Episode 10

"My people, I need your assistance to prioritize our actions. What do you deem more important: Freeing our brothers who've been captured, or finding our Luna along with our heir?"

I looked around and saw them splitting into small groups, discussing the matter. I am standing at the podium, facing the crowd that fills the small council meeting hall. I have just outlined the plight of the Death Claws pack, which has fallen under a dark enchantment, and to sustain it, they have been stealing our male offspring.

We have brought the female pups destined for sacrifice to our pack, but without a Luna to make decisions, organizing everything has been a challenge. Additionally, I informed them of the witches' intentions to sacrifice our Luna, the reasoning behind which I do not know. However, it is clear she is in danger if left alone.

After much deliberation, they appointed a spokesperson who stood before everyone and stated:

"The consensus is that rescuing the Luna is of utmost importance. She will empower our pack and will be safe here."

Andre is my Beta, a male who is strong, intelligent, and cunning. Skilled in combat, he does not rely solely on brute strength; he assesses the situation before using his surroundings against the enemy. He rarely loses a battle, only I am more powerful than he.

"If this is your decision, I will set out immediately to find her." With that, I left the hall and made my way to the forest.

Yesterday, we investigated everything we could about the Death Claws pack. I sent two nimble spies there, both with sharp wolves and excellent senses, tasked with surveillance and information gathering from the bewitched pack.

They returned at night with news that the pack was nocturnal, sleeping underground by day in subterranean dens. That explained why we found the children emerging from the soil. Thankfully, my spies managed to enter the foreboding house shielded by a talisman given by our own witch and returned with many documents and USB drives from the deceased Alpha's office.

The day was spent debating and arranging the safeguarding of our pack. Witch Areza was busy crafting potions to counteract other magic and erecting protective barriers around our dwellings. By nightfall, we were all weary and took to sleeping in shifts to maintain the watch.

But not once did I disconnect from my mate. Her wolf surfaced the moment our pup was abducted. She is a strong, impressive Alpha — large, beautiful, and warrior-like — and this allowed me to track her thoughts. After fleeing the Death Claws attack, I felt her finding refuge and tending to our little one.

Today, I sensed their separation and guessed by her path that she went to the city to deal with matters concerning that despicable man. If it were up to me, she would never return there. My female has no need to dwell among those humans — our pack is thriving, and I can provide everything she requires.

I run through the forest, heading to the main road where I feel she’ll be returning. Uncertain of her company, but aware of two vehicles, I hasten with spare clothes draped over my neck, aiming for a road stretch flanked by bends that will shield me from the view of passersby.

With my wolf hearing, I catch the hum of the cars and, with a leap, stand in the middle of the road, halting their advance. The unfamiliar driver, a wolf like myself but not from my pack, slows the vehicles to a stop. I fix my gaze on the driver, growling softly to assert my position.

Sniffing the air, I catch her scent and also the aroma of milk from her. This female is...

I edge closer to where she's seated, conscious of the door behind me closing. Our eyes lock, engaging in a silent clash of wills. The approaching male's deep voice breaks the tension with a civil greeting:

"Condor, all well?"

""Hello, Dueine,"" I reply telepathically though he's not of my pack, he’s opened his mind to me since as an Alpha, it’s my prerogative ""This is my mate. I’m going to change, keep an eye on her for me.

I shift behind the vehicle, resume my human form, and get dressed. Containing my wolf, Fred, is crucial; left to his own devices, he would have slain everyone in sight and dragged her back to lock her up until our baby was retrieved. I return to the side of the car, greet my friend Dueine with a handshake, and face her with stern seriousness.

She steps out of the car and meets my gaze once more. A growl slips from me, not of my doing but from Fred, who brooks no challenge from a female, even our own.

"Stop growling and state your purpose. I need to nurse our pup waiting at home."

"Don't test me, mate, or I won’t even let you speak." I growl again.

"Enough posturing and speak your mind."

"The obvious: I want you and “our” little one."

"I won't accompany you; we have substantial work and research ahead to thwart the witches corrupting the Death Claws."

So she too is contemplating the rescue. I scratch my slight beard, taking in her gauntness yet undeniable charm.

"Get in the car. I'm coming with you" I bend down to the driver "I'll take the wheel."

Moments later, we’re en route, her silent gaze fixed out the window, mine filled with the scent of maternal milk and an overwhelming desire to meet my daughter, our heir.
