They Are Getting Married (1)

When I returned to my place, Emilie almost finished her share of pasta. My unfinished share was still warm. I took out some ham from the bag left by D-George and handed a slice to Emilie. "Try it."

"I'm almost done." It was the first time in two days that Emilie spoke to me in a peaceful tone.

I smiled. "Have some more of the pasta. You won't put on any weight because of it."

Emilie ignored my suggestion and said, "Your father has left. You can move out."

I looked at the storm outside the window and brought it up to Emilie, "Not today. Can I stay for another night?"

"No," Emilie said firmly.

I slammed my fork on the table and said angrily, "What's wrong with you? Don't you know there is no free lunch in the world? Spit out the food in your mouth, and I will move out of here immediately."

Shocked by my sudden temper, Emilie looked at me with her beautiful eyes and was lost for words.

I softened my tone and said, "Look, it's been a long day for me. I'm worn out. Please let me stay here, okay?"

"Not gonna happen!"

"Let me stay here tonight, please?" I quickly said and vowed, "I promise to move when I get back from work tomorrow!"

Emilie finally compromised. "Bear that in mind."

"Of course. I'll move tomorrow!"

Emilie looked at me with dissatisfaction. She picked up the plate and walked towards the kitchen to get more pasta.

"I thought you were almost done."

Emilie glared at me and said, "I let you stay here for one more night. So I need to get the most benefit out of you."

I shook my head and sighed. "Don't blame me if you put on some weight!"

Although I was teasing, I sliced more ham and handed a few pieces to Emilie. She did not refuse. Then, we continued to have our meal in a strange vibe.

...

After dinner, I handed Emilie the 500 dollars left by D-George. "Keep the 500 dollars. I'll give you the rest after I get my salary next week."

"If you give it to me, will you have money for the rent? You can pay me later."

"You refused it for my sake. Remember this. Don't say that I didn't pay you back in the future," I said as I stuffed the money into my wallet.

"As long as you move away as soon as possible, nothing else matters," Emilie said as she stuffed more pasta into her mouth. It seemed that she liked it. Indeed, D-George made the best pasta, which could remind people of home.

"I am not a bad guy. You don't have to hate me so much!" I sighed.

"You're an indecent man. Why should I like you?"

I smiled and didn't reply. Perhaps I was indecent, or perhaps there were misunderstandings between us, but it didn't matter. It was even unnecessary for me to clarify or explain more. When I came back from work tomorrow, I would move out of here, and there would be no connection between us.

I finished my food and then stared at Emilie. She was wearing a white long-sleeved chiffon shirt and a pair of black and white pen-style casual pants. She had slightly curly long hair, which set off her temperament and made her look thin.

I took out the knitted sweater that D-George had left and gestured to Emilie. After a long while, I said, "It's getting cold. Don't you think this sweater suits you?"

Emilie frowned. "There's no free lunch."

"It suits you perfectly... If you're willing to continue renting this place to me, I don't mind giving it to you. My dad said that my mom made this sweater. It will keep you comfortable and warm in winter!"

"I don't deserve to have the sweater."

I smiled and handed the sweater to her. "I was just joking with you. Even if you don't want to rent the house to me, I'll give this sweater to you. I don't have any plans to have a girlfriend for the time being. It's a pity if I keep such a good sweater. Take it as my apology for my rudeness yesterday."

My expression was extremely sincere. Emilie hesitated for a moment and took the sweater I handed to her and said to me, "Alright, I accept your apology... By the way, treat your dad better. Don't lie to him anymore or make him worry."

"What does accepting my apology have to do treating my dad better?" I asked in surprise.

In response to my doubts, Emilie became angry, "You are really a scumbag!" After that, she stuffed the sweater into her handbag and pushed open the door to leave.

I was the only one left in the room. I was a little confused by Emilie's sudden anger. I sat and thought for a long time before I understood. Perhaps she accepted my apology for the time being and even made an exception for me to stay for another night out of sympathy for D-George. She was probably still very indifferent and bored of me. In her eyes, I made a woman pregnant, deceived my father, treated her rudely, and broke my promises. She must think of me as a scumbag.

Emilie did not stay here that night. Then she must have other places to live in this city, but why did she buy this place and live here?
