It's Sunday, and I'm off to the mansion to see my mom. It's been over a week since I last saw her. Well, it's not really a visit, just a quick kiss, I don't want to risk being seen and thrown out, knowing Mrs. Jenna and Miss Mia. If not for my mom, I wouldn't even think of stepping near the entrance. I've been working at Mariano's parents' law firm for a week now. They're such lovely people; they've always treated me well and have never shown me disdain despite being so prestigious in their respective fields. It's a modest job, but it's a job, and at the firm, it'll help me learn more. I'm so excited.
The guys at the entrance let me through. Lost in thought, I head towards the mansion, but then I feel someone approaching me. I quicken my pace, but before I can step into the little house, he corners me.
"You're quite elusive, woman," says Benjamin, Mrs. Jenna's nephew.
"What do you want? Did they send you to throw me out?" I lift my chin defiantly, resolved not to cower before any of them.
"No, whatever gave you that idea?" He traps me with an arm between the wall and my body, and with his other hand, he tries to touch me, but I don't allow it. "You know," he says, "since my dear cousin has grown bored of you, why don't we have some fun?"
"What? Has this man lost his mind without telling anyone? Who told him I wanted to play his games?"
"I don't know what you're talking about, young man," I reply, my voice shaking with nerves that reflect Mrs. Jenna's murky gaze.
"Of course, you do." He leans in close, inhaling my scent, which makes me tremble with fear and revulsion.
"My cousin told me how delightful you are. He even suggested I try, assuring me you wouldn't deny me some pleasure," he says, his tongue grazing my neck with a revolting combination of fear and disgust.
"Let go of me, Benjamin, or I will scream that you're trying to assault me," I threaten.
He just laughs. "Go ahead and see who believes you. Don't be so foolish, girl. Take advantage of what I'm offering; you won't find a better option than me," he sneers.
If I thought Cameron was arrogant and egotistical, I was mistaken; this man is far worse. Disgusting.
"It doesn't matter whether they believe me, just as long as you stay away from me," I reply, wanting him far away but feeling my legs frozen in place.
"Help!" I scream, more to frighten him than anything, as I know it won't be heard in the mansion. He just laughs and moves his body closer to mine. "Let go, you bastard!" I shove him as I feel his weight shift away, and there's Cameron. How did he get here?
"Get your filthy hands off her. What's wrong with you?" Cameron yells, pushing him.
"Are you okay?" Cameron asks, his gaze making my heart storm inside me.
"Yes," I barely manage before Benjamin, taking advantage of his turned back, lunges at him. "Watch out!" I warn, seeing his intention.
Cameron turns and strikes Benjamin in the face.
"I don't want you near my woman," he declares, leaving me frozen in place. Woman. What on earth is he saying?
Benjamin rises, wiping blood from his mouth. "You're going to pay for this, Cameron, and you, girl, you will be mine."
"Shut up, idiot!" Cameron warns him to back off before he strikes again.
Amidst all this commotion, my mother hasn't showed up... where could she be?
"Thank you for coming. I was terrified," I confess as he enfolds me in his arms. God, he's shirtless, and I had not even noticed, just those shorts.
Being in his arms feels so right. God, how I love this man. I know he's not cruel, just influenced by his upbringing, Jenna's son.
"My chocolate!" he murmurs, cradling my face in his hands, and all I want is for him to kiss me with a ravenous hunger. "Don't stop loving me," he almost pleads. His lips invade mine before I can answer, his kiss rough yet delicious.
"Cameron Dubois!" Elle's shout pulls us from our bubble.
We turn to see her, Benjamin smirking, Mrs. Jenna, my mother, and Matilde. Our secret's out.
"What is the meaning of this?" Elle demands, tears in her eyes.
"What you saw, Elle. You're not a child; you know what a kiss is," Cameron says brazenly.
"You're despicable, Cameron," I confirm within my thoughts, as Elle certainly thinks so.
"Mrs. Greta, gather your things and get out with your whore of a daughter, at once!" Mrs. Jenna coldly commands.
My mother reaches me, gives me a kiss on the forehead, then disappears inside the house.
"I'm sorry," Cameron says.
"I think it's best we stay away from your family for a while."
"Now you're scared?" he teases.
"Obviously not, but I've had enough of all your contempt."
"Apologies!" he offers, sounding genuinely offended.
"Especially from you, who've done nothing but toy with me."
"I never played with you. I made my intentions clear from the start, I always thought you wanted the same," he insists, a hint of sincerity in his eyes.
"Cameron, I endured much from you, the way you dated Elle, your engagement to her, while I sat on the sidelines waiting to be called into play. The pain that brings is unimaginable."
"I'm truly sorry, Jackie," he says softly, pulling my hand to his bare chest, heat radiating onto my palm. "Feel my heart beating for you," he implores, melting my defenses.
"Go talk to Elle; I need to help my mother," I say, attempting to pull away, but he draws me back.
"I desire you so much," he whispers, his kiss sending shivers down my spine. "I want you with me."
He leaves, and I'm left hollow with the sudden romance of it all.
I call Kristin for a ride, but she doesn't answer, leaving me to call Mariano, who promptly agrees to come.
"I'm so sorry, Mom," I apologize. "I didn't want you to get kicked out."
"Don't worry, sweetheart, everything happens for a reason," she reassures me with a kiss, her optimism a comfort.
We finish packing when Cameron reappears in jeans and a black hoodie that clings to his perfect body, his blond hair and charming eyes stirring the volcano within me.
"What are you doing here, Cameron?"
"I'm here to drive you two."
"There's no need; someone's coming for me," I say as Mariano pulls up.
"I will take you," Mariano asserts.
"No, because I will," Cameron counters, both behaving like children fighting over a toy.
"You know what?" I address them both. "Do what you want; my mom and I will take a taxi," I say, dragging a suitcase out as my mom follows with another.
Cameron tries to help her, but she refuses; Mariano, however, takes the suitcase from her. Cameron looks at me, a sad expression on his face, which wrenches my heart.
Approaching him, I say, "Don't worry; my mom blames you for everything. It's better that we go with Mariano." He clenches his jaw, clearly displeased.
"I don't understand why you called him," he says, lips pressed tight.
"Let's not start, Cameron. This is best for both of us," I choke out, a lump forming in my throat.
"Bullshit, Jackeline," he grumbles, grabbing me by the waist with primal possessiveness, and kisses me, my knees buckling. He releases my lips with a gentle bite. "This time I'll do things right; I promise," he vows, our foreheads touching, nearly overwhelming me with his tenderness, regardless of the onlooking crowd.
"Jackeline, let's go," my mother interrupts. "I don't want us kicked out by the police."
"I want to invite you to lunch tomorrow," Cameron declares, causing my emotional stability to falter. "Anywhere you want; I won't hide you any longer."
"Let's go," my mom urges.
"Okay, goodbye," I say as he gives me another kiss.
I walk to the car with a foolish smile, which fades instantly as I face Mariano.
I feel sorry for him; he's been so kind to me, but how do I just switch my feelings? If there were a switch to change whom I love, I'd press it to want Mariano instead, to avoid complications. He's everything any woman would want: kind, tender, romantic, attentive, the perfect man. Yet, I'm torn between Mariano's romance and Cameron's rough edge. Maybe I'm crazy, but that's how I feel, if only I could combine them, it'd be perfect.
