After I finally calmed down, I realized that as long as I insisted on not signing the divorce papers, Mollie and Jeremy would have a hard time conning my money. If Mollie really wanted to bring the incident to court and forced me to pay for her losses, then the money would have to come from both the husband and the wife instead of solely from my account. There was no reason for me to be afraid of Jeremy's threat.
When I realized that, the worries inside of me melted away.
My mother-in-law came in the afternoon to pack some of her items. She said she was going to take care of Mollie at the hospital. As I watched her prepare a huge serving of chicken soup for Mollie, all I could feel was a sense of irony.
Sometimes, a person needed to jump out of the situation they were in to clearly see what was truly happening.
That saying was true when my relationship with Jeremy fell apart. My mother-in-law used to say she would take great care of me as if I was her real daughter. Yet, even after my miscarriage, she never once took care of me.
The only reason she was doing all she could to take care of Mollie was that she realized her son really liked Mollie.
After my mother-in-law had left, I dragged my suitcase out of the house with me.
Even though I had to call off the divorce for the moment, I did not want to stay with that man or woman any longer. They could still have something up their sleeves to bring me down and I wouldn't want to give them the chance.
After getting myself a room at a nearby hotel, I fell asleep as soon as I hit the bed.
Once the sun had set, I got a call from Jeremy asking if I had made my decision or not.
"Got lost, you motherf**ker!" I yelled into the phone. "No way in hell am I signing that paper!"
That was my first time cursing at someone and it was clear from Jeremy's silence that he was shocked. When he recovered from the shock and was about to yell back, I hung up the call.
I thought to myself that there were times where using a crude method solves a problem much easier than being nice. At the very least, I felt good after getting the frustration off my chest.
The next morning, I tidied myself up and headed back to work.
As soon as I got to the office, my colleague, Julia Hawkins, was giving out wedding invitations to everyone.
When she noticed me coming, she handed me one as well and asked, "Hey, April, I think I saw Jeremy taking another woman to a gynecologist yesterday?"
Her tone sounded as if she found the situation interesting and wanted to gossip about it.
"Oh? That's his relative."
I quickly thought of an excuse as I was the type of person who never liked to share her personal life with my colleagues. In the end, we were all just coworkers and even if I shared my situation with them, they would end up laughing or joking about it.
Seeing that I was reluctant to give out any more information, Julia smiled and said, "Here, this is my wedding invitation. My fiance proposed to me not long ago and we are hosting our wedding next week."
Hearing what Julia said, a few other colleagues walked over to us. "April, you don't look so well. Shouldn't you rest more?" one colleague suggested.
"She's right. You don't have to rush back to work if you are still feeling under the weather..." Another chimed in agreement.
Even though it might sound like they were worried about me, I clearly understood what they were trying to do.
A few days before that, the Solstitial Group announced that they had a new product that needed an advertising agency to help promote it. The agency that I worked at was eyeing the contract.
My higher-ups even promised that they would promote the person who landed the contract with the Solstitial Group to a department manager.
As soon as that promise was made, everyone rubbed their palms and was ready to give their best.
That was also the main reason I returned back to work so quickly.
As I was absent for a few weeks, I immediately ordered my assistant to give me information about our rival companies.
I quickly realized that the Breeze Sail Company was on the list as well.
That was the company that Jeremy and his partner started a few years back.
