As the week progressed, Arya became increasingly accustomed to her new role, always striving to perform at her best. May was beginning to leave everything up to her, knowing that she had held the same position in her previous job in Europe. It was nearly identical; only a few demands from her new boss differed from those of the former.
"My dear, from what I see, I might retire sooner than I expected, all thanks to you. Your work is impeccable; I have almost nothing to teach you," May chuckled, sipping her coffee at her desk.
"That's good; then you can rest more," Arya responded, joining in the laughter.
"The best part is that I don't have to deal with that ill-mannered boy. I feel my mood has improved a hundredfold; even my wrinkles have lessened," May said, still chuckling.
"His yelling scares me, that's for sure. I can never tell when he's in a good mood," Arya mused as she organized some documents.
"Well\, my dear\, I'm off to lunch; it's about time\, and I don't plan to come back today. Kilan's schedule is here\, and the agenda password on the laptop is ****. Can I trust you to handle everything?" May inquired as she handed over the items.
"Do I have a choice?" Alya countered with a question.
"You know you don't," May replied as she left, blowing her a kiss.
Once May left, Arya went to Kilam's office to deliver the folders he had asked to be organized. She knocked, and he instructed her to enter.
"Mr. Pagano, here are the folders, all sorted by date as you requested. Also, Mr. Muniz called asking you to reply to the email he sent the week before last about the budget increase for the Seattle building project," Arya reported, while Kilam observed her.
"I had completely forgotten about Muniz. I'll do that now, and order my lunch, too; I can't get out to eat," he said, opening his email.
"Yes, sir. Anything else?" she queried, and he shook his head in negation.
When she left his office, she bumped into a young man who apologized and entered Kilam's office. She returned to her desk and ordered his lunch, then informed reception to let her know when the delivery arrived. She made her way to the small kitchen at the end of the hallway and heated her food, returning to her desk shortly after finishing her meal. The phone rang, and the receptionist notified her of the delivery man's arrival. She instructed him to come up, paid for the meal, and arranged it on a tray in the kitchen. Knocking on the door, her boss's sharp voice granted her entry.
"Excuse me, Mr. Pagano, your lunch," she announced, placing the tray on a small table in the corner of the vast office.
"Ms. Lewis, do not forget I have a dinner tonight at 9 PM," he stated seriously without so much as glancing at her.
"Of course, sir. The restaurant reservation you asked for has been made, and your suit will arrive from the laundry at 6 PM. Anything else, sir?" she politely inquired while noticing the man from the office glaring at her brazenly, making her uncomfortable.
"Remember that you'll have to accompany me to this dinner; I need you to carry the documents and the blueprints so we can sign the contract for the new hospital," he ordered, starting his meal.
"Yes, sir, the documents and the blueprints are prepared. Is there anything else?" she asked, eager to leave the room due to the discomfort caused by the man's stares, and Kilam simply shook his head, savoring his meal. She quickly exited.
The man who had been sitting and staring at Arya stood up, faced his friend, poured himself a glass of juice from a carafe, and downed it in one gulp, laughing maliciously at Kilam.
"My friend, your new assistant is indeed beautiful. I wouldn't be able to maintain all your composure when speaking with her," he remarked, throwing his head back and running his fingers through his golden hair.
"Richard, behave yourself. She's not just another one of your conquests. Be aware she has children and is likely married," Kilam sternly cautioned him.
"What a pity, a woman like that being taken. But nothing stops me from trying, right?" he said, his tone mocking.
"She's my employee, and I insist that you respect her. Stop staring at her as you did; you were making her uncomfortable. If you continue, I will forbid your entry here," Kilam warned, his dark eyes growing even darker with anger.
Arya called her mother to ask her to look after the children until she returned from the dinner with her boss. She was told to grab the kids and would be picked up shortly afterward. Her mother agreed, and they hung up after saying goodbye.
The afternoon dragged on; Arya was drafting some documents when a woman stopped in front of her desk and belligerently demanded her attention.
"Who are you? And where is that old woman May?" she asked, her tone sharp.
"First of all, good afternoon, miss. How may I assist you?" Arya calmly replied.
"I bet that lazy so-and-so didn't tell you that Kilam has a fiancee, did she?" the woman asked, increasingly furious.
"Miss Lisa, correct? I'll let Mr. Pagano know you're here," Arya calmly stated as she picked up the phone.
"I don't need to be announced, and don't think you'll seduce my man with your innocent face because I won't allow it," the woman spat out before storming away before Arya could respond.
