As soon as she left the kitchen, she found David standing in the dining room, reviewing his briefcase.
"Good morning, dear, I was just about to look for you. Are you okay?," she asked.
"Yes, we need to talk. Please, sit down."
"Breakfast is ready, Susan looked towards the kitchen and that's when she saw the suitcase. Are you going on a trip?," she asked, surprised that David had packed his suitcase.
"That's what I want to talk to you about. He took out a folder and put it on the table."
I'm leaving, Susan! These are the divorce papers, please read them.
"If you're joking, it's a terrible one," she replied, but something in his gaze indicated that it wasn't a joke. David, we just celebrated our anniversary, you can't be serious,"she said, distressed."
"The decision has been made. I know it's hard for you to understand now, but trust me, you'll accept it with time. I will leave the house to you and you will have a good pension, I promise you won't lack anything."
"What do I have to understand, David? If I did something that bothered you, just tell me and I promise to make an effort to fix it."
"It's not that, I simply don't feel good here anymore. Nothing will change my decision."
"But we just celebrated our anniversary a few hours ago. Can't it be this bad? Maybe if we go to therapy..."
"I won't go to therapy. I will send someone to pick up the rest of my things," he said, taking his briefcase and grabbing his suitcase.
"David, please wait, let's talk, we can fix this," she said as she followed him, trying to stop him.
"This is beyond fixing, understand it."
I've stopped loving you!, he shouted at her.
She stood there in the middle of the living room and let him go. She saw him close the door and heard the car. But she didn't follow him, she could only think about what he had said. At what point did her husband stop loving her and she didn't notice?
David drove his car towards his new home. He had prepared everything to take a few days off. Although he was worried about Susan, he knew that in the long run, it was for the best.
As soon as the door of the penthouse opened and Chloe saw his suitcase, she ran into his arms, screaming.
"Oh, my love, finally! I can't believe we'll never be apart again, she shouted, passionately searching for him."
"Never again," he said, hugging her tightly and kissing her again.
It was past noon, and Susan was still sitting in the living room. The breakfast remained untouched on the kitchen table.
She tried to process what had happened, but she couldn't understand. Either they lived in two completely different places or they had a very different concept of what a bad relationship was because, from her point of view, their marriage had no problems.
It was afternoon when she locked the doors and headed to her room. When she saw the folder on the table, she took the documents.
Minutes later, she got into bed.
...****************...
Meanwhile, David Cooper settled into his new home.
He was lying in bed next to Chloe.
"Why don't we go out to dinner to celebrate?," she said.
"Listen, I took a few days off so we can be together here. I can't go around Seattle with you just yet. Susan didn't take the divorce news well, and I don't want people to gossip until the divorce is finalized."
"But that could take months, there's no guarantee that she'll sign the divorce papers. I'm tired of having to hide, I thought that would end when you moved here," she said, moving away abruptly and crossing her arms, very upset.
"My love, in a few weeks, all of this will be behind us. We just need to give Susan some time. Besides, I don't want our daughters to hear about it from someone else. Come on, smile for me, the day is prettier when you smile at me. What do you think if we take advantage of these days I took off and go somewhere? Miami, Las Vegas, we can go shopping."
She smiled at him, I like the idea. I've never been to Miami, I would love to go, she said, kissing him.
...****************...
They had been in Miami for four days. That afternoon, they were at the airport waiting to board the flight and return to Seattle.
David knew they had been calling his office. To his surprise, it wasn't Susan, but Doris, the cleaning lady.
When that day he returned Doris' call, she informed him that Susan had not gotten up or eaten in days, refusing to answer the calls from her friends, even her daughters.
He asked her to pack her things, he would send someone to pick them up.
The house phone started ringing, it was Amelie.
"What do you mean my mom is not here? I have been calling her for days, even her cell phone. What's going on? I called dad and he's on a trip."
"But Miss Amelie, what do you want me to say?" Doris replied.
"You know what, don't say anything, Amelie hung up and called her sister."
"I'm going home, are you coming with me?" Amelie asked.
"I can't, I have a lot of work, besides, if something had happened to mom, dad would have told us. When I talked to him yesterday," he said everything was fine.
"It doesn't matter, I'm going anyway. Mom is not like this," Amelie replied.
...****************...
Doris was gathering the books from the office as David had ordered, she still needed to gather her clothes, but the problem was that Susan was locked in her room.
She was arranging the boxes when the door opened.
"Miss Amelie," welcome,"said Doris."
"Where's mom? What are those boxes doing here?" She asked.
"They are your father's things," he asked me to pack everything, he no longer lives here.
"What are you saying! Where's my mother?" Amelie asked.
"Locked in her room," Doris replied.
"Mom! Mom! she shouted as she climbed the stairs."
Susan was in the bathroom, she looked at herself in the mirror, she couldn't believe how bad she looked. She washed her face before hearing the screams.
"Mom! Mom! Open the door!"
"Amelie! she shouted, going to open the door."
"Mom! she repeated and hugged her mother."
"For God's sake, Amelie, what are you doing here? Are you okay?" she asked, feeling her body.
"No, I'm not okay. I've been calling you for days, and when I arrived I saw all these boxes. Why didn't you tell me that dad left? Amelie sobbed."
"Oh, sweetheart, forgive me, I didn't want to worry you. We just had a fight, we will probably work things out. Come, calm down, sit down. You shouldn't worry about us, you're the one we should be worrying about."
"Mom! How can you expect me not to worry? Look at yourself!"
"You know I'm very sensitive and I haven't taken it well, but everything will be fine. In fact, I'm hungry. What do you think if you tell Doris to prepare something to eat while I change into something decent?" she said while trying to calm her down.
Amelie nodded and headed towards the living room.
Susan stood up and went to her dressing room. The truth was she didn't feel like doing anything, but her daughter shouldn't see her falling apart. She chose a nice colorful pair of pants to cheer up her daughter.
"You can do this, Susan. It's for your daughter! she told herself."
Amelie was furious, she called her father, but the call went straight to voicemail.
Then she called her sister.
"I'm working, Amelie. What do you want?" Ava asked in a bad mood.
"I don't care about what you're doing. Did you know that dad left mom?" she asked indignantly.
"What do you mean he left her? What did mom do for him to leave her?" Ava asked.
"And why does mom have to be responsible? I want to go see dad. Either you come here immediately or I'll come and drag you by your hair. Mom needs us."
After she hung up, Ava Cooper headed to her boss's office.
"Come in, Alexander Cavelli shouted."
"Mr. Cavelli, I'm sorry to bother you, but I need a permission to be absent for one or two days. I have a family problem," Ava said.
"Alright, you can do that. I hope it's nothing serious."
"Thank you, Mr. Cavelli. I've been working on what you asked," she said and handed him a folder.
"Perfect, I'll read it later and we'll discuss it when you come back," Alexander replied.
