Bruno glanced at the rearview mirror a few times, wanting to make sure they were not being followed. The awkward silence was bothering Carlos "So, how long have you been working for Alberto? He seems to trust you a lot," Carlos said, hoping to break the silence. Bruno smiled without looking at Carlos.
"Yes, since I was a teenager, I was taken in by your father after my family was killed. He gave me the chance to seek revenge, and in return, I swore loyalty to him and his children."
"Children? Does Alberto have siblings?"
"Yes, two. He is the oldest, his brother studies abroad, and his sister is a stylist. He tries to keep his siblings out of all this."
"Hmm, so you two get along well, since you grew up together and swore loyalty."
"Yes, I have always respected him and never touched what was his."
Carlos furrowed his brow but continued "Does that include your boyfriends? Isn't he jealous of you?" Carlos immediately regretted asking the question as soon as it left his mouth.
Bruno smiled "Maybe he would be, since he is quite possessive, but he knows I don't like men. I believe that makes him feel more secure, so to speak."
Carlos nodded in understanding. The silence returned until they reached Carlos's house. Bruno asked him to wait for a moment in the car, and Carlos complied, watching Bruno talk to one of the men in his garden. Bruno signaled for him to come down.
Carlos entered the house and noticed that everything was very well organized, with no signs of a fight or the spilled wine. Carlos looked at Bruno, who explained "Alberto had everything cleaned up after we took care of those two." Carlos nodded in agreement and saw his phone on the side table, still with some battery left, but the screen cracked from the fall.
There were numerous missed calls and messages, from Alberto, Nina, and even Lucas. Carlos saw Lucas's name and took a deep breath. He looked at his messages as he headed to his room to gather his things. He replied to the work messages first and then moved onto the personal ones. Nina had sent messages asking how he was doing, and she shared some gossip about one of the secretaries and a nurse. Carlos smiled and shook his head.
Lucas had also sent messages "How are you? You didn't answer my calls. I hope you're okay and I hope you're considering what I told you. Please, respond. I miss you." Carlos sat down on the bed and sighed as he read this. He didn't have time for this right now. He opened the wardrobe and grabbed a suitcase, packing everything he might need.
He checked his phone again and saw a message from the hospital director that he hadn't opened yet. Carlos furrowed his brows as he read the message "What do you mean, a leave of absence?" He muttered to himself.
The message stated that he had received a medical leave request, with an psychiatric certificate citing post-traumatic stress disorder and all the necessary documentation. Carlos began typing a response to question the director but stopped before sending it. He knew it would be strange to say that he hadn't sent anything, but he knew exactly who to question - Alberto.
Carlos stormed out of his room, turned to Bruno, and said "Your friend can be such an idiot sometimes." Bruno just gave a smirk.
"I agree, and Carlos, you look really cute when you're mad. I might end up changing my preference." Carlos was speechless, couldn't believe what he had just heard. He sniffed and walked away, pulling his suitcase behind him.
Bruno stood there, still smiling at the teasing he had just done to Carlos. He followed after him, calling out his name, but Carlos quickened his pace and ignored him "Carlos, Carlos, don't ignore me. I was just being honest." Carlos continued to ignore him, and Bruno couldn't help but smile. Carlos opened the small gate and froze when he saw who was outside. Bruno stopped behind him, now looking serious and observing.
"Lucas, what are you doing here?" Carlos said, completely surprised. Lucas approached him and hugged him, catching Carlos off guard. Bruno raised both eyebrows, witnessing the audacity of this guy hugging Carlos.
"You wouldn't answer your phone or respond to messages, and I heard about your leave, so I came to see what was going on," Lucas let go of him, but still holding his hand, Bruno narrowed his eyes in Lucas's direction.
"What is really going on? Since when do you hang out with security? Is someone threatening you?" Lucas bombarded him with questions and Bruno couldn't take it anymore.
"The security guards are his boyfriend's orders, and I don't think that's any of your business, who are you anyway?" Bruno gave Lucas a stern look. Carlos glanced at Bruno, who shrugged. Lucas didn't want to be left behind and countered.
"I may be his ex, but I still love him and I care about him," Lucas made a point to say this, not looking at Bruno but at Carlos. Carlos swallowed hard and looked down, Bruno intervened again, pulled Carlos's arm causing Lucas to let go of his hand, and held his arm making Carlos look at him again.
"We need to go now," Carlos snapped back to reality, seeing Bruno's stern look, he looked at Lucas again and spoke.
"Lucas, we'll talk about what you told me later, but this is not the right time, I'll look for you when I'm better, sorry," Carlos said, walking towards the car.
Bruno walked past Lucas, giving him an intimidating look, Lucas stood there, watching Carlos get into his car, and the other guy who was driving. He frowned, speaking to himself - something is going on with him, and I will find out.
Ever since he got into the car, Carlos hadn't said a word. Bruno noticed that he seemed a little sad and tried to break the ice "Are you okay? Do you want to talk?" Carlos shook his head. "Is that your ex?" as if he didn't already know.
Carlos nodded. "Do you still have feelings for him?" Bruno continued asking, not wanting to see him just nodding, wanting him to speak, not keep it to himself.
"I don't know, everything is really confusing right now, if you had asked me this a few days ago, the answer would have been yes, but a lot has changed after that incident, changed in my life, and my feelings too."
Bruno listened to everything and questioned "The change in feelings, has it to do with Alberto, right?" Carlos looked at him uncomfortably.
"I'm not sure, I won't deny that he affects me a lot, but I don't know if it was just him, the whole situation made me see that maybe we weren't compatible from the beginning and I just didn't want to see it..."
Bruno now looked at the rearview mirror more often, but still wanted to keep Carlos's attention, "Why exactly did you break up?" Carlos started telling him from the beginning what had happened, Bruno made some noises indicating that he was paying attention, but his eyes remained on the rearview mirrors.
Carlos was talking about his relationship with Lucas, and stopped for a moment, "Wait, why are you speeding?" Only then did Carlos realize that Bruno had increased the speed, Bruno glanced at him and said seriously, "Hold on tight, there's a car following us since we left Alberto's house, it's getting closer, I need to try to shake them off." Carlos looked back and saw a black van, then turned back and held on wherever he could, feeling his breath quickening.
Bruno maneuvered through the cars on the road, trying to shake off the car behind, in the van that was following, a man leaned out and fired twice, Bruno screamed for Carlos to duck. He accelerated even more, saw the intersection ahead and the signal was about to turn red, he gave it everything he had and crossed the intersection, the signal turned green and the van collided with another car and stopped. Bruno saw that they were no longer being followed and slowed down.
Carlos sat up and was as pale as a ghost, "Carlos, are you okay? Were you hit?"
Carlos couldn't even blink properly, he just nodded and gestured for Bruno to pull over, Bruno looked in the mirror again and stopped the car "What's wrong?" Carlos just opened the car door and vomited.
Bruno didn't know what to do and could only pass his hand on Carlos' back, as if comforting him. Carlos returned to his position, now almost green, and looked at Bruno, speaking with panting breath, "Let's go or you're going to end up killing me." Bruno raised his eyebrows as if he didn't understand what he meant, after all, he had just saved his life, again.
