The Mafia Don's Runaway Wife
Chapter 4 - Late
I was still awake when people began leaving.
Half of them were drunk out of their minds.
The other half were so tired they were barely able to stand while our special taxi service shuttled them back to their doorstep.
Eventually, Kai emerged again.
Since he wasn't expecting me, he had scheduled back-to-back meetings the whole evening.
While I was looking down at the cleanup crew sanitising every surface, Kai walked up to me holding a bottle of Dom Perignon.
Kai Blackburn
Care for a glass?
I smiled as he sat next to me, popping open the champagne and pouring us both a glass.
Aria Summers
Is this an apology?
Kai Blackburn
Yes, is it working?
Aria Summers
Apologising with a $375 bottle of Dom Perignon that I technically paid for.
Aria Summers
Naturally, I'll accept your apology.
He chuckled as our glasses clung together before we took a sip.
The bubbly champagne tickled my taste buds.
Aria Summers
You have nothing to apologise for.
Kai Blackburn
No. You just went through something and I should have been right here next to you.
Aria Summers
I'm not a child, Kai. I don't need to be coddled.
Kai Blackburn
I'm not coddling you, Ari.
Kai Blackburn
You're important to me. More important than you could ever realise.
Kai Blackburn
I'm lost without you. My life has no meaning outside of 'us'.
Kai Blackburn
No, let me finish.
Kai Blackburn
Ari, to me, you are more important than anyone.
Kai Blackburn
More important than a brother, a son, a wife, a girlfriend, anything.
Kai Blackburn
We're soulmates.
He reached up and placed both of his hands on my cheeks.
Kai Blackburn
Keeping you safe is my life's purpose now.
Kai Blackburn
Don't go running into danger though. Remember, I can't kill, so my skills as a hitman are limited.
He smiled and pressed his forehead against mine, sighing.
Kai Blackburn
That's a relief, I thought you were going to be all grouchy and grumpy that I left you here alone.
Aria Summers
When have you ever seen me grumpy and grouchy?
Kai Blackburn
That one time, at the restaurant, when the waiter served you watered-down Japanese aged whiskey-
Aria Summers
H-Hey, I had every right to be angry. He thought I couldn't tell the difference.
Kai Blackburn
Regardless, grouchy or not, you're special and precious to me.
Kai is like my other half.
The person that you meet, and you immediately know that you are going to get along with them forever.
I met Kai at the lowest point of his life and to him, I gave him purpose.
At the time, I was too young to buy a bar outright, but I wanted some financial independence from my father.
It has always been my dream to open up a club/bar, where music and people unite together.
I gave the starting capital to Kai, who bought and renovated this place into our little paradise.
He manages the internal affairs, and gets 40% of what the bar makes each month, with 20% going into an investment fund for the bar's development and 40% going into my pocket.
In the investment fund, it's been in the works that we expand and buy a new location.
However, that would mean finding someone we both trust to manage it.
The unconditional trust between Kai and I isn't something that you just find everyday.
Suddenly, there was some commotion downstairs, and a guard rushed up the stairs.
Guard
Boss, there's someone here to see you.
Kai Blackburn
I don't have an appointment booked.
Guard
They... don't seem to be taking 'no' for an answer, Sir.
I got up, slipping one of the guns from the table into the sash of my dress.
I walked down the stairs and I immediately recognised the two men that had nearly ambushed me in my bedroom.
But they weren't alone this time.
There was a man between them. From his side profile, I could tell that he was handsome.
Good looks weren't everything though, and the gun that isn't very well hidden underneath his Italian suit tells me that he isn't here to ask me out on a date.
Aria Summers
Can I help you, gentlemen?
The handsome man chuckled.
Romeo Mancini
As a matter of fact, you can help us.
I won't lie, his low voice intimidated me.
His whole outfit screamed dangerously handsome, literally.
With cheekbones that seemed like they could slice me apart, he knew what he wanted.
Turning from a side profile, the handsome man was now looking right at me.
His hands were plunged deep into his coat's pocket, his eyes piercing me until I felt bare.
He made me want to collapse and run away at the same time...
Aria Summers
I'm currently busy. You can come back later, perhaps I'll be able to spare some time then.
Underling
Hey, you can't get away with disrespecting the boss like that, bit-
Just as he pulled his gun out on me, I pulled mine out and pointed it right towards his head.
His other friend pulled his out, pointing it right at me.
Kai immediately saw red and pulled his out, his face becoming as cold as ice.
Kai Blackburn
Say the word, Ari, and I'll drop him-
The man looked at me, and I looked at him.
There was a moment where our eyes were locked together, and a mixture of confusion and fear overcame me.
He then walked over towards one of the tables and sat down on a chair.
His underlings slowly dropped their guns, and I took a deep breath before dropping mine too.
Kai however, still had his up, pointed right at the guy who threatened me.
He snarled, eventually dropping his gun.
I glanced over at Mr. Handsome, who was taking out a cigar.
Aria Summers
You can't smoke in here.
I walked towards him, took the seat in front of him, and crossed my legs.
He ended up lighting the cigar anyway, blowing a plume of smoke in the direction of the bar.
It was finally time to talk.
