Lilac Skies

Lilac Skies

1

Mondays are the worst; especially when you oversleep and have to find a way to somehow make it through the morning without a cup of freshly brewed coffee. But even worse than that, is when all of this happens on your first day at a new school, when you have to impress your teachers and the principal with your good qualities.

Unluckily, that's what my first day at Silver Valley High looked like. At the same time my Mom dropped my kid brothers Noah and Ethan off at elementary school and kindergarten, I was trying to put on two socks at the same time (spoiler: it doesn't work). Rushing through my room, I put all of the books I could find into my backpack, not caring about whether I took textbooks or novels.

As I jumped down the staircase, I pulled the zippers of the black Jansport in my hands. Downstairs I strived on a black leather jacked as I slipped into my default Converse before walking through the door leaving the house to rush over to the bus station.

For a moment I stopped. The chilly spring air filled my lungs and I took a deep breath to inhale the floral scents around me. For a split second I forgot about the rush I was in, but soon enough reality hit me again like a rock and I started to jog down the road to catch the only bus that takes me to school.

Right before the doors were closing, I jumped into the vehicle. I sat down in the back of the bus, fixing my skirt while pulling out my headphones to put on some energizing rock music tunes. "If I can't have my coffee in the morning, I have to wake up my brain with something else" I thought.

Today was the first day after spring break and my first day at Brine Springs, a small town located somewhere near Traymont. After I arrived there yesterday, the only thing I did was unpack my baggage before catching up on sleep. Well, maybe I slept a bit too well last night.

I got off the bus and walked a few more hundred meters, reaching the school gate about five minutes before class started. With quick steps, I came closer and closer to the big building in front of me. Walking through the archway, I entered the school.

For a few minutes, I tried to find the principals office, but only ended up going in circles. To my liking, a big library was right in front of me when I gave up on looking for the principal.

As I walked into the peaceful environment, I could smell the books. I looked around and found a women side-eyeing me, but she clearly didn't seem to be bothered by my presence or the fact that I was actually missing class right now.

Amazed by the greatness of this schools library, I walked past the huge bookshelves filled with everything a reader could deam of. Timeless classics, modern novels, cooking books, travel guides. They had it all.

I looked around at the astronomy section as my eyes met another pair. She was standing on the other side of the shelf, clearly following me with her brown hazel colored eyes. It took me a seconds until I averted my eyes from her. She had something in her eyes, something like magic. Without noticing, I peeked through the books again, noticing her looking at a book and not at me.

"Hey" a soft voice said. The girl behind the shelf starred into my eyes again and I was noticeable panicking. Assuring myself that there was no one else she could possibly be talking to, I turned back and gave her a subtle smile.

"Hi" I mumbled. Before I could say anything else, she took lead in this conversation and asked "How come I've never seen you here before?"

"Oh I'm just", I responded, "I'm just new here." "Your first day and you're already ditching class? Respect" The girl walked forward, towards the end of the bookshelf, pushing one of those book trolleys.

"Oh no I'm not- I'm not ditching class. Well, at least not on purpose. You know, I couldn't find the principals office and I didn't know where else to go so I thought I could, you know, spend some time here until I find someone who can tell me where Mr. Kline's debating class is?" My voice went up high in the end, making the last bit sound like a question she might be able to answer.

"Mr. Kline?", she asked surprised. "I'm supposed to be there too" A little smile crept onto her lips.

"Seriously? Why are you skipping class?" I'm pretty sure I sounded too curious, maybe even rude, but the girl didn't percieve it that way. "Debating class is just...not my thing I guess. Ms. Chesterfield, our librarian, is letting me stay here until French class stars."

"Sounds pretty...nice of her." I hadn't noticed we already reached the end of the shelf, but there we were now, standing right on front of each other. She reached me her hand and said "I'm Claire by the way"

"I'm Audreanna", I introduced myself to Claire, "but Audrey will be just fine." She shook my hand before pulling it back to scratch her neck.

"Hey, I just finished putting back the books that were on this trolley so I got nothing else to do until French class starts. Would you like me to show you around a bit. Mr. Kline will unnecessarily make things complicated if we join him this late"

"Sure, why not" Agreeing on her offer, I walked towards the exit with her.

"And this over there", Claire said, pointing to the cube at the end of the school yard, "this is our very own café. It's basically a public café, but since it's on the school campus, it's accessibe for all students, too. We can have lunch there today. Of course only if you want to sit with me and my friends." The exitement in her voice was hard to miss as she showed me around. I nodded my head in order to show her that I love the idea of sitting with her during lunch break.

"Good, I'll tell the others." Within a second she jumped off of the table tennis table we sat down on after she finished showing me the inside of the school building - including the principals office - and the school yard.

While Claire walked back to the entrance of the building, I sat there breathing in the fresh air; just like this morning. It felt good to look up in the sky and let all of your worries go. Even if it's just for a second.

As Claire started yelling at me to finally get up to go to French class, I snapped back to reality and noticed that the time we had was all spent now. I quickly got up and ran up to her, trying to catch up so I wouldn't also miss the third class.

-

The bells rang and the students were rushing to their lockers after fighting their way through the crowded hallways. After Claire and I arrived in French class, all I did was write my thoughts down into my notebook so I might be able to concentrate, but the more I wrote down, the more thoughts were coming and my head felt like it would expode anytime soon. I was glad that I could finally get some coffee now before heading to the apparently strictest teachers biology class.

As I made my way thorugh the hallways, trying not to puke since all of these teenagers around me clearly do not know what deodorant and a proper shower are, a kind-looking student with glasses handed me a flyer that said Attention! School Band audition today at 2 p.m. - 4 p.m.! All you need is your instrument and your voice!

For a moment I seriously considered going there after school, but as soon as the sweaty and even more smelly football player came from P.E. class walked out of the changing room, I threw away the consideration and tried my best to get out of this hell on earth as fast as I could to get the coffee I had been dreaming about this whole morning.

With the paperwork I borrowed from the guy next to me in French class (I think his name was Landon...?) in my hands, I hurried up to not be the last one in the queue behind a bunch of other kids.

Finally being near the entrance of the little café, I could already smell the slightly caramalized, somehow nutty and fruity scent of the coffee beans. I couldn't wait any longer, so I quickly put the notes into my textbook, as I suddenly ran into someone who spiled all of their freshly bewed, still hot, coffee on me over me. My wet-soaked t-shirt made my skin feel like it's being burnt. The sudden heat made me jump back and drop my stuff on the ground.

Before I could even proceed what just happened, I heard how the person in front of me let out a "Oh shit, I didn't see you there." Out of frustration, I couldn't but respond with an annoyed and nasty comment. "Well maybe you should open your yes then, idiot"

At the same time, the guy in ront of me bent down to help me pick up me stuff. "I'm sorry" he apologized. "I really didn't mean to get coffee on your t-shirt-" he paused and looked at the disaster once again before adding "- which looks just like mine." And now I realized it too. We were both wearing the exact same t-shirt; the only differnce was that it looked good on me and ridiculously silly on him. To be pertly once again, I responded with a simply but true "Well not anymore" to show him that he basically ruined my brand new band tee of approximately one week.

"Look, I'm really sorry. I-I really didn't see you there and I-" before he could finish his further apology, I cut him off. "It's alright" I said, realizing that there was no real reason behind my rude behaviour before. "It's just...coffee"

He gave me back the notes he had collected while I was rubbing my t-shirt. For a few seconds we just stood there, looking into each others eyes. You could see how sorry he was and that he mant every single word he said, even though the I didn't see you excuse pretty dubious was.

The second I wanted to walk away, he took the floor. "Listen", he said loudly to make me stay, "I know this sounds weird but...since we are wearing the same t-shirt I was thinking...maybe we could, you know, exchange them...? Obviously only so you don't have to wear this coffee soaked thing for the rest of the day" He looked at me, almost begging me to say yes so he could ease his conscience.

"I'm fine. I can just zip up my jacket." I turned around to walk up to Claire and her friend who was waving at me. "Well but a zipped up leather jacket doesn't actually look good, does it?"

Once again I turned around to look him in the eyes. I thought about it for a second before asking him "What will you wear?" He smiled and repeated me by saying "I'm fine. I can just zip up my jacket"

Once again I looked over to Claire and her friend at the table that stood in the shadow of a big tree. Then I looked back at the guy in front of me who was impatiently waiting for something that didn't sound like a rejection. "Fine" I finally told him.

A big smile spread on his lips as he said "Sweet. I'm Luke." "Audrey" I responded, making an quick introduction before heading to the café's restroom with him.
