As Dorothy curses her brother within her home, she contemplates how to ensure Valery marries that young man. Her niece must not become an impediment to her own daughter's prospects.
Dorothy is well aware of Valery's charm and that princes may take an interest in her; hence, she resolves to do whatever it takes to make that marriage happen.
Meanwhile, Valery and Thomas engage in conversation, and he suggests a sparring match.
Thomas: "How about we test our strength?"
Valery: "Ha ha, are you sure?"
Thomas: "Of course, I've been trained by General Javier Lorens."
Valery: "They say my uncle is skilled in combat. Alright then, if you're not afraid of losing."
During their mock duel, laughter punctuates their display of prowess; Thomas is an excellent swordsman, but Valery, with war experience, outshines them all.
Post-duel, Thomas bows deeply, "I am at your service, captain," as Valery, smiling, returns the gesture. The young pair revel in their jocular encounter.
Thomas: "What's war like?"
Valery sighs: "The worst of human endeavors. The battlefield reveals dreadful things, survival of the fittest. Once you start killing, it's hard to stop. I've lost friends out there."
Thomas sees a distant look in Valery's eyes when she recollects her battles; he can't resist and tenderly strokes her cheek. Her skin is soft to the touch. Drawing nearer, he kisses her. Valery is stunned at first; this is her first kiss. Thomas rests his forehead against hers, their gazes locked.
Thomas: "Forgive me if I was disrespectful. Kissing you is something I've dreamt of for years. You made a promise, and you must keep it."
Valery flushes red; her strength fades under his intense gaze, his eyes, and his voice that causes her to tremble. She has never felt like this about anyone – her heart beats with every word from Thomas.
Valery smiles: "Alright, I'll honor my promise and you will be my husband. But, we should get to know each other better first."
Thomas lifts her in his arms and twirls with his beautiful Valery: "Yes!!! I am the luckiest man!!!"
Valery, amused by Thomas's antics: "Alright, lucky man, set me down. It's getting late, and I should head back. I’ll see you here tomorrow."
Thomas: "Certainly, my fair lady."
They mount their horses and ride towards their homes. Crossing paths with his brother, German, Thomas can scarcely contain his joy.
Thomas: "She said yes! She'll marry me; she'll be my wife."
German gives his younger brother a look: "Who are you talking about?"
Thomas: "My lovely Valery. Her lips are so sweet and soft..." His thoughts drift back to Valery's kiss, and his brother looks on...
German: "Little brother, you're utterly smitten, ha ha. But how do you know she loves you for who you are, and not for your title?"
Thomas: "Because she doesn't know I'm a prince. My sweet girl thinks I'm just a common young man from town."
German: "I can't believe you've never told her!"
Thomas: "No, but I'll tell her in a week at Leonardo's wedding."
As they talk, Renata, daughter of Count Javier Lorens, overhears them. She's always been infatuated with Thomas, and the thought of losing him overwhelms her. She hastens away; she must do something. She must persuade her father to speak to the king about arranging a marriage between her and Thomas.
