The next morning, in the dining room of the Tan household.
"When are you planning to quit your job at Tj Corp, Renata?" Zayn asked, sitting next to Renata.
"I'm submitting my resignation to HR today," Renata replied.
Alvaro's hand, poised with a spoon and fork, paused upon hearing this.
"Why do you want to resign, Renata?" Sanaya inquired curiously.
Renata stayed silent, pretending not to hear Sanaya's question.
Sanaya's expression immediately fell.
"Sanaya is asking you something," Rendra interjected, feeling sorry for his stepdaughter being ignored.
Renata remained indifferent toward Rendra.
Rendra clenched his fists, wishing he could scold his daughter, but he restrained himself due to Zayn's warning from the day before.
"I'm done," Renata announced after finishing her breakfast.
"Are you going to work with Zayn again?" Zayn asked.
"No, I want to try out the new car."
Renata grinned, flaunting the car keys that Zayn had just given her. Her brother had been generous, even without her asking for a car. She wanted to refuse, but Zayn insisted it was a present for her recovery from a recent accident.
"Zayn, you bought Renata a new car? Why not one for Sanaya too? Don’t show favoritism," Rendra said.
"Favoritism? Doesn't father look at himself in the mirror?" Zayn retorted with a cynical gaze.
Rendra fell silent, clearly aware of the truth in Zayn's words.
"Do you want a new car?" Alvaro asked Sanaya, who still looked downcast, "I will buy you one."
Sanaya looked up at her husband, "No, it's fine," she answered with a gentle smile.
Alvaro smiled back, "If you ever want something, just tell me."
"Yes," Sanaya nodded, her cheeks tinted with color.
"Oh my, my son-in-law is so kind. Unlike someone who is now known as Sanaya's brother. Understandable though, Sanaya is the stepdaughter in this family," Santy remarked sarcastically, tears streaming down her face.
The middle-aged woman had always been dramatic.
"My wife, that's not true, I love Sanaya dearly," Rendra said, taken in by Santy's crocodile tears.
"It’s only right if Zayn loves me more than Sanaya, as I am his biological sister. It would be selfish of Sanaya to expect equal affection. Especially since she has already monopolized all of Rendra's love," Renata stated flatly.
Santy glared at Renata with resentment, as did Sanaya.
Why was this girl able to resist with words that silenced everyone? The Angel of the past would never corner her own father like that.
** **
In the HR department.
"My resignation has been rejected?"
Renata could hardly believe it, her desire to resign was dashed.
"You're still bound by a six-month work contract here."
Renata was disheartened by HR's words; quitting a job at a major company was not as easy as she thought.
She could pay the resignation penalty for terminating the work relationship before the contract expired. However, she didn’t want to trouble Zayn with the substantial fee. Reluctantly, Renata realized she would have to work another six months.
Leaving HR's office and heading to the staff room, Renata was called out.
"Renata!"
She stopped in her tracks at the sound of Alvaro's voice.
*Thud*
Alvaro pushed a battered man to the floor before Renata. Sanaya was sobbing beside him, her face bruised, hair disheveled, clutching Alvaro's jacket tightly around her.
What on earth was going on?
Renata was utterly confused. The crowd gathered to see what would unfold next.
"How dare you hire someone to assault Sanaya!" Alvaro bellowed, veins bulging with anger.
Renata stood silent, clearly not responsible for what Alvaro accused her of. Was she being framed?
She looked at Sanaya, hiding behind Alvaro's strong form. The girl was terrified.
Renata remembered this scenario from the novel. It was one of Angel's schemes to disrupt Sanaya and Alvaro's relationship.
Would the novel's plot remain unchanged even though Renata tried altering it? And who had sent that man?
She had an idea.
"It wasn't me," Renata denied.
"Just admit it! Even he claims you sent him!" Alvaro continued to blame Renata.
He'd have no reason to blame her if the man hadn't confessed to being sent by Renata.
It started when Sanaya alerted Alvaro that a strange man was following her, fortunate for her that the man did not succeed in defiling her before Alvaro arrived to save the day.
Although Alvaro had begun to trust that Renata would no longer bother him and Sanaya, it seemed her words had been a lie.
Disappointment and anger filled him now.
"Send him? I don't even know that man," Renata maintained her calm demeanor.
"Since when do criminals admit their guilt," sneered an onlooker.
"She's worse than I imagined," another chimed in.
"A rotten heart can never change."
"I regret ever feeling sympathy for her."
Suddenly, Renata was cornered by a crowd hurling insults again.
"Renata, I can’t believe you’ve gone this far. As a friend, I’ve always advised you against doing evil," Anya proclaimed, seizing the chance to reinforce her image as a good friend.
Renata listened with a wry smile.
A good friend, really? How ironic.
Unbeknownst to her, Renata was aware of who was behind the slander.
Renata slightly bowed, seized the bruised man's face, "Are you sure I sent you?" she asked with piercing eyes.
He swallowed hard, then nodded rigidly.
"Still lying? How much did they pay you? I can give you three times more if you tell the truth," Renata pressed.
"I—I—"
"Enough, Sister! I forgive Renata. Please don’t threaten this man," Sanaya cut off the man’s words.
Renata released her grip, eyeing Sanaya flatly. Hey, she wasn't seeking Sanaya's forgiveness, so why was the girl speaking like that? And who was threatening the man?
"Why are you still so kind to someone who tried to harm you? You shouldn't forgive her so easily," Alvaro told Sanaya, believing her to be angelic in nature.
"Let me show you the true nature of your 'good' wife, Alvaro."
