Part 1
ーー The more I love you,
the more I want to devour you.
Then when I have become one with this body,
will this hunger and aching finally be relieved?
The closer I get,
the further away you become.
I can see you at the end of a scorching desert,
as if you were nothing but a faint illusion.
[ Lord Richter ]
ー Yui arrives at the mansion.
Yui
ーー I came here just as they asked of me but this place…It really is the rumored haunted house, isn’t it?
Yui
The people I asked for directions all gave me the same reaction too. There’s no mistaking it, right?
Yui
(My relatives are at this kind of place? Really?)
Yui
(Haa…That being said, it isn’t like my father is the type of person to make such a thing up.) (1)
ー Thunder and lightning can be heard.
Yui
Either way, I guess I’ll have no other choice but to check it out for myself.
ー Yui knocks on the front door.
ー Yui knocks on the door again after no response was given.
Yui
No reply…Aahー What to do? There’s nobody home after all. The lights aren’t on either.
Yui
No surprise, really. This place is known amongst the neighborhood for being haunted.
Yui
A person related to the church living in a house where ghosts are rumored to appear…That must be some sort of mistake, right?
Yui
Eeeeh…!? You’ve been summoned at a church abroad? Tomorrow you’re already leaving…?
Father
Don’t raise your voice like that, Yui. Calm down.
Yui
Calm down, you say? Wouldn’t anyone be surprised if they were suddenly told such a thing…?
Yui
Besides, where are they transferring you to?
Father
Hm. About that, apparently they’ve decided on Eastern Europe.
Yui
E-Eastern Europe!? The East side of Europe? (2)
Father
Yes. When your father was young, I spent some time in that area.
Father
An urgent official request for transfer came from the church.
Yui
No way…Then what will happen to this church?
Father
They promised me to send a replacement right away. Do not worry about that matter.
Father
Besides, you are still here in Japan if something
Father
Yui…Listen closely. I’m thinking of going by myself.
Father
I can’t take you with me.
Yui
Don’t say that! You’re going alone…!? I want to go with you!
Father
I’m sorry. Living separate from you is rough on my part as well.
Father
However, trust me that this is definitely for your own sake. Please understand.
Yui
You’re leaving your only daughter behind in Japan and say it’s for…my own sake?
Yui
(Father’s making a pained expression. Still, why can’t I just go with him?)
Yui
Can’t you turn down the offer?
Father
I considered that many times. However, it’s a job that only I can do.
Yui
Something only you can do?
Father
E-Either way, I’ve already made proper arrangements to ensure that you won’t have any trouble living here on your own.
Father
I will leave tomorrow night. Until then, pack all your things and rely on the people living at this address.
Father
I’ve never mentioned them to you before because of some family conflicts, but it’s the house of some far relatives.
Father
They are related to the church as well and are aware of the circumstances. They won’t harm you in any way, so please think of them as my replacement and don’t hesitate to ask them for help.
Yui
(To think this place would turn out be the “haunted house”…)
Yui
Haa…I should have just begged father to take me with him no matter what.
Yui
(However, he looked so strict at that time, I have the feeling he didn’t want to take me with him no matter what I did or said.)
Yui
(I wonder why he seemed so reluctant…?)
Yui
(Besides, what’s a type of job only my father can do?)
Yui
(He is just a simple priest. As for his speciality…Perhaps gardening?)
Yui
Eh? Did the door just open by itself?
ー Yui knocks on the door again.
Yui
Excuse me! Is anyone home?
Yui
I’m Komori’s daughter! I believe you’ve already heard the story from my father. I’m coming in, okay?
Yui
(I went inside but just as I thought, it doesn’t seem like anyone is around.)
Yui
(However, the door opened earlier, which means someone must be around! There has to be!)
Yui
Haaー I guess I’ll let myself in.
Yui
Uu…That being said, I’m still a little scared. However, I can’t just keep on standing here either.
ー Yui moves to the living room.
Yui
(There really is nobody around. How strange…Then how did the door open earlier?)
Yui
There must be some sort of mistake on the memo father gave me.
Yui
(I don’t want to make him worry too much, but I’ll have no other choice but to contact him.)
Yui
(But like this we won’t get anywhere…Let’s see…Where did I put my cellphone? …Huh!?)
ー Lightning strikes again.
Yui
(I…I just saw the silhouette of a person in the light of the thunder!)
Yui
(Is he sleeping? But this person…)
Yui
Hello? Are you a resident of this place?
Yui
( …!? I touched his skin for just a second and…He feels so cold!)
Yui
Eh? He…He’s not breathing!? He’s dead!?
Yui
(What’s happening…! My chest suddenly hurts…!!)
Yui
(What’s wrong with me…!?)
???: 「ーー Where are you? Where? Where are you?」
Yui
(Someone’s voice is entering my head…)
Yui
Haa…Haa…Either way…I have to call an ambulance.
Yui
(I’m worried about my own condition as well, but first of all I have to do something about this person.)
ー Yui phones an ambulance
Yui
ーーH-Hello? I would like an ambulance. Uhm…There’s a dead person here.
Yui
Eh? The address? If I recall correctly…
Translation notes
(1) The word used in Japanese here is 適当 or ‘tekitō’ which can be translated as ‘random’ or ‘vague’. In this context, I ended up going with a less direct translation of ‘making something up’.
(2) This sentence ends up sounding really silly in English, but in Japanese Yui says the follow: 「東欧ってヨーロッパの東のこと?」In the first part of the sentence, the word ‘tōō’ is used, followed by the cluster ‘yōroppa no higashi’. As you can tell, while they convey the same meaning, both parts are pronounced differently which makes it sound less stupid and obvious compared to the English translation.
