"It will all be okay, dear," the lady said, sensing the nervousness Eva was feeling.
"I hope so," Eva replied, trying to stay calm.
The anxiety was intense, the minutes waiting for the babies' arrival felt interminable until the first cry was heard.
The first to be born is Ava, a girl who, despite her small size, seemed quite strong; her cry is heard as soon as she is taken from Eva's womb.
"Here is Ava," the pediatrician said, showing the little baby to the two women.
It wasn't long before the second baby was born, Mathias, who was smaller than his sister; it was evident that he would need careful attention.
"This is Mathias," the pediatrician said, showing the tiny baby.
"What is this little monster? I'm not paying for this deformed child," Margareth yelled, anxious in the small room.
"Calm down, madam," the doctor said.
Margareth left the surgical center very upset, while Eva still didn't quite understand what was going on.
The doctor showed little Mathias to her, and her heart clenched; she couldn't quite define her feelings, but she had an unspeakable sensation upon seeing the small baby.
Margareth, having exited the surgical center, went to her husband, very upset; her dream of being a mother seemed to her to have ended.
"The boy is defective, I refuse to keep a deformed child," she said, agitated.
Riccardo, still present, and Roberto didn't understand a word she was saying; it was all too incoherent.
"Calm down, dear, I can't make out what you're saying," Roberto said, holding his wife's hand.
"The girl is perfect, but the boy has a defect, and I refuse to accept him or pay as agreed."
Riccardo was just listening to the woman, but when she mentioned not paying, he joined the conversation.
"That wasn't the agreement; you will have to pay and keep both babies," he said seriously.
"I will not pay, nor do I want a defective child."
"As I said, that wasn't the agreement," he replied, his voice more aggressive than before.
"I don't care about any agreement; you couldn't even find a woman to do the job properly," the lady yelled.
"Shut your mouth, or I will rip that tongue out," the man said, watching her.
"Be quiet, dear. We'll just keep the girl," the man said, pulling his wife into his arms.
While Margareth remained upset with the entire situation, Eva was still trying to comprehend the conversation she had overheard.
Hours later, after Eva was taken to her room, she attempted to discuss the boy's condition with the doctor, seeking to understand how it might affect the baby's development.
"Doctor, what is this on his lips?"
"Cleft lip, it's a congenital malformation, but don't worry, we can correct it with surgery in a few months."
Eva felt a pain in her chest, unsure how complicated things were going to be.
She was in her room when the couple and Riccardo burst in.
"You useless thing, I'm only taking the girl, and I will sue you," the lady yelled.
"It wasn't my fault; I did everything right," Eva said, nervous.
"I don't care; I will not keep a freak."
"It's treatable; the baby just needs surgery," Eva argued, still anxious.
"It's settled; I'll transfer the money to you, and I'm taking the girl," Margareth said, and before leaving the room, Eva made a decision.
"Either you take both babies, or you don't take any," she said firmly.
"We'll see about that," the lady retorted, leaving.
Eva was certain to cry; tears soaked her face as Riccardo stood still, watching her sob.
"Your son of a bitch, look what you've gotten me into," Eva said, drying her tears.
"It wasn't my fault; I just made you an offer, if you'd accepted my night of pleasure, none of this would've happened."
"Please, Riccardo, you need to help me, don't let her take the children."
"But you don't have the money to care for two babies," he said, his stance serious.
"I'll figure it out, but please don't let her take them," she implored, tears welling in her eyes.
Riccardo looked at her sternly; he didn't want to help, but something made him pity her.
"I won't let her take the child, but don't expect more than that."
"Alright, just as long as I don't lose them," she said, her tears gradually drying.
"But the deal was for them to go with her; you know that," he reminded her seriously.
"Yes, I'm aware, but how could she speak of the boy like that? She loved him for nine months; how can she now treat him like an abomination?"
"I'll have my men come here; that's all I will do, don't forget."
"Thank you; that makes me a bit more relieved. I'll get back to work as a dancer and try to manage."
Riccardo left the room and called his security chief, ordering them to come to the hospital quickly.
Margareth and Roberto were admiring the girl and planning her future, despite Eva's declaration they could no longer take her.
"The girl made it clear; you will not take the babies," Riccardo said, approaching.
"Riccardo, who do you think you are trying to stop me?" Margareth challenged.
"I'm the fucking boss; I didn't kill my father for someone to disrespect me on my territory and still expect to live," he said, drawing his gun.
"Be quiet, Margareth. Riccardo, we've been doing business for years; let's not let this come between us."
"You have two options; you know what you must do."
