Yuan-hue sniffed the air, his eyes widening in delight. "Guys, do you smell that? It's incredible! Like someone's cooking a feast nearby."
.....
As night fell, the group huddled together, discussing their next move. Yuan-hue interjected, his voice laced with concern, "You know, I can still smell that awfully sweet smell. It's driving me crazy!"
Hu-li's breath caught, and he shuddered. Zheng-tai immediately moved closer, her hand on his forehead. "Hu-li, your temperature is soaring! You have a fever, a pretty bad one."
As Zheng-tai tended to Hu-li, she caught a whiff of the scent Yuan-hue had mentioned earlier. Her eyes narrowed, sensing something was off. She-ying, too, noticed the smell later, her brow furrowed in concern.
"Guys, I think we have a problem," Zheng-tai said, her voice low and urgent. "This scent... it's not natural. And Hu-li's fever... I think it's connected."
Yuan-hue's eyes widened, realization dawning. "You think it's some kind of poison? Or a trap?"
Zheng-tai nodded, her gaze scanning their surroundings. "We need to be careful. Let's get Hu-li settled and try to figure out what's going on."
As they tended to Hu-li, the sweet scent grew stronger, enveloping them in an eerie, unsettling aroma.
Hu-li's voice trembled, his words barely audible. "It's... not... I... I'm in heat."
The trio fell silent, trying to process Hu-li's words. She-ying's voice was laced with confusion, "Heat? Like...?"
Hu-li groaned, his body contorting as he arched his back. His half-fox form erupted, sweat dripping from his brow, his eyes unfocused. The trio knew what he meant, but they seemed lost, unsure how to handle the situation.
Yuan-hue and She-ying stuttered, trying to find words. Yuan-hue quickly excused himself, "You named him, you take care of him!" before hurrying away with she-ying on his tail, leaving Zheng-tai alone with Hu-li.
Zheng-tai's face was a mix of concern and confusion. She had mocked similar scenarios in fiction, but now that she was living it, she felt helpless. Hu-li's eyes locked onto hers, pleading for understanding, for relief. Zheng-tai's hands hovered, unsure where to touch, how to comfort him.
"Hu-li, I... I don't know what to do," Zheng-tai admitted, her voice barely above a whisper.
Hu-li's gaze didn't waver, his body still tense, his voice a strained whisper, "Please... Zheng-tai... help me..."
Zheng-tai moved closer, cradling Hu-li's face in her hands. His skin was wet with tears, and her touch sent shivers down his spine. Hu-li trembled, his body sensitive to Zheng-tai's cool touch, which was topped with her refreshing alcoholic scent.
As Zheng-tai's fingers traced the edges of his ears, Hu-li gasped, his body quivering slightly. Zheng-tai's embrace enveloped him, pulling him close as she realized his temperature was still rising.
"Hu-li, I'm here," Zheng-tai whispered, her voice soothing. "I don't know what's happening, but I'll help you through it."
Hu-li's face buried into Zheng-tai's shoulder, his tears soaking into her clothing. His body shook, his half-fox form trembling with each ragged breath. Zheng-tai held him tight, her hands stroking his back, trying to calm him down.
