The halls are dressed in blue and white and the tiles are a checker board with humans as the pieces. The whole building sends a chill down my spine and reminds me of something out of my nightmares. I do not want to be here, I think and I wrap my arms around my chilled body while eyes are always on me, this is the last place I want to be. Unfortunately it is my fault I’m here, my doing, there is no going back now. The moment I opened the back door of the classroom. Everything became fragments. No, since the day I came to school with Ross. Laughter sounds around the class –joined with excited conversations. Model worthy girls perch on the tables like exotic birds gossiping and giggling. A breath of air brushes my ear. I follow the breeze and see a blue striped paper plane gracefully gliding through the air before sliding across the tiled hall to stop with its nose against the wall. Groups of high schoolers sit around the room laughing and causing all kinds of ruckus, all except one girl that sit silently staring at her phone screen with massive headphones which appear to be permanently strapped to her head. Freya isn’t a cheerful type of lady, even though she looks like the energetic type.. from her face. As I walk through the classroom, she stood up and glares at the other girls while walking towards me, since those girls start whispering when I first come in. There’s a moment of sudden silence hit the classroom, I could hear footsteps, it sounds like a 3 cm high -heels. I first thought that kind of shoes are forbidden, but I was wrong.
Again, it’s Sierra. Wearing her ridiculous pinky costume, with big red bow on her head and dressed in all pink.
Sierra stands with crossed arms on her chest, the other 2 girls appeared, stood up right between Sierra, they look like dancing seals ready to perform dressed in Powerpuff Girls? Wait... did Yaya actually spray her whole hair into blonde? Are they really gonna dance with that slutty costume on? I don’t care, but I heard there’s a Basketball Tournament today, they must be the cheerleader team or something. Jimmy will absolutely skip the class today.
I rubbed my forehead and stared her with resting –bitch –face expression which pissed her off a little bit. Thinking about how far Sierra wanted to prank me, I have to be brave, although BRAVE isn’t enough. Sierra stared me with disgust, “Are you trying to mock me, huh?”
I shook my head and smile at her. Then I notice Yaya and Cate's eyes glaring at Freya. Sierra clears her throat, “You!” the queen bee pointed at Freya.
“I need to teach you a lesson!” she stepped forward and I block her way, again and again until she pissed even more. I tilted my head and saw Freya stood still, she expresses a terribly annoying gaze towards Sierra. Freya helped me out last time, this time I have to protect her myself.
Sierra moaned, “WHAT IS YOUR PROBLEM?!” she grunts while finally gave up playing with me, failed walking past my territory.
I shrug my shoulders, “You know, neighbor? I have no problem with you. But your attitude is making me uncomfortable”
She quirked an eyebrow, “Oh! Then? So?”
Freya walks slowly beside me with arms folded on her chest. With powerful aura of Freya, the brave soul of mine flaming inside my body, I feel confident for the first time. After a pause, I speak again in a sarcastic tone, “So…”
“Get out”
Students inside the class, Me, Freya, Sierra and her 2 followers turned our heads immediately, it sounds from the back door. Ross just came back with Kendrick, Kendrick cheerfully smiles at me after he saw me.
“I said get out” Ross said again. Sierra looks annoyed, she then turned around and disappeared with her girls. What a relief!
I tilted my head looking at Ross. He threw his gaze away, sat down on his desk playing with his phone. And.... Freya, I was so curious how could she ended up being Sierra’s enemy? Is it because she helped me?
At the canteen.
“Freya”
“Hmm?”
Freya bites her nail, is that a habit of her while feeling anxious? I want to not care about what happened to her and Sierra, but I can’t.
I put my bread down and say “Freya, if you need someone to talk to. I’m willing to hear or even help” sometimes I feel kinda weird talking to girl in my age, I usually talk to my mom. I was normally scared of being in trouble or interrupting into people's business but since Freya helped me at the restroom. I can’t be the old selfish girl I was, plus I’m getting bored of being alone.
“I mean.. I was just trying to help” I muttered under my breath.
Seems like I triggered her a bit, “You know.. you can talk to me, and I’ll try to help. That’s all I want to say” I am not that stuttering mess kind of school –girl anymore, at least I can talk in a proper way.
Freya scoffed, “Yes.. Thanks” continue biting her chocolate bread.
Is that the only sarcastic answer I got?
She clears her throat, “You know....”
I took a bite of my peanut butter bread and lift my head to catch her eyes. “Sometimes I wonder why you like to be alone, I mean… everyone got their own reasons, and that’s why I am curious..” she shrugged, “Curious of other’s opinion about being a high school invisible” she added.
I took a long mumble, wheels spinning inside my head for about a minute, “Just be yourself?” I said as I lifted an eyebrow. They just came out from my mouth I don’t know why, cause it applies on me, and yes I don’t like troubles and I like it to be alone, I mean I was..
Freya flinched as she heard me quoting myself, she stop munching and begins laughing really hard which makes the other students staring at us. I stood up immediately to stop her, “Ssstt! Freya you are too loud!” I whispered. Only blushing would have been no problem for me. I still have no idea what so funny for her but my face is go as red as a beetroot and radiate heat like a hot pan. I feel like cooking a three course meal on my face. Freya still laughing, until about 2 minutes later, she stopped but still holding her tummy, “I am so sorry” hasn’t stop laughing.
This girl just ruined my reputation at the canteen. I don’t even know what so funny about that common quote.
“What so funny, Freya?” I speak in exasperation grunt.
“But..”
Freya smiles, finally.. the sweet and cute smile she rarely shows. “Thanks for making me laugh.. Its been a while since the last laugh I had” she continues with a shrug.
The moment she thanked me, I could feel the whole world stops, is that a compliment from a FRIEND? Well, I feel so happy to hear that. Is this how it feels when we got a compliment from a friend? Sorry mom, I never trusted you about having a friend in my life. I feel like crying…
Freya turned to the original Freya again, the poker faced –lady “An answer please? I am still curious by the way”
“Oh” I put my bread down and drink my orange juice box before I start talking.
“I don’t know Freya.. Because I think it is better to be invisible, no fame, no judgement, no bully, no doubt.. that’s for me.. I mean, I love being peaceful”
I thought life without a friend would be fun, but it turns out boring. I ever think that would be no problem as long as I have mom, the only person I trust the most, the only person I talk to everyday. But once my mom busy dating, I became so lonely. I really miss my mom, I miss having a long chitchat with my mom, talking about how my dad and her new wife’s life, talking about the gossips she heard from her friends, talking about the love sick she felt back when she was young… everything.. Mom, I miss talking to you..
“Hey, you okay?” Freya sounds care but looks like about to beat me to death, her expression is unpredictable. I don’t understand her sometimes. Is she really care about me or she wants to beat me right now?
“So…” I clear my throat, “How about you?”
But then she frowned, “I-I-I-I-It’s okay” I immediately say, “Take your time, tell me when you are ready. I’ll listen” I implied. She doesn’t even smile, do I need to give her another shitty common quotes again to make her at least laugh? But well, no.. not at school. It’s so embarrassing.
Freya blew a harsh breath, her fingers busy playing the glass “I and Sierra were rivals since grade school.”
She gave me a quick short smile, “And she stopped when I decided to ignore her tease or her pranks. I was very careful back then...” I feel guilty, so so guilty. Is it because of me?
Freya snorted a laugh, “What with the long face?” as she took a bite of her chocolate bread “Her personality is faker than her tits” she stated.
“Wait- WHAT??!!”
Freya laughs “She wears push up bra to school”
“Oh shit” I sniggered. “I first thought you mean she had a ****** implants or something”
“You know, Irene? No need to be scared of her. You only need to be careful of your previous bullies, the ugly ponytail gang”
I got goosebumps whenever I think about it. Those girls who previously attacked me at the backyard still my worst enemy. They tend to glare at me while I walk past their class, it happens everyday. I heard they got a month detention.
To be honest, I’m scared but I can’t stay weak or I will end up like James. Sometimes I wonder, what if that guy start bullying me?
Freya isn’t here with me, she has something to do with her extracurricular. A guy, a tall -buff guy who just crossed into my mind a few seconds ago while thinking about poor James being bullied.
He clicked his tongue, as usual he isn’t alone, “So...” Dennis stares at me, watching me from head to toe and toe to head as he blocked my way. This time, it’s getting worse, I’m in a big trouble, I am facing the gangster of the school.
“I heard you make my classmate got detention” Dennis walking towards me slowly. “Irene...right?”
I can’t move my body, it stiffened all of sudden. I know I can just run through this hallway or I could easily call out a teacher to help me but I can’t speak a word, my jaw turned rigid, and I’m starting to tremble. Students are just watching, waiting for the show, I don’t understand how could they do that to me. I wonder how to escape from this situation or just disappear. Please.... somebody help me.
“You dare to touch her?” the low voice startled everyone. Ross walks slowly, he wrapped an arm around my shoulder “Lets go, Irene”. Dennis stepped back, but I know he isn’t giving up and I need to be very careful of him. I’m scared, of course I’m terribly scared, especially when I see how he treats James and the other students in this school. Dennis doesn’t care whether you are a girl or a boy.
But Ross... actually save me twice today.
