The apartment where dad and Laura live has only two floors and their only neighbors are a quiet couple: I will have plenty of time to relax if the children stay quiet.
The house is quite large and welcoming, painted in warm colors and full of beautiful plants, which I have only recently discovered with extreme surprise to be fake. Laura greets us warmly and takes us to the guest room, where Cinzia and I leave our luggage.
"Laura looks nice, she has a beautiful smile!" Cinzia says to me, placing the bags on the bed, while I sank into it. "What are you doing lying already on the bed?" she starts being capricious.
"Leave me alone, I have already endured vomiting and the babies screaming in my ears."
Cinzia decides to ignore me by tickling me, I cannot fight back: we start a non-stop battle until we hear a knock on the door.
"I am coming!" I open the door, Laura smiles at me with a nice plate on which there are two slices of chocolate cake.
"I hope I haven't interrupted anything... I thought you were hungry after the train ride and I brought you a piece of cake!"
I fix my hair. "We were ..." wait, something is wrong: "Hey, what do you mean? I would never do something with her even if she were the last living thing on the planet and I were addicted to stimulants to the point of bursting! What are you thinking? No! Absolutely! I've been supporting the LGBT + community for a lifetime but I'm not part of it!"
Oh, my... she misuderstood.
"I don't like implications Laura, I'm sorry." I sat back puffing.
"Well, what's wrong with that, I'm open-minded too!" she laughs and sits next to me: I've tried to tell her everything over the years, but I've never seen her get angry. What a holy woman. She then begins to whisper to us confidentially: "To tell you the truth, when I was fifteen I had a relationships with Carla, my classmate."
I look in amazement at her: "You're lying!"
"We broke up after a year..." she makes a funny face and a gesture with her hand trying to chase away that teenage memory.
I wonder if dad knows.
"What are you talking about?" Dad asks us in front of the door with a toy car in his hand.
"We were talking about how good the cake was!" Cinzia reply with difficulty because of her full cheeks.
"Did you eat all the cake?!" I scream at her, she answers me smiling like an idiot.
“I'm doing it for your sake, since you got sick on the train!"
Ah, she stole my cake... I wanted to save it for later.
"Didn't you feel well?" Fever?" Laura puts her hand on my forehead.
"I don't have the flu!"
Dad approaches me with a serious face: "Your mother called me saying that you had a furious argument and that you were coming to stay here for a few days to reflect, she said you were so busy with your problems that you failed the exam. Could it be that... that thing?" I see him waving his hands in front of his belly.
"Oh, god!" I'm getting really nervous. “Can you give my poor sexual sphere some privacy?" I snort hysterically.
My father walks away from the room with his hands up.
"Honey, I think that's the problem." Cinzia tells me with a pat on my shoulder, while I lighten her with a look "Your situation is bad, as you say. You need to find a boyfriend. "
"Isn't there any guy you like?" When I was a little girl I had a crush every week! " Laura and Cinzia exchange a nod of understanding.
"No! No and I don't want to look for one! I'm fine by myself! "
The two look at me sadly and with pity.
I don't need their pity, I know very well that I deserve to be alone all my life because of my bad temper, that some things never happen by chance and that I'm a total idiot.
I don't deserve the things I experienced in the past, but there is something wrong with me and I don't want to suffer anymore... so I'm staying on my own.
As for the role of sour spinster, I'm already wonderfully conforming to it.
I wipe away my tears and go to the bathroom to wash my face, ending the conversation.
