There have always been two worlds, ours and there's. The human world and the Yokai Realm. Despite popular belief, the Yokai Realm housed peaceful creatures, but there were also those who were violent.
The worst of the worst, ones who were feared within both worlds. Creatures like Yamata no Orochi and Tamamo-no-Mae, the two most powerful of the creatures from the Yokai world.
After a fault line between our world and there's opened in Aokigahara 1000, Yamata no Orochi, Tamamo-no-Mae and an assortment of terrible creatures entered our world. Despite best efforts, they continued to reign terror, until the final stand.
Tamamo-no-Mae was first, ambushed by a group of brave Samurai. She corrupted one, and slaughter the rest, however her powers were weakened and she was soon trapped in Sesshō-seki. Whilst the corrupted Samurai disappeared.
Next was Yamata no Orochi. A group of one hundred Samurai attacked the creature in Aokigahara. It swollowed half of them and crushed half of what was left. All seemed lost, until one brave soul gave his own life, jumping down the beasts throat and tearing it open from the inside, finally killing Yamata no Orochi.
The body of Yamata no Orochi remained in Aokigahara, getting buried slowly. Despite its death, the fault line remained open, releasing cursed energy into the forest. The energy preserved Yamata no Orochi's body, but it slowly decayed, whilst the Samurai's Katana remained impaled in the creatures gut.
