Elizabeth didn’t say anything she just looked at the ground.
“He’s just a friend,” Elizabeth said in a whisper.
“A friend HA! Why would any decent man want to be friends with a woman who doesn’t even know what man she made a child with. Don’t forget what we discussed previously. “ the landlady said walking back to her apartment.
Elizabeth remembered when she was looking for a place to live. It was very difficult because many places wouldn’t take single women with children.
However, the landlady allowed her and Yoshio to live a peaceful life together in the apartment. But there was a conditions; Elizabeth could not bring any men home with her ever, if wanted to live in the complex. Yoshio wasn’t aloud to play with any of the children in the apartment building. It was as though he didn’t even exist. They were both a couple of ghost who came and went. Elizabeth didn’t any of her neighbors, the only friend Yoshio was Ming from school and she could never come over to play.
She tried not to think about it much as she laid Yoshio in bed. She stroked his cheek and a few warm tears rolled down her face.
Elizabeth shielded Yoshio from as much as she could, she wanted him to be happy and too feel love.
‘Next week I’ll have to speak with Mr. Yamada about bring us home,’ Elizabeth thought to herself as she took of her clothes to have a shower. The warm water would help to relax her.
She would have to put a clear boundary line between her Mr. Yamada if she wanted to keep her apartment. She thought back to conversation from the days previous.
“Elizabeth I need to speak with you,” the landlady was already waiting for her at the bottom of the stairs. She had her hands on her hips and a sour face.
“Yoshio wait for me outside okay,” Elizabeth said before she reached the bottom of the stairs where the landlady was waiting. Yoshio didn’t say anything he just walked passed the landlady with his head down and waited outside.
“Yes, landlady,” Elizabeth said bowing her head.
“You maybe disrespected your parents house by getting pregnant but you will not disrespect my place with you foul behavior. If you continue to think you can disregard my words. You will regret crossing do you understand me,” the landlady asked. Elizabeth only nodded her head in reply. She was use to being scolded and treat like trash. This was nothing new to her.
“You send that man back from he come or they’ll be trouble for you and your bastard. You can leave now. Let this not be a repeated conversation.” The landlady said looking at Elizabeth harshly.
“Yes, landlady” Elizabeth said waking past the landlady.
She let the water from the shower take the memory away. Why was everything so hard for her. She slid down the wall of the shower and sat on the floor holding her knees to her chest. The water washed over her head and poured down to her back.
Mr. Yamada was a very kind person and now she had to be unkind to him.
‘Oh no’ Elizabeth began to cry. She had asked Mr. Yamada to come to her house for a special dinner. She couldn’t possibly ask the landlady for a favor now. Her tears mixed with warm water as she thought about how disappointed he was going to be. He seemed so pleased when she extended the invitation now she would have to cancel. She held her face in her hands.
‘I’ll think about it tomorrow,’ she thought getting up and out of the shower.
The following morning it was raining hard.
“Yoshio did you find the umbrella!” She yelled from her room into the living room. She had taken everything out of the closet but she couldn’t find the umbrella.
“No!” Yoshio yelled from the living room his legs sticking out from under the sofa.
“We have to get going, here out this on” She got a big trash bag and made a whole in the middle and draped it over Yoshio.
“Hahaha mommy I look silly but what about my head,” Yoshio laughed and pointed at his head.
“Here put this on,” Elizabeth found a smaller bag and tied it on his head.
“What about you mommy?” Yoshio asked.
“Mommy will be fine. Let’s go,” they left they apartment and ran to the train station. Yoshio was dry with the exception of his shoes and socks.
They reached the construction site and it was still pouring down with rain.
“Stand here and wait for Mr. Yamada Okay. Don’t sit down or you’ll have a wet bottom,” she said kissing his forehead.
“Yoshio,” a while later Mr. Yamada arrived with a huge umbrella and picked Yoshio up and took him into the building.
“Assistant Li, I need dry clothes for him and shoes.” Mr. Yamada said and Assistant Li looked at the tags in Yoshio’s shoes and clothes to get his size.
“I’ll get right on that sir,” she said and left the office.
Mr. Yamada went into his private room and came back with a white button up shirt.
“Go in there take off all the wet clothes and put this on until Assistant Li gets back,” he said looking down at Yoshio.
“Okay, can you help me with my belt. It’s the tricky one,” Yoshio said lifting his shirt.
Mr. Yamada undid the belt and Yoshio went to change.
“Everything okay in there Yoshio?” Mr. Yamada asked.
“Yes! I’m done,” Yoshio said coming out from the room with the wet clothes and shoes in hand. The white shirt was miles to big for him.
“Sit here on the sofa and don’t come down until Assistant Li gets back. The floor is cold and I don’t want you to get sick,” Mr. Yamada said taking the wet clothes from Yoshio.
“Mr. Yamada?” Yoshio said curling up in a corner of the sofa.
“What’s wrong Yoshio?” He asked and walked over to him.
“I’m cold,” Yoshio said in a soft sweet voice. Mr. Yamada took of his suit coat and draped it over Yoshio.
“Is that better?” He asked rubbing Yoshio’s shoulder. Yoshio nodded his head. Mr. Yamada took out his cellphone and took a picture of Yoshio curled up in his coat.
\~no umbrella this morning\~ he sent the message with the picture.
\~no, is he okay. I’m sorry. I seem to be a burden to you\~ Elizabeth wrote back. He hated when she said that she and Yoshio were a burden. He didn’t see it that way.
\~never a burden Assistant Li is getting him some dry clothes\~ Mr. Yamada wrote back.
\~thank you I’ll have to pay you back\~ Elizabeth wrote back.
\~just make it a really special dinner\~ he wrote back. When Elizabeth read his message she had a pain in her stomach how was she going to tell him that the dinner was not going to happen.
\~about that we need to talk\~Elizabeth wrote back. Mr. Yamada felt his heart dropped that was not a good sign. He was looking forward to that dinner with anticipation. He looked down at Yoshio he was asleep.
\~okay\~ was the only thing he could write back. Elizabeth was feeling really bad.
The rain continued to pour down on the city. Over at the construction site Elizabeth was getting drenched in rain.
“I’m going to grab a document,” Mr. Yamada said to himself. He looked over at the sofa and Yoshio was still sleeping curled up in his coat. Assistant Li was not back yet.
“I’ll be right back,” Mr. Yamada said ruffling Yoshio’s hair. He just moaned and turned away from him.
“Can’t believe he hasn’t answered any of my calls or text,” Sora stomped through the mostly empty office building. Most of the employees were off and the security was light. She got angry at the elevator when the code for the VIP elevator wasn’t working. She was upset because she had to take the employee elevator.
“Good morning Madam,” a man wearing a suit and carrying a briefcase greeted her as she entered.
“What’s good about it? It’s raining and my fiancé is a jerk!” Sora yelled as the elevator door opened on a floor a few floors below Yoshio’s floor.
The man didn’t answer he just grabbed his briefcase close to his chest and go out the elevator.
“At least she’s not here,” Sora said out loud to herself when she arrived and didn’t see Assistant Li sitting at her desk.
She had been trying to reach Yoshio for days now. His mother had gone to the country to visit her father and would not be available. So it was up to her to deal with Yoshio and he was being difficult.
She walked over to his office door and pushed the door open. She looked around; she stormed over to his private room and he wasn’t in there. She walked passed the sofa and looked down. There was something in the sofa under Yoshio’s coat. She reach down...
