Only You (1)

Holding an umbrella, I left my place where I had lived for the last two years. I felt bad. My proposal to live with that woman was no joke. I wasn't taking advantage of her, either. At that moment, I felt like a homeless child. I was kicked out of the warmth I was used to, yet no one could tell my desire to cry out.

However, people needed to face reality, didn't they? Larry sold the place, and I had to leave.

I found an ATM and withdrew 200 dollars as agreed. I then checked the user's name. That was when I found out the name of that gorgeous woman: Emilie Hale.

I liked her name. It was beautiful, as beautiful as her life. Yet my life was broken. It was a total mess. It seemed that hunger and gloom were the only two things left in my life. It was such an irony for a man like me to meet a woman like Emilie. I had no future.

...

I lived in a hotel at the corner of the street. It rained all night. I didn't fall asleep until the morning. When I finally woke up, it was already noon.

I checked my phone, only to find a dozen missed calls. They were all from Penny. She was more stubborn than I thought. She also texted me since I didn't pick up her calls. The text went, "I should have delivered the baby as a lifelong punishment to you."

Funny. Since she didn't mind being an unmarried mom, what made her think being an irresponsible dad could punish me? Penny's complaint was no burden to me at all.

I washed up and then rushed to the hospital. I didn't know why I even bothered to go. Perhaps because of my mercy on a woman or sympathy for a friend with benefits. I couldn't pinpoint the reason. Sometimes, people didn't know themselves.

I got out of the cab at the maternity and infant hospital. Then I saw Penny under an umbrella at the gate.

Penny found me at once. When Penny saw me, she looked less insecure. Penny walked over to me.

I was full of anger, yet I managed to hold it. After all, she once lied in the hospital, facing the scalpel in an operating room.

Penny held my arm with a stern face. She then looked at her belly with pity as if she loved me so much yet I didn't even give her a damn.

I got rid of her. "You bitch! Tell me who the hell knocked you up?"

"You, Howard!"

"Tell me the truth or I'm gonna strangle you!" I stared at Penny.

"You monster! Go ahead then! If you had strangled me yesterday, you would have made the cover today. Everyone would know that you are such a monster!" Penny said with her eyes squinted, yet she got closer to me.

"Seriously? I haven't slept with you for two months. When did you get pregnant? Show me the report."

Penny ignored my doubts, yet she softened her tone. While holding my arm, Penny said, "Howard, if I hadn't done the abortion, you would be a father. How happy you would be then!"

Trying to hold my anger, I pushed her away. "Stop joking around, OK? Get that damn examination done. When we get out, I'll be dead to you and don't ever bother me anymore!"

Penny paused for a while and then said, "I will leave you alone. Please don't use the D-word."
