In a small village near Varangal there lived a farmer named Tilakratnam. After a long illness his wife died and he became lonely. He had nobody to look after him and his house.
So he appointed a maid servant to do all the household works. Her name was Indumati, she was expert in almost all household work, such as cooking, dusting, washing, etc. The only weak point in her was that she ate lots of food, she used to eat away the food while cooking. Many times Tilakratnam caught her red-handed but each times she denied. One day when Tilakratnam found Indumati eating, he warned her, ''Indumati! I am telling you for last times, stop this habit. Next time if I find you stealing food, then surely you will lose your job.'' Tilakratam warning proved fruitful. She stopped stealing.
One day Tilakratnam brought some nice ripe mangoes from market. He handed over the mangoes to Indumati and said, ''My friend Venkataman is coming for dinner tonight. Cut these mangoes and serve them with food''.
Indumati took the mangoes into the kitchen and began to work. After cooking serval tasty dishes she washed the mangoes and began to cut them. Her mouth began watering. She could not resists herself eating up all mangoes.
In evening Tilakratnam said,''Indumati! Cut the mangoes Venkatraman will be here at any movement.'' Indumati got scared, she was sure of losing her job. Just then she hit upon a plan. She said to Tilakratnam, ''Sir! Please sharpen the big knife, the small one is not good enough to cut mangoes.'' Tilakratam began to sharpen the knife. Indumati began to look out of the window. As soon as she saw Venartraman approaching, she ran out to him and said,'' Sir I think my master is angry with you for some reason. I have heard him grumbling that he will cut your nose. That is why he sharping a knife. Look there he is.''
Venkatraman looked through the window and saw Tilakratraman sharping a knife. He was scared and ran away. After this Indumati went to her master and said ''Master! Your friend has snatched the mangoes from me and is running away.'' Tilakratam looked out of the window. He called out, ''Venkat! Wait. At least give me hallf of the mangoes.'' But his friend running did not stop. So Tilakratnam came back home. He forgot about the mangoes. Indumati was glad. Due to her cleverness she was able to save her.
