MARCELE
When I got back from my walk with Alicia, Miguel wasn't home. I went up to my room and thought about why he married me.
What could Miguel know about my life that I didn't? Then, I received a message from him telling me to get ready, that we had an appointment. This is all I am in this house, a companion for the powerful boss.
I waited for him to arrive, ready to confront him. I have to know. I started to get ready and heard a noise. I looked out the window and saw his car pulling in.
I waited near the door. Miguel never makes a sound when he walks; he's like a ghost. I abruptly opened the door, and he was already near his bedroom door.
MARCELE - Why did you marry me?
MIGUEL - Good evening.
MARCELE - I need an answer, Miguel. Please, tell me why you married me?
MIGUEL - We can talk another time, if you'd like. We're running late now.
He spoke and went into his room. Ugh, I hate this handsome, delicious man!
I went back to my room, finished getting ready, and waited for him in the living room. I scrolled through my phone, talking to Alicia, who was already waiting for me at her house, where dinner would be.
Mrs. Beatriz's house is near Miguel's. We drove in silence, as he always chooses to play mute when he's around me.
We arrived at the house, and each of us went our separate ways. I stayed with Alicia, always keeping an eye on Miguel. Since he refuses to talk to me, I'll try to figure something out on my own. I watched him slip out a side door. I excused myself and followed him. He was on the phone.
📳 MIGUEL - I need you to travel to Puebla today.
📳 .......
📳 MIGUEL - Set up a base, take as many men as you need. Turn that city upside down.
📳 .........
📳 MIGUEL - I gave a deadline, and you have to meet it, okay? I'll be waiting for updates.
📴 CALL ENDED ❌
He turned around quickly. I didn't have time to run. He stopped and stared at me with those beautiful blue eyes.
MIGUEL - Are you spying on me?
I couldn't answer. He took short steps towards me, and I stood there like a statue, mesmerized by him. His shirt was tight, highlighting his chest and evident muscles, the top two buttons undone.
MIGUEL - Are you deaf or playing mute?
MARCELE - Neither.
I turned my back and hurried away. I never know what to say when I'm near him. When I try, the words escape me, or he escapes from me.
I heard him talking about Puebla. Could Andressa have some agreement with Miguel? I can't reason; nothing makes sense in my head.
I went back to Alicia, who was talking to a strange girl who looked me up and down and made a face like Francisca.
ALICIA - Durzely, this is Marcele, my sister-in-law.
DURZELY - So, you're the one Miguel married. You know, I know your husband intimately.
MARCELE - Good for you, he screwed you but didn't claim you.
I turned my back and walked away. I heard Alicia arguing with her. I walked through the garden and found a dimly lit fountain and decided to sit there for a moment to try to gather my thoughts. I still ask myself why I suffer so much.
For eight years, my life has been a real mess. I even wonder why I've never ended it all. A few minutes passed, and I began to hear shouts calling my name. It was Miguel, Alicia, and Mrs. Beatriz.
I stood up, wiped my tears, and answered.
BEATRIZ - Oh my dear, it's so good that you're here. We were all looking for you.
MIGUEL - Where did you go? Why did you leave without telling anyone?
MARCELE - I didn't leave. The garden is part of the house. I'm tired of everyone bossing me around, tired of being a prisoner, being treated like a toy, of everyone hiding things. I'm tired, tired! I want a divorce, Miguel.
MIGUEL - Let's talk.
MARCELE - There's nothing to talk about, no agreement to be made. I want a divorce, and that's it! I didn't ask to marry you, and you didn't ask to marry me. You just took me from Bordini and took me straight to a wedding I didn't plan, that I didn't want. You didn't give me a choice to say yes or no.
MIGUEL - Let's talk, Marcele. Please, come with me.
MARCELE - I already said I don't want to talk. It's decided, we're getting a divorce.
MIGUEL - Nothing is decided. In the mafia, there is no divorce. Besides, in the documents you signed, you can never leave me. If you try to run away, any one of my allies is authorized to kill you anywhere in the world, understand? Now, we're going to talk. Come with me.
My eyes began to burn, my vision blurred, and tears started to stream down my face. I didn't look at Alicia or Mrs. Beatriz.
I don't know what to think. How can we not get a divorce? I'm stuck in this tragic marriage for the rest of my life? What a joke I am to fate.
It turned me into a miserable person who can't even plan her future because my future has already been mapped out by the mob boss and my idiotic sister.
I curse the day Andressa was born, I curse the day my father met her mother.
We walked to a huge door, which Miguel opened for me. It was an office with luxurious furniture. On the desk, there was a huge portrait with a family photo. As soon as I saw it, I remembered that my father's office also had a photo of us. I started to sob uncontrollably, clutching that portrait, remembering how happy I once was. I don't think I'll ever be happy again.
