During the reign of Emperor Krishnadevaraya, there there was a cruel moneylender called Chandran. 2 he was rich and lived a comfortable life, Chandra was still greedy for more. when he lent money he always made sure to charge the peasants a very high rate of interest. But do poor people sometimes had no choice but to borrow from him as he was the only one who could give them large sums of money. Chandran was also a landlord, and did rent out his cattle, carts, utensils and anything else that he could make money out of.
news of Chandran's extortion reached Raman's ears. it was Raman's server Yogayya who alerted hymn of the pitiable condition of many of the peasants. Raman decided he would do something to help you and others like him he asked Yogayya to borrow 6 brass vessels from Chandran . Raman gave him the money and assured him that he would take care of it.
when it was time to return the vessels Raman gave Yogayya 6 smaller brass vessels of the same make and asked him to return those to Chandran as well. Yogayya went back and returned the 6 vessels with 6 more to Chandran's was surprised. ' what are these vessels for?' he asked.
' Oh sir, when you give me the 6 vessels you forgot to mention that they were pregnant. they gave birth at my home one night I am only returning them to you' Yogayya said, repeating exactly what Raman had told him.
Chandran almost laughed upon hearing it. This man had to be a fool. 'oh yes, that's true. I forgot . thank you for returning them.' he said taking the 12 vessels from Yogayya. Chandran had a good laugh about the incident , happy that he had gotten 6 more vessels for free just because of a peasant's stupidity.
After a few weeks, Raman sent Yogayya again to Chandran. this time he asked you to borrow 6 gold and silver vessels each. Chandan usually didn't rent out his gold or silverware to the peasants afraid that they would run away with it. but Yogayya seemed like a simpleton to him, a foal even and Chandran thought he might be able to use the opportunity to his advantage. 'I shouldn't be giving you these vessels since they are all pregnant and need to be used with care. but you are an honest man and I trust you. just like a last time, you must return my vessels and their children to me.'
Yogayya nodded and took the vessels from him. he went straight to Raman's house and handed them over to him. Raman asked a goldsmith to break all the vessels into smaller pieces and then distributed the pieces to the peasants who had been subjected to chandran's greed.
meanwhile, Chandran was writing with pleasant thoughts of the Fortune that would soon be his. he waited eagerly for the day when Yogayya was supposed to return his vessel but the day came and went without any signs of Yogayya. The next day Chandran call for your guy who came weeping.
'I come wearing sad news' Yogayya cried. ' the vessels all died the day before while giving birth to the children. the children also did not survive, How could they without their mothers? I am sorry for your loss. '
Chandran went blind with rage. 'what nonsense! how can a non living thing die? do you take me for a fool ?you stole my vessels! '
the argument that followed brought The Emperor's Guards to settle the dispute. Chandran insisted on seeing the emperor and having Yogayya thrown in prison for cheating him. the Guards who already knew of Raman's plan agreed to take Chandran and Yogayya to the emperor. when they arrived in front of the emperor, Raman was already at Court.
'Your highness, I have been robbed! this man borrowed 6 gold vessels and 6 silver vessels from Me 2 weeks ago and he refuses to return them. he says my vessels have died! ' Chandran wailed. ' how can a non living object die? he must take me for a fool.'
Raman intervened and said, 'Sire, Yogayya borrowed the vessels for me. last time it was six brass vessels and they gave birth to 6 other vessels. We returned all the 12 vessels to this man who readily took them. if his vessels can give birth, why can't they die?'
The emperor had to stop himself from smiling. he had been hearing reports of Chandran's cruelty and was going to confront the moneylender himself but Raman had beaten him to it.
'Come now, Chandran, if you can answer Raman's question with logic then I shall take your case,. otherwise, I am afraid you have to accept the fact that your vessels have all died just like you accepted that they had given birth. '
Seeing no way out of it, Chandran withdrew his complaint and went away with the realisation that if he hadn't been so greedy he wouldn't have been caught in such a situation.
Yogayya thanked Raman and the emperor congratulated him for his clever plan.
