The sound of footsteps in high heels echoed as Renata continued her stride.
Renata walked casually down the hallway toward the CEO's office, both her hands clutching her broken phone tightly. If she was indeed being laid off, she would at least demand compensation for her damaged device.
Moreover, Renata was planning to resign from the company anyway. She had already told Zayn that she wanted to continue her studies, and Zayn was very supportive of her decision. An older brother always wants what's best for his sister.
Strange glances watched Renata. Yes, she was aware of them. Looks similar to those she received this morning. Envies, scoffs, and disgust from her female colleagues, as well as flirty looks from the males—a truly terrible reputation.
It seems Renata owed a debt of thanks to Anya for gossiping about her behind her back. Who else but Anya could have tarnished her reputation?
"I would like to see Mr. J," Renata said to the CEO’s Assistant──Arvin Antoine.
Arvin smiled warmly; thankfully, he didn't seem to dislike her. Renata had thought the assistant CEO would be a woman as unpleasant as Salvina, stern and annoying.
"Angelica Renata Tan?" Arvin confirmed.
"Yes," Renata replied.
"Go on in, Mr. J is in his office."
"Alright, thank you, um..."
"Arvin."
"Thank you, Assistant Arvin."
Arvin nodded his head.
Afterward, Renata resumed her walk until she stopped right in front of a brown-painted door that read 'CEO's Office.'
Her heart fluttered for some reason; Renata took a deep breath to calm her nerves. She straightened her clothes, not wanting to leave a bad impression, even though her reputation was already tarnished for having cursed at that man.
Renata winced at the memory. Her barbaric nature still lurked within her. How unlucky she was. Wanting to resign but having to deal with the eldest son of the Tjong family.
*Knock... Knock*...
She knocked on the grey door, then heard a voice inside indicating she could enter.
Renata’s gaze was fixed on the broad shoulders of the man sitting with his back to her.
Shoulders so broad and familiar to her.
Then Renata took her seat. She soon glanced away from the shoulders that quickened her heartbeat. They were so wide and strong, reminding her of someone.
She dismissed the thought immediately; what mattered most now was resolving the issue with the CEO.
"Good afternoon, Mr. J."
The chair spun around, as did the man’s body.
Jet-black hair, dark irises, thin lips, thick eyebrows, a straight nose.
Renata froze, staring at Mr. J incredulously. His face was strikingly similar to her late husband.
"Do you know why I called you here, Miss Angel?"
Not only his appearance, but his voice was also incredibly similar.
"Jefra..."
Mr. J's face showed surprise at hearing his first name called out since he was indeed Jefra Tjong. However, most people called him J, with only his mother calling him Jefra.
Who was this girl? After making him curious for having cursed at him, now she casually called him by his first name.
Mr. J was even more stunned when he saw the girl's tears.
"What's wrong?"
"It can't be..."
Renata stood up, the broken phone she had been gripping fell to the floor. Her head shook, tears continued to spill from her eyes.
"Miss Ang──"
In disbelief of what she was seeing, Renata turned away, leaving a bewildered Mr. J behind.
Soon after, Arvin appeared, probably because he saw Renata leaving the CEO's office in a rush.
"What have you done to that girl, Mr. J?" Arvin asked, assuming the worst about J.
"I didn't do anything."
The man had indeed done nothing; he was just as perplexed by the girl's utterly strange behavior.
Actually, his reason for summoning the girl to his office was to take responsibility for accidentally stepping on her phone that morning. He had an important meeting at the time, and there was no chance to take responsibility at the moment.
In fact, he could have asked someone else to deal with the girl. But Mr. J was somewhat curious about the girl who had insulted him with the term 'Baji ngan,’ especially since she had done so loudly in the company's busy lobby.
Didn't she know who he was? But if not, why call him Jefra?
His mild curiosity now turned to intense intrigue.
"Miss Angel's phone has fallen."
Arvin placed a phone with a shattered screen on the table, having just picked it up from the floor.
"Fix it," commanded Mr. J.
"Yes, sir."
"Do you know who that girl was?" Mr. J asked next.
Arvin was silent for a moment, then nodded, "Miss Angel is Alvaro's ex-girlfriend."
Mr. J furrowed his brow, "You mean Alvaro's woman before his wife?"
"Yes, Mr. J. Miss Angel is known as a homewrecker in this company. She has always tried to seduce Mr. Alvaro into returning to her."
"Homewrecker..."
Mr. J’s face hardened at once, his gaze sharp.
"What's up, Mr. J?" asked Arvin upon seeing the CEO's change in expression.

A dejected Renata walked slowly, looking utterly shocked. How could she not be after encountering a man who bore a striking resemblance to her beloved husband?
Actually, Renata had wanted to embrace the man and pour out her longing. But she realized that man was not her husband.
Mr. J was a different person, perhaps a side character not written into her life's novel. It was not surprising to encounter someone resembling someone from her past since Angel's face also resembled her previous appearance.
But, Renata couldn’t bear to face someone who looked so much like her husband. She feared she might not be able to control her emotions.
"My phone fell in his office," Renata mumbled dejectedly; she thought to let it go, especially since it was already broken.
"I really need to resign from this company quickly."
At all costs, Renata had to stay away from Mr. J and Alvaro, the two Tjong brothers. Worse yet, they were siblings. And yet, they bore no resemblance to each other at all.
Of course, her Jefra was the most handsome.
Renata shook her head swiftly. Trying to remind herself that Mr. J was not her Jefra.
Lost in her thoughts, Renata didn’t notice a man exiting a room in front of her.
Thud
Renata’s perfect forehead collided with the solid chest behind a white shirt.
"Ouch," Renata moaned while holding her forehead, then looked up at the person in front of her.
"..."
Renata just stared silently at the man whose appearance instantly brought down her mood.
Why did she have to bump into Alvaro, of all people? Just what she needed to compound her problems!
