Igor, as always, couldn't stay still. He couldn't resist making a provocation; he found it amusing to provoke the serious man and didn't miss the opportunity.
"Well then, with your qualified partner, I am now yours and must listen obediently," he said, deliberately flirting. His slight smile always remained. Enrico briefly glanced at him, a subtle smile wanting to appear on his face. Igor was great at pretending to be obedient.
About half an hour later, the car stopped in front of an elite, internationally recognized kindergarten. There were luxury cars everywhere. Once they arrived at the entrance, Enrico remained quiet in his seat, but the housekeeper and Igor had to get out for inspection. The entry inspection was strict, and they both had to register before being allowed in.
After entering, Igor followed her through the facility, and she led him to their destination. They stopped at a certain point, and she said a few words.
"It seems the class hasn't finished yet. We'll have to wait a bit."
The two stood in front of a large glass window, inside which a group of five to six-year-old children played together in the indoor playground.
"Who are we waiting for?" Igor made a strange expression and continued, "Don't tell me Enrico has a child?"
"No, it's his nephew," she explained, seeing that he may have misunderstood.
"Look, it's the one holding the book."
Igor's eyebrows relaxed a bit, and he followed her gaze to where the housekeeper was pointing. At the back of the playroom, a curly-haired little boy sat on a small wooden chair. He held an English storybook, which was even bigger than his face, and read it with great seriousness.
This mature appearance seemed completely out of context in the playful environment with other children. Igor found it quite interesting and couldn't help but ask.
"Where are his parents? Why didn't they come to pick him up?"
The housekeeper sighed heavily before answering Igor's question.
"Actually, they are dead."
Igor frowned slightly upon hearing the response. Odette observed her blurry reflection in the glass window and reminisced about the past as she explained it to him.
"Four years ago, there was a car accident. Four people died, and one got injured. The then-patriarch of the family was in the car with his wife, who was Enrico's older sister, and her husband. They didn't survive."
Igor connected the dots, thinking about the fifth person who was in the car.
"So, Enrico was the injured one. That means his legs..."
"Yes, his life was saved, but his leg injury was quite severe," she said, shaking her head bitterly.
"Was it an accident or deliberate?" an unsettling thought came to his mind.
"It wasn't an accident, it was manipulated," she didn't hide that information from him and waited a few seconds before continuing.
"Enrico's grandfather died of a heart attack. The children and grandchildren began fighting for the family's assets and properties. The grandfather was the patriarch, and he lived until he was ninety-seven. But he wasn't willing to pass on the power until his death."
Igor listened to it all and disapproved by snorting.
"To persist in power to the point of fighting for life and death? The position of patriarch in this family is almost like a fight for the throne of a kingdom."
"No, Mr. Moretti and his wife were never ones to fight for power. They knew that when the patriarch died, they would have to openly or secretly fight for power. So, they planned to travel abroad to avoid being in the spotlight. However, on their way to the airport under the command of the main house..."
She paused, as recalling those events was painful for her. After all, she had lived with that family for many years.
Enrico's grandfather led the family for many years; he married twice and had three sons and a daughter. Enrico's father was the son from the second marriage, born when he was older and therefore somewhat favored. Enrico's father and his three siblings were separated by age and not particularly close, except by blood relation.
Enrico believed that if he took the initiative to withdraw from the dispute, they would live in peace. However, in the end, they were unable to fight against the twisted minds of others. Power often blinded people and could obliterate all conscience and affection.
"Mr. Enrico was lucky to recover his life after the accident," Odette said sadly. "But he couldn't ignore the hatred from his family, who plotted against him and caused the death of his parents and sister. I saw him sink deeper and deeper, and his behavior became increasingly relentless."
Igor listened to it all, exchanging glances between Odette's sorrowful expression as she told the story and the child in the room. He thought that only in his family could there be dramas like that, where they tried to bring down their own blood. However, he realized that the story of the Moretti family was far more terrible than that of the Rossi family.
