the room as soon as possible.” I too wanted to get out of the attic as soon as possible and quickly replied saying that I would too, love to go there immediately. I then looked at Maria and asked her if she wanted to join us. She then denied saying that she had to hurry home. While saying so she had those eyes which were looking at me and then at Mr. De Luca. I understood what she was trying to say with her eyes. I then looked at her with the eyes which were saying that there is nothing between us. Then me and Mr. De Luca walked towards the car that was already waiting. We headed to a very luxurious locality. The first thought that came to my mind was that the room would be totally out of my budget. He then held the door open for me when we reached the place. It was an apartment building which was really pretty. I then thought that maybe I could just have a look at the room. Mr. De Luca introduced me to the owner. We looked around the apartment. It was quite big than the small attic. It had two different bedrooms which were enough for a bed and a little space around it. It had a small kitchen. I loved the apartment. Then we talked about the price surprisingly it was totally into my budget I didn’t even hesitate and said yes to buying this beautiful room. Moreover, it was just an hour away from the hospital and there was a bus-stop which took one right to the school of Carlo.

I rented the house immediately with the money I had. He told us that we could move in tomorrow. Mr. De Luca congratulated me and said that he wanted to help us with the shifting tomorrow. I couldn’t say no and also it was better to have him help us than hiring some men to do the exact same work. The next day I received a call from him and he said that he was waiting downstairs. I hurriedly woke up Carlo who was sleeping as it was a Sunday. We both got ready quickly and headed downstairs. I went to him and said, “Good morning Mr. De Luca.” He then said, “Don’t call me so formally. Aren’t we friends now? Try to call me Lorenzo. It’ll make me feel at ease too.” I replied saying, “Hmm, okay Lorenzo.” He then gave a smile and said, “See, this feels so better. Let’s go and get done with the shifting.” After a long tiring day, we finished shifting. I decided to hold a housewarming party and invited Maria and Lorenzo for the same.
