I ignored my mother-in-law's anger and my mother's hesitation. After making sure they understood my decision, I stormed back to the bedroom.
I thought that once they learned about my inability to conceive a child again, my mother-in-law would force me to divorce Jeremy. What I did not expect was for them to think of such a disgusting plan.
They even shamelessly said that it was all for my own good while stabbing me in the back.
I was fine with divorcing Jeremy, but I would never accept having a child that was not mine.
When Jeremy wanted to enter the bedroom at night, he realized the door was locked from the inside. He sent me a message saying, "April Hadley! Do you think you're the only one who feels wronged here? What about Mollie, huh? She even agreed to give birth to a baby for you. Do you think she wants to be part of this mess?"
When I saw the message, the last shred of emotion that I had left inside of me was gone.
To Jeremy, Mollie was the weak one, the victim, while I was the jealous and selfish wife.
He sympathized with Mollie for being able to step down and make such a huge sacrifice, but he never spared a thought about my feelings.
It was at that moment that I realized — my marriage and feelings that I insisted on keeping were nothing more than a joke.
After a night of thinking it through, I finally decided to divorce Jeremy. However, I had to wait until my mother left before bringing it up.
I wasn't afraid of Jeremy and my mother-in-law, but I was reluctant to bring it up in front of my mother because she was an unreasonable person.
Even since I was a child, whenever I went against her decision, she would grab her chest tightly and either yell at me for not being a filial child or complain that she was about to have a heart attack.
She would either cry, yell, or even threaten to hang herself. That was what she has been doing since she was a teenager.
What I never imagined was that before my mother could even leave, Mollie was already moving into my house.
Jeremy was helping Mollie carry her suitcases while smiling sheepishly at me. He tried to explain, "Mollie has nowhere to live. She'll be staying here for a while..."
My mother-in-law carefully studied my mother's and my expression before putting up an act as if she was angry. "If she doesn't have a place to stay, then go find a hotel or an apartment outside for her! What do you think you are doing by bringing her back?"
Mollie's expression changed when she heard that. She lowered her head and rubbed her belly. "I-I have no choice. I'm pregnant now and no one wants to take care of me..."
Before she could even finish her sentence, the chopsticks and bowl fell from my hand to the floor.
My mother could only gently tap my hand to calm me down. As for my mother-in-law, she did not even bother to care for me any longer.
She quickly ran up to Mollie and helped the lady to the couch. "Is that true?" she turned to ask her son.
Jeremy nodded as Mollie added, "I was pregnant a month ago. The doctor says that I'm still in an unstable state, so..."
"I see. I see. Don't worry. You can stay here. I'll take good care of you." My mother-in-law smiled.
If I had not known better, I would have thought that they were a pair of mother and daughter.
My mother's expression was as sour as it could ever get. She glared at my mother-in-law and said, "Isn't this a little inappropriate?"
It was only then my mother-in-law remembered that we were still there.
She turned around and said, "April, this will be your child in the future. The baby will be your future, no?"
I gripped my fists tightly. It took me a lot of effort to suppress my anger when I saw the smugness on Mollie's face.
In the end, I forced a smile and said, "You're right. The child will be mine in the end. But, there's no use for her after that, right? She'll have to leave as soon as the baby is born."
As soon as I said that, Mollie's expression darkened.
My mother was on my side this time. "She's right. We can keep the child, but there can only be one mother."
"O-of course." My mother-in-law smiled awkwardly.
Because of the sudden turn of events, I lost my appetite for breakfast.
Ever since I learned that Jeremy had cheated on me, I started losing weight at an extremely unhealthy pace.
It has only been half a month since I found out, but my clothes were already too big for me.
If Mollie was already a month into her pregnancy, then it could only mean that Jeremy had been cheating on me for even longer than I thought.
I could not help but find the situation ironic. I used to treat Mollie like a good friend and all four of us would even dine together from time to time.
Could it be that when we were dining together, Mollie was already laughing at me and Kevin for being idiots?
It was clear why Jeremy suddenly suggested having someone else give birth to our baby. It was because he had already learned of Mollie's pregnancy.
After my mother cleaned up the broken bowl, she came into my room to comfort me.
I sat there silently as she kept talking about how this was good for me.
"Now that you can't get pregnant anymore, you can only look for a husband who already has a child if you divorce Jeremy now. Do you think being a stepmother is easy?"
"So? I should just stay quiet about everything?"
"Well, just think of it as Jeremy having a short-term lover. He never once brought up divorce. It means that you're still important to him. Once the baby is born, we can just give the woman some money and she'll leave. Your life with Jeremy would go back to what it once was."
I could not suppress my anger any longer at that point. I turned to my mother and said, "Mom, are you still living in the past or what? A lover at this age? Are you kidding me? Even if Jeremy could endure the humiliation when people learn about it, there's no way in hell I want to be by his side when that happens! Mom, I'm divorcing him no matter what. But, I will make sure they suffer."
