It was Lucas for sure. I ran to the window and opened it, hoping for him to be standing there. But the street was empty. I was disappointed, if he was here to deliver the letter anyways he should’ve at least said hi.
I clutched the letter tightly in my palm and laid down on bed waiting for the sun to rise. I kept tossing for the whole night. This was probably the longest night of my life.
Next morning I informed mom, took the bus and went to the place mentioned. Public vehicles do not ride the mountains so I had to walk to the cliff. I walked from the side of the road with heavy feet as a few vehicles passed by. I was practically climbing my way up. My nose was blocked and numb due to the cold.
I kept walking, dressed like a panda, thinking where to punch him the moment we meet and giggling at my own thoughts until my eyes noticed the kid standing at the edge. The little girl took a step forward, a few more steps and she’d fall. I ran across the empty road as fast as I could and pulled her away.
“It's dangerous kid,” I turned her around.
She was white as snow with dark eyes and jet black hair. Her clothes were thin but she had no sign of feeling cold. Her expressionless face gave me chills.
“Where are your parents?” She said nothing but the edges of her lips curled forming a creepy smile. She slowly raised her hand pointing behind me.
The moment I turned around a car hit me so hard that I was pushed off the cliff. I had no time to react or even scream. I forgot everything, the girl, the car. The only thoughts that I had on my mind were about Lucas and mom. Several memories flashed through my brain, good, bad, happy, sad. I had to meet Lucas, he was waiting for me, I didn’t even bid a proper goodbye to my mom, and I had so many other things to do.
Next moment, my body hit the ground filled with rocks. I could feel my muscles tearing and bones breaking. A big rock hit my head or you can say my head hit a big rock and I felt sharp pain as if my skull cracked open. It was not the scalp this time but the skull. Warm red liquid was oozing out of my injuries, its faint rusty scent mixing with the wind.
My head was spinning, clouding my vision. I barely had my eyes open but couldn’t see a thing other than some blurry images of trees, sky and the mountain walls.
I tried to scream for help but my lips didn’t cooperate. I tried to get up but it was of no use. Even my bleary eyes started betraying me.
I suddenly heard a ‘crack’, as if someone stepped on a twig. I mustered up all the strength left in my body and opened my eyes. There was somebody, somebody approaching, a human at least.
A glimpse of hope aroused in my heart, I wanted to ask for help but couldn’t. I was still screaming in my mind ‘please save me’. My eyes gave up, tears rolled out of them.
I felt a soft touch. They caressed my cheek slowly wiping the tears that rolled down my temple. I thought I’ll be saved soon but the person’s words left me in a dilemma.
“If only you were never born, you wouldn’t have died so miserably”. It was a woman’s voice.
Her words were like a puzzle. What does that mean? Why did she say that? Several questions flooded my mind but then, I sensed the woman leaving.
‘Maybe she doesn’t want to go through the trouble of saving someone’, I tried to reason with her words. ‘Mom…. Lucas…. Please miss me’, a tear rolled down my closed eyes tracing the path of the previous one, which the woman wiped. I laid down thinking I’ll die soon but still hoping for aid. My senses started fading away slowly and I drifted to sleep or death you may say.
