في قَصرِ أستالين، بَينَ الجُدرانِ المُزَخرَفَةِ بِالنُّقوشِ الذَّهَبِيَّةِ، جَلَسَتِ الأَميرَةُ سيرينا على العَرشِ، تُحِيطُ بِها أَقمِشَةُ المُخمَلِ الأَحمَرِ وكَأنَّها سِتارَةٌ تُخفي حَقيقَةَ هذا العَرشِ. لم تَكُن تَنظُرُ إلى الحُضُورِ الَّذينَ انحَنَوا أَمامَها، بَل إلى النَّافِذَةِ العالِيَةِ، حَيثُ كانَتِ السَّماءُ مُلبَّدَةً بِالغُيُومِ، كَما لَو أَنَّ العَالَمَ بأَسرِهِ يَترَقَّبُ العاصِفَةَ القادِمَةَ .
جَلالَتُكِ، يَجِبُ أَن تُفَكِّري في الزَّواجِ قَريبًا. قالَ أَحَدُ مُستَشارِيها، صَوتُهُ حادٌّ كَحَدِّ السَّيفِ .
رَفَعَت سيرينا عَينَيها، عَينَاهَا لَمَعَتا كَالنَّارِ الَّتي تُحاوِلُ أَن تَحرِقَ قَيدَها. أَتُرِيدُونَ مَلِكًا أَم مَلِكَةً؟

وفِي تِلكَ اللَّحظَةِ، دَخَلَ القَاعَةَ رَجُلٌ لَم يَتَوَقَّع أَحَدٌ وُصُولَهُ. كَانَ يَرتَدِي عَباءَةً سَوداءَ تُغَطِّي جَسَدَهُ، لَكِنَّ حِينَ رَفَعَ رَأسَهُ، لَمَعَت عَينَاهُ بِحِدَّةِ. كَانَ رَعد، الأَميرَ المَنفيَّ، الرَّجُلَ الَّذي قِيلَ إِنَّهُ مَاتَ قَبلَ سَنَوَاتٍ.
حَدَّقَت سيرينا فِيهِ، وقَلبُها يَنبِضُ بِسُرعَةٍ غَريبَةٍ. لم يَكُن خَوفًا، بَل شَيءٌ آخَرُ… شَيءٌ لَم تَفهَمهُ بَعدُ.
