They Are Getting Married (2)

I racked my brain but could not figure it out, so I simply stopped thinking about it. In fact, most of the time I liked to live a muddleheaded life, because the truth might mean pain, and one could lose what they got. There would be no pain if one did not know the truth, and one would lose nothing if they got nothing.

...

The next day in the company, after the weekly meeting at the planning department, Jason and I walked out of the meeting room side by side. Behind us was another colleague, Zack Hacket.

I lit a cigarette and waved to Zack. "Zack, come here."

Zack put up his guard. "What is it?"

"I heard that you like outdoor sports, right?"

"Yes, I do!"

I smiled. "I have a set of professional outdoor equipment. I haven't used it much since I bought it. I'll sell it to you at a good price."

"You don't like outdoor sports, so why did you buy outdoor equipment?" Zack asked doubtfully.

"I don't like it, so I haven't used it. It looks brand new and awesome! It's a famous brand. You're lucky. I'll sell it to you for 300 dollars," I put my arm around Zack's shoulder and said.

"Really?" Zack was surprised and delighted.

I said impatiently, "Of course. Hurry up and give me the money. I will ask Jason to bring it to you tomorrow. It's at his place."

Zack took out 300 dollars from his wallet and handed it to me. "Remember to bring it to me tomorrow. It just so happens that I can use it for rock climbing next weekend."

I stuffed the money into my pocket and said, "You can talk to Jason yourself."

Zack turned to Jason, who had been absent-minded the whole time. "Jason, remember to bring me the outdoor equipment Howard keeps at your place tomorrow."

Jason came back to his senses and asked in confusion, "What outdoor equipment?"

"Howard's outdoor equipment. He sold it to me," Zack explained patiently.

I took a drag on my cigarette and immediately walked to the bathroom. Behind me, Jason cursed, "What the hell? That's mine!"

Jason helplessly said to Zack, "Alright, don't be sad. I'll bring it to you tomorrow."

...

After I finished smoking in the bathroom, I returned to my office. Jason had a cup of coffee on his desk. He was typing on the keyboard with his anti-radiation glasses on.

I turned on my computer and fiddled with the lighter in my hand while waiting for the machine to boot. I spoke to Jason, "Are you still working on the project plan of COSI, the luxury brand that distributes clothing and accessories, setting up a showcase in our mall?"

Jason did not bring up what happened just now and sighed. "Yes, I have been busy for almost a week. The Liaison Department has been waiting for the project plan to negotiate with the representative of COSI!"

I responded and did not ask more questions. Jason and I were different. He was a workaholic while I just let everything be. Different work attitudes led to different results. After working for two years, Jason was promoted to the head of the planning department, while I was still at the bottom of the ladder.

Jason suddenly stopped typing and stared at me for a long time with a serious look.

"What's wrong?" I asked, puzzled by Jason's strange actions.

Jason finally said, "Two days ago, you seemed to be in a bad mood, so I didn't tell you... Isabel and I are going to get married next week."

"Finally!" I sighed subconsciously, and then my heart broke.

At that time, Jason got to know Isabel Malet because of me and Jane. Isabel was Jane's best friend, and Jason and I were close. After Jane and I dated, I provided Jason and Isabel an opportunity to get to know each other, and then they fell in love with each other.

In the past few years of college, the four of us often stayed together and established a deeper friendship. We joked many times that we would get married after graduation.

Sometimes, witnessing others living a good life meant pain for me... But at this time, other than blessing Jason and Isabel in pain and loneliness, what else could I do?

I smiled at Jason and said, "Where's your wedding invitation? Hurry up and give it to me."

Jason nodded and took out the wedding invitation from the drawer and handed it to me. I opened it and saw a photo in which Jason and Isabel were smiling to their heart's content.

...

After a long silence, I turned to Jason and asked, "Will Jane come back to attend your wedding?"

"You know, we have been off contact since she moved to another city. A few days ago, Isabel sent her an email but she didn't reply. No one knows if she will come back."

"OK," I responded calmly and said nothing more to Jason. My fingers were on the keyboard, but I was looking at the screen in a daze.
