The divorce

It was an ordinary day at the store. People coming and going. In the sock aile, every pair was different, no 4 socks were the same. Every pair was taking an oath of love. So no matter what happens, they will stick together.

There was however something they didn’t predict. That day, a man came and bought 2 pairs of socks. As soon as he got home, he cut off the little thin plastic string and placed the two couples in the drawer, a place where the light was almost a fairytale.

The next day, the man took couple number one and went off with his new day. Little did he know that in each shoe, a heartbroken sock sat wailing at the thought of being away from it’s love.

At the end of the day, the socks were worn out and sweaty. So, along with other clothes without partner, they were washed clean of everything. After they were hanged out to dry in the warm welcoming spring sun.

The following day, the other couple was took out to work the same tiring work as they cried at the thought of their spouse doing the same difficult work. The evening finally arrived and they were so relieved to see each other they were still tangled at the end of the washing time.

The first couple was already resting in their soft spot in the drawer when the lights went out for the night.

This is how the couples spent a few weeks together working once every 2 days or ig they were lucky once every 3/4 days. That however meant that the other couple had extra working hours.

As each day passed, the couples started fighting more and more over the littlest things which, because of exhaustion, became intolerable.

One day, a sock from the first couple disappeared without a trace. The man didn’t even realize it until he wanted to put them on one day. But he didn’t throw the other sock away in hope he manages to find it’s pair.

The other sock spent it’s days crying like a newborn until one shocking day came and another sock from the second couple divorced him and moved away, somewhere, in a place, where the man couldn’t trace it.

The two remaining socks cried together and consoled each other becoming close friends.

The man, who now lost all hope of finding their pairs and seeing they weren’t worth throwing away decided he will use them at the same time even though they looked nothing alike.

Every 2 days they went to work together and in their time off, they got to know each other more and more, gradually falling for each other.

Even if the work was fatiguing, they remained best friends and later on, lovers.

One day though, the sock from the first couple started wearing out and beginning to have holes in it which little by little grew. Worried of what the man might do, he asked the other sock: “Sew me, so he won’t realize. Sew me, so we can stay together.”

And that’s how on their days off, they fixed every hole that appeared. But the man, realizing they are wearing out, he threw them out.

“At least we’re together.” said one sock with tears in its eyes.

And they stayed together until time transformed them into rags.
