Episode 8

Chapter 7

Aurora

WHAT A SHAME! How is it possible that I found myself in such a situation? I'm not a prude woman, I've had my little flings here and there with a few boys, nothing important though. But I don't go around flaunting myself like nothing, especially not in front of a man as devilishly handsome as him. I swear on my life that I will never neglect to lock the door again, at least not when I'm in such a state. I can't believe I couldn't react, but in the presence of such a specimen, it was impossible for me.

As I was thinking about a plethora of stupid things, all related to that man, I quickly got dressed. I put on my black pants, a t-shirt from one of my favorite bands that was two sizes too big to hide that I wasn't wearing a bra, and an open hoodie.

I followed him silently from behind after he said his sister was waiting for us. We walked to the main house.

When we finally arrived, we entered the dining room. The girls were there, along with Rocio. There were also three other men and a woman who didn't seem very friendly. She looked me up and down with a haughty expression.

"Good evening," I said, greeting everyone. "Allow me to introduce myself, I'm Rocio's assistant. I come from Santiago and will be working with her in the garden."

"These are Lucas and Manuel," Rocio said, pointing at two of the men. "They work with Oliver, who was the one who came to get you. He's my older brother," she added with a wink.

"And this is Leandro," she pointed at the man standing in front of her, who couldn't seem to take his eyes off her. "And this is Loreto, his sister. They're here visiting while they do business and will be staying in one of the cabins."

"Oliver, I thought I wouldn't see you again tonight," the so-called Loreto said in a shrill tone.

"Don't worry, I had a few things to take care of, and then my sister asked me to go get her... assistant. That's why I took a bit longer, but here I am," he replied to her, not taking his eyes off me. I could feel my cheeks burning.

Lilly and Lucy looked tired, yet they still stole glances at the two friends of the boss. We began to eat while engaging in pleasant conversation with the four men present. Rocio mentioned that Lucas and Manu had lived there with them since they were born, practically like brothers. They grew up together and were now Oliver's right-hand men. They asked me and the girls about our jobs.

"So, Aurora, you're coming to work as an assistant in Rocio's garden?" Loreto sneered disdainfully. "I heard that your job pays very little, how can a young person like you settle for such a mediocre job and low salary?"

"Well, yes, the pay isn't great, but you're mistaken about it being a mediocre job. Educating is actually very challenging, and the Teacher, who can't do everything she does without us Assistants, it's not easy to deal with young children, let alone their parents. Working in education is one of the noblest jobs there is, but to understand that, one must be empathetic, which many people are not. Many of these children have needs that we Assistants and Educators strive to fulfill. So, no, it's not a mediocre job," I responded, getting annoyed. I could feel Oliver's eyes on me as I gave my speech about my job, which annoyed Loreto even more.

"I agree with you," Rocio said, "educating children is a very difficult task, and in my experience, we cannot do the job completely without an assistant. Some of these children spend most of their time alone because their parents or guardians have to work hard to feed them. But the good thing about this school is that the guardians work here and have enough time for their little ones. But each of these children is a world of its own."

We continued eating and talking until it was 11 o'clock at night. Loreto kept shooting daggers at me with her eyes, perhaps thinking that her biting words would make me lesser, but no one supported her in what she said, especially not her brother, who had been enchantedly watching Rocio the whole evening while she did the same with him.

Cai Cai Vilu and Tren-Tren Vilu Legend.

"It is said that the creation of the Chiloe archipelago"

"It is said that in ancient times, there were two powerful spirits embodied in gigantic serpents: one was Cai Cai (spirit of the waters), who stirred the sea and hated humans, and the other was Tren-Tren (spirit of the Earth), who lived on the summit of a hill and had affection for humans. One day, Cai Cai decided to destroy all living beings by causing the waters of the sea to overflow with its strong tail."

"Tren-Tren, who saw from the heights how the disaster began, took pity on humans and urged them to flee with the animals to the mountains in order to save themselves. That is why he elevated the mountains, while Cai Cai did the same with the sea level."

"Most of the animals managed to save themselves. However, some men were slower because they did not want to leave their lands or desired to take all their belongings with them. Others did not even believe that a flood would occur."

"But it did happen, and the waters began to rise, sweeping away everything. Finally, and thanks to Treg-treg, a small group of men reached the summit, who, it is said, are the ancestors of the Mapuches."

"Some versions of this legend say that they were also punished: they had to sacrifice one of their children by throwing them into the sea. In this way, the fury of Cai Cai was appeased, and the waters slowly receded to their original margins."
