Chapter 5: Confrontation
Alex had been avoiding the topic for a while, hoping that Jason would come to terms with his feelings on his own. But as the days turned into weeks, Alex couldn't shake off the growing sense of frustration and confusion. He needed to talk to Jason, to understand where he stood and what he wanted.
One day, as they were hanging out in their dorm room, Alex took a deep breath and broached the subject.
"Jason, can we talk about what happened between us?"
Jason looked up from his textbook, a nervous expression on his face. "I don't know if that's a good idea, Alex."
"Why not?" Alex pressed, feeling a sense of frustration building up inside of him. "We can't just pretend like it never happened. We need to talk about it."
Jason hesitated for a moment, then finally spoke. "I don't know what you want me to say, Alex. I'm not gay. I was just drunk and it was a mistake."
Alex felt his heart sink at Jason's words. He had been hoping for a different response, one that would acknowledge the growing tension between them and the undeniable chemistry they shared.
"But what about the way we've been acting around each other?" Alex asked, trying to keep his tone calm and steady. "Don't you feel something too?"
Jason shrugged, looking away. "I don't know, Alex. I just don't think this is a good idea."
Alex felt a wave of frustration and hurt wash over him. He couldn't understand why Jason was being so resistant to the idea of exploring their attraction to each other.
"I don't know what to do," Alex said, his voice trembling slightly. "I care about you, Jason. But if you're not willing to be honest with yourself, how can we make this work?"
Jason looked at him, his expression softening slightly. "I do care about you, Alex. But I just don't think I'm ready for this. I need more time to figure things out."
Alex nodded, feeling a sense of resignation settle over him. He knew that he couldn't force Jason to accept his feelings, no matter how much he wanted to. But he also knew that he couldn't deny his own feelings forever.
"I understand, Jason," he said, his voice softening. "Just know that I'm here for you, no matter what."
Jason nodded, looking grateful and relieved. "Thanks, Alex. That means a lot to me."
Alex smiled at Jason, feeling a sense of relief wash over him. He was glad that they had finally talked about their feelings, even if Jason wasn't ready to fully acknowledge his own yet.
"Of course, man," Alex said, clapping Jason on the shoulder. "You're my best friend. I'll always be here for you, no matter what."
Jason smiled back, his eyes shining with gratitude. "I know, Alex. And I appreciate that more than you know."
They sat in silence for a few moments, both lost in their own thoughts. Alex couldn't help but wonder what the future held for them, and whether Jason would ever be ready to accept his own feelings.
But for now, he was content to have this moment of understanding and connection with his best friend. He knew that they still had a lot of work to do, both individually and as a pair, but he was willing to take things one step at a time.
"Hey, want to grab some dinner?" Alex asked, trying to lighten the mood. "I'm starving."
Jason chuckled, the tension between them dissipating slightly. "Yeah, that sounds good. Let's go."
They got up from their dorm room and headed out into the cool evening air, feeling a sense of camaraderie and understanding between them. Alex knew that their journey would be a difficult one, but he also knew that they had each other, and that was all that mattered.
