~Sophia’s POV~
"Sophia hurry up!" Demetrius shouted from the bottom of the stairs.
"I'm coming!" I shouted back fixing the last of my makeup before running downstairs. "Ready?" He asked sarcastically. "Yes." I nodded, not noticing he was trying to be sarcastic.
"Good, now let’s go." He held out his arm for me to take and with a shy smile I slowly wrapped my hand around his elbow.
Before we left the house, I took a brief look at myself in the mirror. My gown for the night was a lavender dress that reached just above my knee, I guess meeting such important people changed Demetrius' mind on my strict dress code. I lifted the sweetheart neckline slightly, so I was no longer showing as much cleavage.
"Better." He commented behind me as he stared down unashamedly at my bust.
"Do you mind?" I asked, my voice high pitched.
"Nope." He popped the 'p' and without warning, held both my br3asts in his hand and gently squeezed.
"Demetrius!" I gasped in shock, immediately removing his hands from my br3asts, my face burning red with embarrassment.
"Come on my blushing bride, we need to go or we'll be late." He said while laughing. Having no hair to hide my face behind since I had decided to tie it up in a high bun, I simply walked past Demetrius and jumped into the car, literally.
"The sheer size of this house never fails to surprise me." I looked up in awe at the beautiful house, it was huge, bigger than any house I had ever seen, well except from the one Demetrius and I live in.
"Yeah, yeah, big house, big everything, great, let's go." He answered sarcastically and pushed me when I refused to move.
"What is up with all the sarcastic remarks today?" I observed, finally deciding to question his unusual behavior.
"It's my parents, my mother to be precise, you've met her before Sophia you know what she's like."
"Boy, don't I know it." I muttered dryly.
"What was that?"
"Nothing." Demetrius gave me a weird stare before shaking his head and continuously looking at his watch.
"Look Demetrius there is nothing to worry about, we are ten minutes early, we have more than enough time to walk five steps." I placed my hands above his in order to prevent him from constantly looking at the damn thing.
"Everything is going to be just fine, trust me." I whispered giving him a reassuring kiss on his jaw.
Suddenly I felt his hands tighten around my arm. "Demetrius, are you okay?" I worriedly touched his cheek, checking for a fever.
"Don't." He held my hand firmly away from his face.
"Why not?"
"Because if you don't... we'll have bigger problems than my parents." I scrunched my eyebrows in confusion before following his line of gaze.
Instantly stepping back, I looked at Demetrius in shock. "I didn't even do anything!" I sighed exasperated.
"You don't have to, just looking at your face wakes up my other-half." He answered smugly, not a hint of embarrassment at his choice of words.
"I have no words." I shook my head at my idiotic husband and knocked on the large wooden door that easily towered above me. With my hands wrapped securely around Demetrius' arm I casually look down at the 'welcome' mat on the floor and scoffed. Bullsh!t I tell you.
Bullsh!t.
"Demetrius, my baby boy!" I heard the loudest shriek and almost jumped at the sound of it. I looked up and felt the sudden urge to glare. It was her.
"Mother." Demetrius beamed embracing the woman in a tight hug while I stood awkwardly behind him.
"Come in, come in." She put her arms around Demetrius' waist and ushered him inside over enthusiastically, deliberately acting as if I didn't exist.
"Mother, have you seen Sophia?" He asked looking around the room for any sign of my presence.
"Right here." I tapped his back and spoke for the first time.
"There you are! You're so small I didn't even notice you were here." She laughed humorously pulling me - might I add roughly - towards her.
Powerless I had no choice but to wrap my arms around her twig h!ps, as I hugged her I wanted nothing than to increase my hold on her body like a python.
"How are you deary?" She smiled showing off her thousand-euro teeth whitening.
"We're fine." I smiled back grabbing hold of Demetrius' hand and kissing the gold ring I had given him on our wedding day.
"That's just...great." She muttered through gritted teeth, her disapproval of our marriage was crystal clear yet Demetrius refused to view his mother as anything but saint, so making him see reason was pointless.
"Is that my son I hear?" A deep voice sounded through the large room we stood in.
"Father." Demetrius smiled, leaving me to greet his father, Xavier Mavros, the same man that grew Mavros Inc. to be the most successful and rich company it is today.
"How are you?" He asked happily, I stared envious at the exchange between father and son, it was evident of the strong bond and love between the two.
"We're good dad." He let go of his dad still smiling, these were the rare times I had the opportunity to see Demetrius without his possessive and violent side. I guess you could say, they were his good aspects. His family.
"Ah, Sophia, my son's beautiful wife, how are you?" He held my hand and gently placed a kiss on the back of it.
"I'm fine Sir." I smiled at the old man in front of me and couldn't help but compare him to my own father.
"Demetrius treating you well?" He asked, sending a teasing glance his son's way.
"I assure you Mr. Mavros he is treating me very well." I laughed watching as Demetrius glared playfully at his father.
"How many times must I tell you to call me dad. You're family now Sophia." He chuckled while I could feel his wife glaring holes at the back of my head. I know exactly why; she was the one who warned me never to call her husband dad. She felt that 'outsiders' should address the higher class with respect. Back then I cried my eyes out at her hurtful words, but now, now I am a woman made of steel, she'll need to try a lot harder if she is going to turn me into the blubbering mess, it was six months ago.
"Okay, dad." I answered, inwardly smirking, knowing I had angered her.
"What are we still doing here?" Xavier clapped cheerfully, the bright smile on his face never disappearing. "Let us go to the kitchen and eat!"
"Aria is everything prepared?" Xavier turned to his wife, who stared innocently at her husband, only I knew what was behind the façade.
"Yes, my love, everything is ready, I just need to set the plates and cutlery out on the table."
"Sophia will help." Demetrius suddenly spoke from behind me. Feeling my whole body turn cold I rigidly turned to face him.
"Demetrius-"
"Go." He mouthed to me, leaving no room for argument.
Apprehensively I turned around and reluctantly followed Aria - who didn't seem too pleased with our partnership either.
Silently we entered the kitchen and started sorting out the plates and cutlery we would use for dinner. "We use the expensive China whenever we have guests." She commented behind me and I looked down at the plate I had taken from the cupboard, seemed pretty expensive to me.
"Is this not the expensive China?" I asked curiously looking at the stainless China, it was beautifully designed with intricate patterns.
"Of course not." She laughed at me grabbing a much bigger and expensive looking plate, making the previous plate appear dull compared to this one, it contained a variety of color and complex designs that did not make it seem overdone but simply perfect...and expensive.
"Do you really need to have different plates for different occasions it just seems... wasteful." I chose my words carefully when it came to communicating with Aria, although her words had zero effect on me, I couldn't deny she scared the hell out of me.
"Wasteful? I beg to disagree - actually I demand to disagree, I have every right to buy as many Chinas’ dishware as I please because I know I will use every single one of them, the fact that I use them on different occasions is absolutely none of your business, so if we both want to leave here without arousing suspicion from Demetrius or my husband, I suggest you get out. Now."
Grabbing all of the plates and cutlery I scurried out of the kitchen as fast as my legs could carry me.
I stared down at my food, glaring down at my full plate of moussaka, before Aria had made this dish Demetrius had warned her about my allergy to garlic. Looking at the food now, I don't believe Aria didn't add garlic.
"Sophia." Demetrius stopped his conversation with his father to interrogate me. "Why are you not eating your food?" He whispered.
"I think there is garlic in this dish." I whispered back.
"There can't be, I told mother not to put any garlic before we came." He pushed the plate closer towards me.
"Demetrius, I can't eat this." I pushed the plate away; I know his mother and I know exactly what she's capable of.
"Sophia, it’s my mother we are talking about I am sure she remembered to not put any garlic in."
"Then ask her."
"Fine." He sighed irritated at my refusal to simply eat without fuss.
"Mother, did you remember to not add garlic in the food?"
I saw her briefly glare at me before looking at her son. "I did, Sophia could be thinking of cumin since I used it as a substitute for the garlic." She smiled sweetly at him before going back to her food.
"See, she even confirmed it, now will you eat." He shook his head with a small smile before beginning to eat.
"No." I managed to utter.
I saw Demetrius put down his knife and fork and cast me a look. "What did you say?"
"I-I will not eat it." I stuttered, my hands shook and I quickly hid them under my dress.
"Sophia, I don't have time for this, if this is one your mood swings, you better cut it out now."
"It is not. I just think maybe your mother forgot she added garlic..." I trailed of, fear betraying my ability to say anything more.
"What are you trying to say Sophia?" It was clear to me that he was now angry and it only made me more reluctant to say what I wanted to say next.
"I'm sorry, but I will not eat this food Demetrius, I refuse." The urge to stick my head under the table to avoid his cold stares was almost unbearable.
"Sophia, I don't give a sh!t what you want, my mother said she didn't add garlic, so she didn't add it, so eat. Now." Jumping slightly at his tone I shakily took the fork in my hands and cut a small piece of the moussaka.
"Eat it." He ordered. Closing my eyes, I slowly enclosed the food in my mouth and took small bites before swallowing it.
The reaction was instantaneous, all of a sudden, my skin began to itch like a jar of ants had been poured all over me, it was torture. At first it started on my arms before rapidly spreading throughout my body. "Demetrius-" I couldn't finish my sentence, I left out of my chair and ran into the bathroom, spewing out the little food I had eaten this night.
Vomiting while trying to itch every single part of your body was much harder than I had originally thought. It didn't take long before my hair started to untie as I continuously scratched my scalp.
"Oh darling, are you okay?" I felt my hair being held up as I continued to empty out everything in my stomach into their million-euro toilet. "Get away from me!" I shoved her hands of me, way past caring that she was Demetrius' mother.
"Why the hostility?" Without looking, I knew she was pouting and it only fueled the vomit flying out of my mouth.
"You did this to me." I coughed grabbing a roll of tissue to wipe my mouth.
"Of course, I did, you deserved it, I warned you not to marry my son." She spat.
"But we love each other." I felt my stomach twist as another round of vomit came spewing out of my mouth and into the toilet, by now the itching has subsided but not enough that I could go 3 seconds without scratching myself.
"Love? My son does not love you; he has never loved a woman in his life, other than his own mother."
"If he didn't why would he marry me?" I questioned smugly; I knew she would have no response to that.
"Think about it Sophia, has Demetrius ever told you he loves you?"
That stopped me. It was true, he has never said those three words to me. Ever. Does that mean my love for him is one-sided? All those months we spent together, the vows we made, was it all a lie?
"You see Sophia, at the end of the day, I am only trying to look out for you, so you don't end up heartbroken with the rest of my son's toys."
"Are you implying that I'm Demetrius' toy?" I wiped my face for the last time before standing up and meeting the infuriating woman eye to eye.
"I'm not implying, I'm stating, to be perfectly honest I never thought Demetrius would come home with a toy in the form of a child. You are truly one of his dumbest toys for staying so long with him and don't forget the poorest." She said causally, completely oblivious that every word she said tore a piece of my heart.
Swallowing a lump in my throat I balled my hands into fists and stared her down. "Before you go around saying absolute nonsense about me, I suggest you take a very long look at yourself in the mirror Aria. You may have the latest clothes and the latest jewelry, but don't you ever forget who you once were before all of this because we both know that back then, I at least had a roof over my head." Not sparing her another glance, I pushed past the arrogant woman and ran back to the kitchen.
"I'm leaving." I announced and walked out of the door. Pulling the car door, I kicked it in frustration when I remembered Demetrius had the keys.
Storming away from the house I decided to walk back home, the only flaw in my ingenious plan was that we lived two-hours away, but I didn't let that deter me. Holding my heels in my hands, I started to make the long journey back home.
When walking home I couldn't help but think about what Aria had said. I know I was not the first woman that Demetrius had bedded but I was certainly the first he decided to marry. That had to mean something, right? I had always thought that Demetrius married me because he loved me, even though he has never said it, he has shown to me that he does. Though it is very rare, he still allows me to see me that loving side to him and that gives me all the assurance I need.
"Sophia, wait." I suddenly heard Demetrius' voice boom through the empty streets.
"What?" I bit out, coming to an abrupt halt when he swerved the car to stop in front of me.
"What is wrong with you today? You're not acting like yourself." He came out of the car and wrapped my jacket around me. I must have forgotten it at that devils’ house.
"Maybe because I had to deal with itchy skin and constant vomiting because of a meal you made me eat." I shouted, my voice breaking at the end of my sentence, today has been terrible.
"I told you it had garlic, you didn't believe me, you never believe me!" I cried hugging the coat tighter around my freezing body.
"I'm sorry."
My body automatically froze as he spoke those two words, I had never expected him to say.
"What?" I peered up at his guilt-stricken face and my eyes instantly widened.
"I said it before, don't make me say it again." He muttered, already walking back to the car.
I didn't mention anything about his mother or what had just transpired and as we sat in the car in silence, despite the horrible turn out of this night, I couldn't help the small smile that graced my face.
