Episode 4

“What’s going on?” Katie asked. “You’re shaking the entire apartment.”

“Nick and I talked…”

“Okay.”

“About things…”

“Oh no,” Katie said. She pushed from the couch and walked around the round glass coffee and blocked the television. She pointed at Sarah and felt herself about to lose control. She touched her hair and undid her hair clip, letting her dark brown hair flood over her shoulders.

“Katie, you look freaking sexy with your hair down,” Sarah said.

“Don’t kiss my ***,” Katie said, losing a battle to a smile. “You’re trying to set me up again, aren’t you?”

“Set you up?”

“Yeah, with one of Nick’s friends. Like last time. Remember that trip?”

“Katie, gosh, no,” Sarah said. “This has nothing to do with you. Well, sort of. But, no.” Sarah shook her head, her blonde hair dancing around. “Dammit! Just listen. Nick asked me to marry him.” A pause flooded the room. Katie’s eyes were as wide as Sarah’s.

“And…?” Katie whispered.

“And I said yes,” Sarah said. Her lip quivered and tears filled her eyes. She put her hands out and stared at Katie, waiting for a reaction.

Katie smiled. Of course, she smiled. An engagement. That was a great thing. An amazing thing.

“Oh, Sarah, don’t cry,” Katie said. She rushed to her roommate’s side and wrapped an arm around her. Katie reminded herself that she kept calling Sarah a roommate… she deserved more than that, right? She was a friend. A friend who was now engaged. “I’m so happy for you and Nick. How did he do it?”

Sarah laughed and wiped her eyes. “I’m sorry. It gets me emotional. I’m scared to death about it… but I love Nick. So much. He caught me off guard with it too.”

“Tell me what happened,” Katie said. “Here, let me get you a tissue.”

Katie grabbed a tissue and handed it to Sarah. She blotted her eyes and then nose. She looked at Sarah and her eyes were different. It bothered Katie but she let it go, for now.

“We had dinner and everything was normal. We ended up going for a walk and he casually walked me to West Side Park.”

“Oh, I love that park,” Katie said. “I love the path with the roses…”

“That’s where Nick first kissed me,” Sarah said. “It’s the spot where he took me to tell me he loved me. It’s the spot where we… well…”

“You didn’t.”

Sarah smiled. “Just once.”

“On the ground?”

“Nick put his coat down. It was night. Oh my gosh, Katie, it was such hot sex.”

Katie closed her mouth.

Hot sex? What was hot sex?

The closest thing to hot sex Katie had experienced lately was if she took care of herself in the shower.

“Sorry,” Sarah said. “This isn’t about my sex life. Anyway, we ended up in West Side Park. He took me back to the rose path and it was amazing. He stopped, turned me to him, and we just stared at each other. I smiled. He smiled. Then there was this look in his eyes, like something I’d never seen before. My heart told me he was either going to propose to me or break up with me. He got down on one knee…”

Sarah held her left hand out. It was shaking from retelling the story, or at least that’s what Katie thought.

The diamond was freaking huge.

Of course, it was huge.
