"Hahaha, I didn't say anything. So it's true, you found the thief." He says as he sits down, not erasing that annoying smile from his face.
"It's obvious."
"She's attractive, more than I thought."
"Yes, she is, she's nothing special, but I'll be able to collect from her."
"You plan on taking her to bed, and then what?"
"Then nothing, I'll consider her debt settled."
"If I were you, I'd stay away from her as long as possible." I smile upon hearing that.
"Why do you think I should stay away?"
"I've never seen you so obsessed with a woman before."
"I'm not obsessed, it's just that I can't let her make a fool out of me and get away with it."
"I wouldn't tell you this if you had met her under different circumstances, but based on what she did, it's clear that she's not trustworthy."
"Trust me, I know, and to dispel your doubts, why don't we go out tonight with Mariam and her friend."
"That's the attitude I like! See you tonight then, I'll send you the coordinates."
...Chanel's POV...
One week! Just one week and I'm on the verge of quitting! I can't stand it! It's like he's trying to make me resign. His voice, that unpleasant voice, has me on the brink of collapse.
"Chanel."
"What?" I ask exasperated.
"Excuse me, did you ask something?"
"Oh no! How dare you think I would respond in that manner." I know my tone is sarcastic, but today is not a good day. I had to endure his "friend" all morning, and she's so hateful with her condescending way of speaking to me, thinking, I don't even know what she thinks.
"I heard perfectly well, and that is what you said, if that's the case..."
"Wait, this is important." I interrupt, raising my open palm towards him upon seeing an incoming call from my mother. I try to answer, but he doesn't allow me to, snatching the phone from my hand.
"I've already told you, there's nothing more important than me." He snaps irritably.
"Please give me back the phone, it's my mother and it's important."
I watch him hesitate, but he returns the mobile with a warning gesture.
"Hello, Mommy, how are you?"
"I'm good, my love. Could you come home early today? I miss having dinner with you."
"I'm not sure if I can." My voice diminishes, because I miss it too.
"Then I'll wait for you until you return."
"Please don't, you must have dinner on time."
"Don't worry, I'll wait for you."
I turn my back to my boss, as tears threaten to fall. Throughout this week, I've been leaving between eight and nine in the evening, when all the employees have left by six at the latest, because this man is a workaholic and he wasn't joking when he said I would be his shadow.
"Alright, I love you." I end the call and take a deep breath before looking back at my boss.
"Is something wrong?"
"No, but if you don't mind, I wanted to ask you to please allow me to leave at five."
"That's not possible, I have a dinner with a new client and you must accompany me." I sigh resignedly.
"I wasn't aware, it's not in your agenda."
"No, it's not, in fact, he's not even a client yet. He called me personally and would like to meet with me. If things go well, it could be a big deal to become his supplier."
"I understand." I sigh resignedly. He sits down and goes back to his laptop.
"Why did you apply for the position of assistant, being an architect?" His question surprises me, as he hadn't shown any interest in getting to know anything about me until now.
"Not everyone has the option to do what they're passionate about."
"Have you practiced your career? I didn't see on your resume that you have."
"Sometimes things aren't so simple, but I have actually completed a couple of projects. I would have to show them to you." I say, a little excited. "One is a small apartment complex and the other two are a pair of cabins."
"Have you ever done something you regret out of necessity?" His question surprises me, but I don't hesitate to answer.
"Could you help me review this document?"
"Of course, please share it with me."
"There's no need, just come closer."
I approach him and lean my body to get a better view. I start reading mentally, but I lose concentration when I feel his nose brushing against the skin of my neck. Automatically, my breath catches. I slightly turn my face and my eyes meet his. His gaze is penetrating and the color of his eyes slightly more intense than usual. He moves his face a bit closer and his lips are just an inch away from mine.
"What... What are you doing?" My voice sounds weaker and more insecure than I'd like.
"What do you want me to do?"
My gaze drops to his lips and he reveals a perfect row of white teeth. I take a breath.
"I don't know what you're referring to, sir." I try to make my voice sound firm as I create distance between us.
"You can go."
"Where to?" I narrow my eyes as I ask the question.
"To your house."
"Are you sure? It's only three in the afternoon."
"Believe me, I'm not disoriented in time." The ogre-like voice returns, the one I detest so much. "Take the rest of the afternoon, freshen up a bit, I'll pick you up at seven."
"Thank you, you have no idea how grateful I am."
"Don't do it, I actually do it for myself, it wouldn't look good if my assistant has their hair in that state."
"What state? For your information, my hair is the best of my attributes, and I don't allow..."
"You don't allow me what?" He asks threateningly, standing up and moving dangerously closer. "You're not here to give opinions, let alone to challenge me, but if you prefer, come with me to my house, I need to shower and change clothes, perhaps you can assist me with that." He continues advancing towards me as I walk backward, attempting to maintain the distance between us, but he doesn't stop his intimidating actions until I find myself cornered against the wall. He places his hands on both sides of my face, and his nose brushes against my neck, causing my skin to prickle.
"Sir, I'm not comfortable with this situation."
"What situation?" His breath brushes...
"I... I don't like you."
