It's been 15 days since I had my exam and it still hasn't arrived, I think about calling the clinic but I end up forgetting. Later that same day I receive a very strange call from the clinic, which scares me a lot. They ask me to go to the clinic immediately, making me anxious.
Do I have cancer? Am I going to d!e? I can only think of stupid things at this moment! My sister is going with me to the clinic.
Today at work we both got the night shift, so she can accompany me.
Upon arriving at the clinic, we go to the reception, I give my name and show my documents.
Then they take me and my sister to a room, when I enter the room I come face to face with some people.
A woman immediately comes towards me, with a worried face.
"Good morning! Are you Helena?" the woman asks, I nod yes.
At this moment my heart wants to jump out of my mouth.
"Could you sit down for a bit." she says with a voice so sweet it seems like it will melt.
"Of course!" I answer without thinking too much.
I sit in the chair and look at my sister, I realize she is as scared as I am.
"My name is Maria, I'm a psychologist! I was called to talk to you for a bit." Just from these few words she says, I'm sure I'm going to d!e! I'm already thinking about what my funeral will be like.
"A few days ago you came to this clinic for some exams, right?"
"Yes, you're right!" I feel my hand tremble.
She looks at me attentively, noticing my anxiety. If you're not feeling well we can stop she says worriedly.
"I'm fine! You can continue!" I'm clearly not fine.
"Alright!" she replies and continues to speak. "On that day, the doctor on duty confused you with another patient and performed an artificial insemination on you." She stops and observes my reaction.
But I have none, like?! It takes me a few seconds to process and then I realize this woman is crazy.
Like?! What the f@ck is happening! What kind of sick prank is this.
My sister, who is next to me, unlike me who shows no reaction, reacts explosiv@ly! She's more shocked than I am.
"What the hell are you talking about?" Ana asks, already agitated.
"I know it's confusing! But I'll explain everything to you." the psychologist says, trying to calm my sister down.
But Ana didn't calm down at all, I've never heard her scream so much before. If I wasn't in a state of shock, I would be surprised at how my sensible and calm sister freaked out.
Ever since the psychologist finished speaking, I've been paralyzed in the chair, without reaction, trying to process what is happening.
Ana comes to me and hugs me. Helena, are you okay? she asks, already crying!
I'm the one who's screwed and she's the one crying. I am! I say.
(No! I'm not)
"How did this happen?" I ask.
The psychologist tries to explain it to me, but to summarize: the doctor and her friend stole sperm from the doctor's friend's boyfriend to perform an insemination behind his and the hospital's back. Yes, it's confusing! I didn't quite understand it either.
I was stunned, in disbelief! Is this happening to me? It feels like I'm in a movie!
"So I'm pregnant?" I ask in disbelief!
"We don't know! You need to take a pregnancy test. But there's a low chance of you getting pregnant!" the psychologist tries to explain.
"My God! I can't be pregnant! I've never even had sex. How am I going to give birth to a child?" I say, getting agitated! It seemed like I was finally starting to understand the gravity of the situation.
My breathing becomes heavy and I feel my heart race. Ana I call my sister, crying.
"Calm down! You need to calm down!" the psychologist tries to make me sit back in the chair. "I know this is surreal, but you need to stay calm. The police are here, they want to talk to you! But only if you can talk to them, if you can't, that's okay too."
"No! I can't!" I say, crying a lot. Damn, I can't even breathe, how am I going to talk to police in this situation.
"Are they arrested?" my sister asks. "Are the doctor and her friend arrested?"
"I don't have that information!" the psychologist replies.
"I want to go home" I say, getting up, my whole body trembles and I feel like I'm going to faint.
"You need to do the exams" a doctor tries to stop me. "To confirm the pregnancy."
"No, I'm going home." I rush out of the room, my sister right behind me.
The doctors try to convince me to stay and try to resolve things, but I can't! This is all too much for me.
