Chapter 5

Damon is weakening quickly in the room full of vervain that Stefan put him in. He has also taken Damon’s ring. Stefan plans to allow Damon to ‘die’ and place him in the family crypt until he is ready to release him. He warns his Uncle Zach to stay out of the basement even though Damon is weak.

Elena is upset that she hasn’t talked to Stefan for 3 days. When he shows back up at school he tries to apologize to Elena, but she is obviously upset. He offers to give her some explanations later at The Grill, however, she waits for an hour and he still hasn’t shown up.

Elena finds Vickie in the bathroom brushing her teeth and while waiting for Stefan and The Grill, she talks to Matt about how weird it is that her brother and his sister are hooking up.

Caroline doesn’t remember what happened with Damon. She has huge holes in her memory. She still has the crystal that she found after Damon attacked her. She tells Bonnie that Damon was ‘going’ to give it to her. In the meantime, she continues to act like nothing happened. Caroline asks Stefan where Damon is and he tells her he won’t be coming back.

While Stefan is away, Zach decides to go down to say good-bye to Damon. I’ve been wondering about Zach for quite a while now. From their conversation, it appears that Zach and his family have lived and cared for the home which belongs to the Salvatore’s. Damon attacks Zach through the door and tries to make him open it. Stefan arrives in the nick of time to save him.

While at The Grill, an old man sees Stefan and claims to know him from 50 years ago and that he hasn’t aged a day. Stefan, of course can’t explain to Elena, which only infuriates her further. Later, Elena expresses her feelings in her diary. She knows something is up, but can’t place her finger on it.

vampire-diaries boysJenna and Logan have their date, but before she arrives, Logan is talking with the sheriff. The sheriff has been searching abandoned homes for vampires, but hasn’t found anything yet. She tells Logan to start with Jeremy because the watch is passed down among the men in the family.

Elena is still furious with Stefan for being so elusive and mysterious with her. The mystery doesn’t bug her, it’s the secrets. Jeremy helps him out by getting Elena to come downstairs to eat, where Stefan is cooking her favorite dinner for her. He begins to tell her about Katherine. He tells her about all of the good things, but also says she was impatient, childish and selfish. He says he did some things that he wasn’t proud of, but his biggest regret was not able to make it better before he died. He says he is no longer crippled by her loss. He then goes into a flurry of “all about me” information, bands, tv shows, etc. Elena takes over chopping the garlic and as soon as she touches the knife you know she is going to cut herself. She tries to clean it up but Stefan starts going all vampire and tries to hide it from her. She catches a glimpse of his reflection in the window and is startled.

Vickie found a bottle of Elena’s pain pills and starts to crush them up, not sure why she doesn’t just take them. Jeremy wants to know why they always have to be getting high. She accuses him of trying to ‘be one of those guys that tries to change someone once they are together’. Later, Vickie takes Jeremy to the cemetary where they meet up with several of Vickie’s ‘druggie” friends. She has stolen the pill bottle from Elena’s room. Jeremy is furious because Elena will find out. He calls her friend’s “waste-of-space, small-town lifers”. Vickie takes it personal and tells him to leave.

Damon still seems to have some sort of pull over Caroline. He calls her name and she is somehow drawn to him. The creepy crow shows up a few times which confuses me. I thought Damon was the crow. He continues to use his remaining powers to call Caroline to him. It finally works and she leaves the car wash to raise funds for the athletic department in honor of Mr. Tanner in a kind of trance.

Damon’s power over Caroline finally takes full effect. His power draws Caroline to the basement room where he is being held prisoner. That is where his power seems fade on her. She doesn’t want to let him out of the room, but his power over her is still great. Zach comes and sees her beginning to open the door and tells her to run, taking her place. He is no match for even the power-drained Damon, and Damon snaps his neck as he escapes, chasing after Caroline. She runs from Damon and makes it outside where he cannot follow because his ring is missing.

VDSome weird guy shows up with a crappy car and acts really odd. Bonnie is mad at the way another girl talks to him and then seems to control the hose with her mind. Bonnie seems to have found new powers. In addition to controlling the hose. She is able to make start a fire with her mind and sets the weird guys car on fire. Stefan goes to her, seeming to know what happened. Bonnie is a bit freaked out and runs off.

Elena tries hard to get Stefan to take off his ring, but of course he cannot. She kept going on and on about it! When Caroline leaves to get more towels, Elena takes over and the strange man from The Grill shows up. Elena asks him about Stefan and why he thought he recognized him. The man had stayed at the Salvatore Boarding house. Stefan had been there. Then the uncle of the Salvatore brothers was killed be a wild animal. Not Zach, another uncle named John. Elena confirms with the man that the men he knew were brothers called Stefan and Damon Salvatore. The man says he remembered all of this happening in June of 1953.

Logan is still trying to get Jenna to date him. It is unclear if she actually wants to get back together with Jenna or if he is just using her to get the pocket watch. Elena asks him for a favor, to look up old news reports. Still trying to get in Jenna’s good graces, he sets up Elena with the digital archives where she begins to search for the incident the old man was talking about. She finds the incident in question and much to her surprise, sees Stefan in the old footage.

As it all wraps up, Caroline is upset, lying listless on her bed. Her mother tries to comfort her, asking if it is ‘boy trouble’. Caroline retorts with, “If I was having boy trouble I’d talk to dad. At least he is successfully dating one.” Stefan returns home to find dead birds and a dead uncle Zach. Elena is writing in her diary (surprise). The strange crystal that Caroline took from Damon casts some strange shadow of protection over her. Bonnie finds her grandmother. Logan gets the pocket watch from Jeremy’s room. Vickie goes wandering to the car where she unfortunately meets up with Damon yet again…with the same consequences. Can she survive his bite yet again? Stefan gets out a dagger where Elena rushes in.

Elena ends it all with, “What are you??”
