Episode 4

Pov. Richard

I find myself receiving candidates to be my new assistant, as Clarens was unable to fulfill the task I assigned to him, so I demoted him, I thought about firing him, but Larry intervened on his behalf.

"Working with you would be a pleasure if given the opportunity," concludes the brunette in front of me.

"Once the interviews are finished, you will receive a notification to your email informing you of the decision. For now, you may leave."

The woman gets up and exits my office, not without giving me a flirtatious smile which I return. Lydia, my secretary, enters and gives me a brief introduction of the next applicant's profile, while I review her resume on my laptop.

So, it was unnecessary to find you, Chanel, that's your name, little thief.

"Bring her in," I order Lidia.

"Right away."

Lidia introduces her and, once the aforementioned enters, she closes the door.

Once inside, the first thing she does is close her eyes, I don't know if she does it unconsciously, but she opens her clenched hands and shakes her fingers, clearly nervous. I stand up and approach her as much as I can. She has no idea what awaits her once she recognizes me; she will regret ever crossing paths with me. I inhale her scent, and it's truly annoying, a strange fruity mixture, too sweet for my taste. When I first saw her, I didn't notice the number of freckles on her face, another strike against her. Freckles are not aesthetically pleasing, and her lips are too thin for my liking. Those long eyelashes don't suit her either, as they create a shadow that makes her freckles appear even darker against her fair skin. Does she not know what the sun is? A tan wouldn't hurt her.

She inhales deeply and slowly lifts her upper eyelids, revealing her blue thief-like eyes.

"Good morning," is the first thing that comes out of her lips.

"Good morning?" I ask, raising an eyebrow. I've never known someone so brazen.

"It's a pleasure, Mr. Ford," she says while extending her hand for a handshake and taking a step back, apparently not liking my proximity.

"Have we met before, Miss Walker?" I ask, giving her the chance to beg for forgiveness.

"Definitely not. I would remember," she replies. My jaw tightens. Who does she think she is? Not only does she steal from me, but she also has the audacity not to remember me. I circle the desk and sit down, motioning for her to take the chair opposite me.

"Where have you been for the last few months?" I am genuinely curious to know where she has been hiding.

"Um... I was in England," she responds.

"What does a woman of limited means do to afford a trip to England?" She must have stolen more than a cellphone to do so.

"Work, that's what normal people do," she says. Or decent people who don't go around stealing from everyone they come across.

"Do you consider yourself part of that normal crowd?"

"I am," she answers. And the lies continue.

"What were you doing in England?"

"I worked as a saleswoman in a flower shop. I know it's not the experience needed for this position, but..."

"I didn't ask what you were working as, I asked what motivated you to go to England."

"They were personal reasons... and if you don't mind, I'd prefer to omit the topic," she says. You have no idea to whom you're denying information. If you knew what I'm capable of, I would crush you.

"The interview is over. If you qualify, my secretary will be in touch. Now please leave..."

"With permission," she says. I focus on my laptop and ignore her final words. She leaves and closes the door.

My secretary enters once again.

"Sir, the next candidate is..."

"I will not see anyone else. Schedule an appointment for tomorrow with the woman who just left. She should come to work tomorrow and be present at seven."

"But sir, office hours start at eight."

"You'd better not question my orders, or else you'll also start at that time."

"I apologize, sir. It won't happen again."

"I'm going to be busy, don't let anyone interrupt me."

"As you wish," she concludes and exits, closing the door behind her.

Stealing from me is going to cost you, you have no idea how much.

...Chanel's POV....

Upon leaving that place, I decide to walk home. It's far, but I want, I need to clear my mind. One hour and thirty-seven minutes, that's how long it took me to get home. As I enter, my mother looks at me with a smile.

"How did it go? When do you start?" she asks excitedly. She has so much faith in me that I have no choice but to lie to her. Well, it's not necessary, but her happy face deserves it.

"They haven't confirmed it yet, but you know what? I think the position is mine. That man was amazed by my resume. He even told me that I'm an admirable woman!" Oh my God, forgive me. Please don't let me burn in the flames of hell for lying.

"I knew it!" She approaches me and gives me a loud kiss on the cheek. "We have to celebrate this. Buy the best bottle of wine and get a turkey. I'll prepare it for dinner."

"Nothing would please me more than that, Mom, but you know we have to save money. Plus, you shouldn't consume alcohol due to chemotherapy."

"That was before. I'm sure you'll have a great salary. Besides, I want to enjoy myself before I die. You can't deny me that."

"Mama, I still haven't been confirmed for the position."

"Are you kidding? He's amazed by your resume and tells you that you're admirable. I'm sure he'll pay you more than expected!"

Note to self: Learn to control your stupid tongue and never, I mean never, dare to lie to your mother again, unless you want immediate punishment and a demand for an expensive bottle of wine.

Internally disheartened, because on the outside I must show a broad smile, I go to my room.

I sigh as I take out the few savings I have left from a drawer to go and buy what my mother asked for.
