I put my phone down and sat on the bed. All the while, I stared at our wedding photo hung on the wall without any expression on my face.
Both of us had our best smiles in the photo, illustrating how happy we were at that time. It was as if we thought that our sweet relationship would never end.
However, all that was left of that relationship was an endless amount of pain.
I had no idea how much time had passed since then. I heard someone open the door and it did not take long before Jeremy stormed into the bedroom.
He looked at me and said, "The baby's gone. Are you happy now?"
I knew that Jeremy had already convinced himself that I was the cause of it. Even if I tried to argue, he would never have believed me.
It was like the saying goes — if one had someone else's trust, they would not even need to utter a word for the other party to believe them. However, the opposite holds true as well. If you did not have someone's trust, everything you say would fall on deaf ears.
I grabbed the divorce papers that I prepared and was about to hand them to Jeremy. However, he did not take it and said, "Throw that away. I had my lawyer make another one."
He took out new divorce papers from his bag and handed them to me.
Just reading the first few lines of the agreement had me boiling with rage.
I never thought that Jeremy would expect me to hand all of my assets to him.
"What the heck is this? Even if we are getting a divorce, we should divide all of our assets equally! Why should I give you everything?" I glared at him angrily.
However, he returned my glare with a sharper one. "What? Do you expect me to give you something after you killed my baby?"
At that moment, I was utterly disgusted by how shameless Jeremy could be to come up with such a conclusion.
The thought of the baby that I lost and my inability to conceive a child because of him only made me even angrier.
"What about you then? You killed our baby and even made me into someone who can never get pregnant again! Did you forget about this?" I yelled and paused. "Also, I wasn't the one who caused Mollie's miscarriage. I did not push her!"
Even if we were to divorce, there was just no way that I would carry the sin of causing someone to lose their child.
The incident was completely out of my expectation. At first, I was planning to make Jeremy surrender all of his assets. Yet, instead of that happening, Jeremy and Mollie managed to draw up and execute their plan faster than I could.
It was then that I realized — everything that had happened that day was an orchestrated trap they plotted against me so that they could have all of my money.
I had to admit that it was a great plan.
Jeremy did not show any signs of urgency in the matter. His eyes never left me as he threatened, "No, you're the perpetrator. I'm sure of that. If you don't want the police to show up here, then you better sign the papers."
"I'm the perpetrator? Don't you dare threaten me with that! I still haven't sued you for cheating on me!" My body was starting to tremble because of the anger.
I could not believe that the man who was trying to get rid of me was the man that I once shared a bed with.
"Well, if you refuse to sign the paper, then I'll have no choice but to bring this to court."
Jeremy left a warning and turned to leave.
I sat on the bed and stared at the divorce paper, only to realise that my life was pretty much a joke up at this point.
I was shocked that even when going through a divorce, the husband that I used to love would plot to seize my assets.
It reminded me of something my friend once told me, that a woman could only see whether the man she married was a gentleman or a bastard during the divorce.
I finally understood that. I never really got to know the real Jeremy. It was only during the divorce that I realized how ruthless he could be.
As I was lost in thought, I suddenly realized something.
The reason Jeremy could make such a demand was that he was sure that I had no evidence to prove my innocence. However, I had set up cameras in the living room a few days ago and the recordings might just benefit me.
I hurriedly opened my computer and located the video of that morning.
However, after viewing the recordings from two different angles, I could not find anything that could help me.
As Mollie had her back towards both of the cameras, it seemed as if I was the one who pushed her when she fell. Mollie's timing was absolutely perfect. Not only did the recordings not prove my innocence, but they might even be taken as proof that I was the one who pushed Mollie.
