Raman and the Magician's Challenge.

Many renowned people visited the City of Vijayanagaram and paid their respects to Emperor Krishnadevaraya. the emperor was known for holding interesting discussion and acknowledging talent at his Court, there were not many days that went by without his hosting some genius or the other. most who came also left with a reward or either gold coins or precious stones.

Once, a famous magician arrived at Vijayanagaram. he was greeted with much fanfare in the city and held performances across the city for three days straight. On the last day, the magician was invited to perform at court in front of the emperor and his courtiers.

the magician had saved his best tricks for the Emperor's Court. the audience watched in as he turned the pebbles into emeralds, pulled out dove from his turban, and vanished in front of their own eyes only to a right at the foot of the emperor's Throne.

when the magician pulled out a sword, the crowd grew visibly tense. the guard standing by the emperor immediately became more alert. but the magician surprised them all by cutting off his own head! The shock only lasted a second because the head of the magician floated from the floor towards his body and found its place on his neck again.

The Emperor was generous with his praise. ' Never have I seen anything so amazing in my entire life! You truly are the best magician to ever perform in this court. ' he handed the magician a bag heavy with gold coins. the courtiers too were effusive in their praise.

It was the first time the magician was performing at a court and quite unfortunately all the compliments went to his head. The overconfident magician decided to raise a challenge. ' if anyone can perform a trick that I can't, I will give them my reward from the emperor!'

Everyone knew the bag had more than 1000 gold coins but nobody thought they could rise to the challenge.

'What?' the magician cried, pretending to look shocked. ' no one? not one person from the court of Emperor Krishnadevaraya is even going to try? sure we you do great discredit to your Emperor!' the magician shook his head as though in disappointment.

The Emperor who looked troubled and his courtiers could see that. but how would they challenge the magician knowing full well that they would lose?

'will you really give up your reward if I win the challenge?' a voice asked.

The magician found the speaker amongst the other courtiers. A short , simple looking man.

'Yes, of course. ' The magician appeared smug. If he has only takes the man his name , perhaps he wouldn't have been so sure of winning the challenge. but little did he know he was up against Tenali Raman who was famous for his wit and wisdom.

Raman stepped forward looking thoughtful. ' I'm not a magician but I do know a few tricks. How about we do this then, I'll perform a particular trick with my eyes closed and if you can do the same trick with your eyes open then you win. if not , you have to accept defeat and apologise for insulting the courtiers.'

the magician shrugged, confident that he would not lose.Raman one of the attendants to bring him something. the boy returned with two bowls, one had water and the other had red chilli powder.Raman closed his eyes and applied some chili powder on his eyelids. He stood Still for a few minutes and then washed it off.Raman turned to the magician with a smile, 'There, that's not too hard, is it? All you have to do is perform this trick with your eyes open. '

the magician spluttered indignantly. He couldn't apply red chilli powder to his eyes! The magician realised he had been tricked and had to admit defeat. he apologized to the emperor and gave Raman his bag of gold coins. Raman had proved yet again to the emperor that he was cleverest of them all.
