~Sophia’s POV~
Rubbing the last of my ointment, I grumpily threw the container back into the cupboard and shut the door.
I hate that b!tch.
As soon as Demetrius and I got home I ran angrily to our room and slammed the door shut. I've been there ever since.
I refused to allow him access into the room, still too pissed off to face him.
That woman - oh the things I dreamed of telling Demetrius, but I knew I couldn't, that would be heartless of me to destroy the close bond he has with his mother. Anyway, why would he even believe me? I'm just his wife after all. Sarcasm intended.
Yesterday after I refused to allow Demetrius into the room, he felt it wise of him to spend the entire night outside the door waiting for me to open it for him, in the hope that the sympathetic part of me would surface, it never did.
I am not sure whether he is still out there or if he has gone to one of the guest rooms since I can no longer hear his incessant demands for me to open the door.
Turning on my laptop I sat cross-legged and right on cue caller id showed it was Mabel attempting to call me. I quickly answered.
"Hi Mabel." I greeted.
"How are you, Sophia?' She asked going straight through procedure.
"I'm fine, the bruise has healed, so I guess the nightmares have stopped as well." I shrugged, observing her surroundings, it was nothing like her office.
"That's good, any developments in your marriage you would like to tell me about?" She questioned already getting her notebook and pen out.
"Despite, his mother attempting to poison me, nothing much." I muttered adjusting my top when it began to irritate my skin.
"I'm guessing you'd like to tell me about it?" She asked, a small smile on her face.
"That little self-obsessed posh woman, do you know what she did to me?"
I saw Mabel attempt to answer my question but I just kept going.
"She added garlic into the dinner we ate last night - knowing fully well I am highly allergic to the spice - simply to get back at me for marrying her son. To make matters worse my 'knight in shining armor' aka husband decided to force me to eat the contaminated food, even though I begged him not to because I knew exactly what his spiteful mother was capable of." I huffed letting out all my anger to poor Mabel who struggled to keep up as I vented out my frustrations.
“If you don't mind me asking... what are the effects of the allergy?”
I stared at her, confused as to whether she was asking a serious question since it was completely irrelevant to what we were discussing. I told her nevertheless. It's like hell, first I begin to itch uncontrollably, like I'm being smothered by a swarm of fire ants. It doesn't take long before rashes begin to form throughout my body and it hurts even more because I can't stop myself from scratching. Then the churning in my stomach begins and I start to become hot and sweaty all over before I finally vomit, not a one-time spill up, but a spill that could potentially last the whole night.
"I usually just develop rashes and vomit." I answered, not bothering to bore her with the detailed recollection of it all.
She simply nodded.
"Your husband's mother, do you feel her involvement has put a strain your marriage?"
"Most definitely, that woman has a particular bar that she has set for everyone and if you come below it, you might as well pack your bags and leave because you are seen as nothing but dirt on her shoes." I scoffed just thinking about Aria's idiocy, she had the guts to make me feel like gum under her shoe. If my mother was still alive, I have no doubt she would be disappointed in the woman she used to call her best friend.
Of course, Demetrius is completely unaware of this since his mother tends to keep every detail of her past life hidden away from her own son.
Fortunately, my mother felt no need to hide the woman she was and I would always remember the story she used to me about said best friend...
"Please help me, please." I barely heard the timid voice among the raging winds.
"Hello?" I called out, slowly walking into the secluded street and turning on my flashlight, it was times like these that I was glad I carried one with me.
"Over here." The soft voice whispered again. Cautiously tiptoeing to the voice, I gasped when I came face to face with a woman, her devilized state made it difficult to describe her. Though her stunning ocean eyes instantly grabbed my attention.
"Are you okay miss?" I asked worriedly, hesitantly taking a step a step towards her.
"I-I think my leg is broken." She whispered, taking a closer look my eyes widened when I noticed her tear-stained cheeks.
I wasted no time in helping the injured stranger up. "Everything is going to be okay-"
"Aria." She managed a small smile.
"Maria." I greeted, already attempting to move her towards my car.
"The nearest hospital is just ten minutes from here. You will be just fine." I assured her.
"Thank you." She winced, groaning as she experienced - what I could only imagine as an immense amount of pain.
Gently placing her into the car, I quickly rushed to the other side and entered the driver’s seat. "Everything is going to be okay." I whispered encouragingly before starting the car and driving to the hospital.
When I arrived at the hospital Aria was immediately taken to see the doctor who surveyed her leg. I was surprised with the quick service.
Within fifteen minutes the doctor came out with Aria in tow. She was still limping and looked to be in a considerable amount of pain.
Smiling, I shook the doctor’s hand. "Are you a family member?" He asked looking curiously at the two of us.
"Just a friend." I answered.
He simply nodded. "Your friend here seems to have suffered a hairline fracture, its nothing too serious but she will need to rest it for about one month before she can properly use it again." The doctor explained running through the results of her X-ray.
"Thank you very much Doctor Hanson." I shook his hand again, smiling with relief.
"If the bone has not healed by the allocated time or she begins to feel extreme amounts of pain make sure she is immediately taken to the nearest hospital." He instructed.
"Understood, thank you again."
"No problem." He smiled before walking away to attend to his next patient.
Aria and I walked out of the hospital in silence, confused I turned around and looked at her. "Have you not called your parents to come and collect you?" I asked, wondering why she had followed me this far.
I watched even more confused as she suddenly burst into tears. "What's wrong?" I stared awkwardly at Aria, not knowing how to comfort her.
"I don't have anyone." She whispered wiping her flowing tears.
"What do you mean you don't have anyone?"
"I mean I'm alone; I stay anywhere I can find. I ran away from home because my mum decided her new boyfriend was important than her own daughter!" She burst into another round of sobs, this time I didn't need to think twice before wrapping my arms around her cold body.
"You can stay with me if you want?" I offered, thinking I would regret asking a stranger to live with me, strangely I didn't.
She looked up at me wiping her tears. "Really?"
I chuckled. "Yeah, I've been looking for a new roommate anyway."
"Yes, I would like that, thank you."
"You're welcome." I smiled. Opening the car door, I got inside and she did the same.
“How old are you anyway Aria?” I asked curiously, since we were going to be living with each other, I might as well get to know her.
"Eighteen, you?"
"Me too." I laughed.
"I never did ask; how did you get the hairline fracture?"
"Oh...that." I saw her cheeks turn crimson and I became even more interested. "I ran and tripped."
"Why we're you running?" I pressed.
"I-I stole a slice of pizza from the nearby takeaway."
I couldn't help it as I burst into a fit of laughter, Aria joined in soon after and we continued to laugh until our stomachs ached.
"Sophia are you okay?" Mabel asked with concern, staring at me through the laptop screen.
"Yes, I'm fine." I smiled shaking my head to rid myself of the memory. This story was one of the few my mother would tell me with a smile on her face when she spent her last days on earth, so I made it my mission to hear it as many times as possible.
"I asked you a question."
"Oh sorry, I didn't hear, please repeat it."
"I said would you ever consider-"
"Mabel!" I screamed running to the end of the room in fear.
It was him.
"Sophia-" Before she could ask what's wrong, her body automatically stilled with fright, he was here.
"Miss me princess?" His haunting voice sent an unpleasant chill down my spine. I watched in horror at the steel metal he had pressed against Mabel's skin.
"Please don't hurt her." I pleaded with the cynical man in front of me.
"Why?" He laughed bitterly. "Your husband had no problem with that, the last time we met back at the Caribbean." His sinister smirk immediately turned into a snarl. Taking a closer look, I could see that his wounds had healed though he remained scarred and I didn't doubt they would remain for a very long time.
"Help me." Mabel sobbed silently, her body shook with fear as she stared at me desperately, begging me to do something, but I couldn't, I was helpless.
"Let her go." I ordered bravely, stepping a little closer to laptop, even though I knew he couldn't get me, it made no contribution to lessen my fear.
Roughly pulling away his hood, I gasped, almost falling to the floor as I saw the real extent of his injuries. Demetrius showed no mercy that was for sure. The gashes and bruises that decorated his skin made me feel sick.
Swallowing all the anxiety bottling up inside of me I spoke. "Please, I am begging you, let her ago, she has nothing to do with this."
"What about your husband? Did he let me go? Did he show mercy? No, so don't you even think about making orders!" I flinched at his harsh tone.
"This is how we are going to do it, no nicer guy. I want you to meet me at the Night-howls club, in 2 days." He ordered grabbing Mabel by her hair and pulling. "Come alone. No bullsh!t, no excuses." I rapidly nodded, showing he had my full cooperation.
"I'll be there, I promise."
"Good." He twiddled the sharp edge of the knife around his fingers and I carefully watched him. "Because if you don't..." I covered my mouth to muffle my scream of horror as he slit Mabel's throat, killing her instantly.
"Oh my God." I cried, falling to my knees as he carelessly threw her limp body onto the floor.
Sitting on the chair she had once sat in, he held up the bloodied knife and ran his finger across it, smirking devilishly. "It will be your blood on my hands."
I only managed a nodded, words seemed foreign to me at that moment.
"Her death is courtesy of your husband, be sure to thank him for me. Have a nice day princess." Waving, he cut the call.
I made no attempt to eradicate my tears, it was the only thing preventing me from going completely numb. Mabel was dead. He had killed her. I witnessed every single bit of it, and I couldn't tell anyone. A life, taken away because of my husband's jealousy.
It was not fair. Life was not fair.
Slamming my fists onto the ground below, I sobbed like I had never done before, screaming at the world, asking why it had to be me, why I had to suffer for somebody else's actions.
"Sophia!" I heard Demetrius' voice shout from behind the door. I stood up, my legs shaking and I watched. Waiting for him to do exactly what I knew he would.
It didn't take long before the door was completely ripped from its hinges and Demetrius ran into the room.
Letting another round of tears escape, he immediately enveloped me in arms whispering words of comfort and constantly asking for the reason to my tears.
I stood rigid, unmoving and unresponsive because right there and then, I wished nothing more than for Demetrius' hands to detach themselves from my body.
His touch made me just as guilty as him.
